I really think the team blew it out of the park with that scene. You could FEEL the WoL was willing to die to take out the Endsinger. That a hint of doubt, that we *couldn't* win this fight, so we saved everyone else, and would hold her back so they could get away. And then Zenos breaks reality itself and is just fucking **Flabbergasted** that we're having any kind of trouble at all. "How could you be struggling with such an insignificant creature at this?! *You're My Best Friend.* It's utterly impossible that despair in any form could even phase you! Climb up here and let's sweep this dusty bitch away so we can have a REAL fight!" Just fucking perfection.

Damn. I remember a time where so many people disliked this guy for being the blandest antagonist in the game. Felt like I was the only person who actually liked this guy even a little until now
He has a simple goal he wants a good fight because he only lives in the moment he is the strongest anyone can be other than you he is your mirror and you his only "friend" someone he can bring his all against. Most people did not like him because they felt he was too simple.
I liked him because, at some points in the game, he really did always give you a good challenge, and of course, you back to him. He "IS" boring like that....but part of you can't help but respect a man with a simple goal. Not empire expansion, no resurrection of an old race, the preservation of life throughout the universe.....just give me a fight worthy of time immemorial. And we, as players, adventurers, heroes and champions....well it was really our goal too. Higher ILVL, better materia, one more stack of HQ food and a tincture potion, pushing ourselves to a limit to overcome a raid, an extreme boss, one more challenge foiled under your belt. I'd be lying to him if I didn't agree with my notion that I was, at heart, an adventurer, always going to the limit. And that's where his obsession with us meets equal ground, in a place devoid of anything else. Sometimes it's just about the thrill of the Challenge. From playing just a single character in any of the games (WHM only in FF1 anyone?), or "No Item/Materia/Sphere Grid/Whatever" runs, no death runs, speed runs.....as gamers, some of us delight in the thrill of making it through the impossible.
I liked Zenos *because* he was simple. So many antaganists are written to be complicated, having tragic motives, etc. And that's all well and good, we've gotten some good villains from it, but when EVERY villain is written like that, it gets more than a little old. Zenos though, he's simple. He just has a simple goal: to have a fight with you where you both can go all out. To feel the thrill of the fight. And honestly? I like that a lot
Sometimes we dont really need an overly complicated villain, sometimes we just want a villain that enjoys themselves by the despair and destruction they carry though their enjoyment.
I don't understand why people say this. It's not that he isn't depthful It's that he's void of any character. He is a pure shonen anime villian through and through. Incredibly cartoonish and having the motivation to be very best that ever was. Luke Allen-Gale is the only thing that saves this miserable character that was basically put on sidelines for EW so he could be a temporary mount.

its more complicated than that. Zenos is both right about that and wrong at the same time. We want to protect those close to us. but we started looking for adventure only, and still do enjoy a good fight.

@@Calder90 I believe so too, i mean he let us leave the first two major encounters where he whooped our ass, so i wouldn't be surprised, although there is no clear indication and i think the devs let this one to be interpreted as we wish. For me Zenos as a character was awesome, i didn't cried for any other characters but for Zenos, it was like a part of me broke, felt hollow afterwards.While Zenos was stirring trouble he was giving us a purpose in the story, to fix what he broke in his path, so yea, story wise he was a major role for me, granted not all issues started from him or bcs of him but still played a major role. Also i must admit Luke Allen Gale the voice actor did an awesome job, perfect voice and voice acting in my books.

My opinion of Endwalker Zenos: "I acknowledge that the real reason you frustrate me is because game recognizes game. *HOWEVER!* Due to a certain incident in Garlemald, you need to either *stay* dead this time, or come back and join the Scions in a probationary role under my personal supervision, preferably with 300% more chill."
To be fair, he used his artificial echo to soul hop like the ascians do to "survive" Ala Mhigo. There was no one around to soul hop into in the final duel. And even if he wasn't actually dead yet, (he was, but it's just a thought exercise) he would be trapped there at the literal edge of the universe. He can't turn back into Shinryu anymore. It was a one time deal from gorging on the Mother Crystal's remaining aether that allowed him to transform one more time.

It has only been a year....but i miss zenos...I dont know....as a villain I like emet in shadowbringers more but zenos? He feels more personal. He grew with us...he was a reflection of the player endlessly growing stronger for the sake of it like the warrior of light if he had noone like the scions around him. He feels...personal to me...which is why i miss him more.
I loved Zenos. He's a simple, complicated character. He can not help the simpleness. The man, while exceptional has lived a lack luster life. He never knew friendship or joy. How could he understand what he feels and apply it in an appropriate manner? "I have but one pleasure and it's all I have to give." (Paraphrased) Honestly he did the best he could with what he knew in how to express himself. Seeing him struggle in what should feel natural made me feel for him and appreciate his character. He wanted to share and express that one joy he has only ever known ... and that was the joy of beating the absolute *fuck* out of someone and getting obliterated just as hard in return. It's a sad existence and a bittersweet end.

I never aspired to be a hero and yet here I am."
Imagine him being like Vegeta and have him join us in the fight for evil, flying around all day, doin raids with him as a companion, us with our gift and him with his might :D , perfect duo lol

Such a great villain, with such a great ending and final battle. Throwing aside the dramatic disguises of empire and massive grandiose for just pure beating each other to to death, until their last breath is spent. Well, he did save our life, possibly twice, (more if you count all the times he could have killed us and didn't) and he did help us save the universe when we were in a bind, so I'd argue he wasn't a bad friend, terrible person, yes, but as friends go, he was there when needed.
Zenos sums up what any frenemy is. We fight against each other or with eachother it doesn't matter as long as we resonate. With each torment we strive to be better and make each other better. With the last resounding crash we'll die for eachother because the fight is beautiful and the only reason worth living. Even if right now I am completely dominated by my frenemy every time I will never stop fighting because I love it and this world is so tediously boring
what a villain that ending zeno finally gets his accept from the one he truly considered a friend thank you for all the battles zenos may you finally find your piece in death
At first Zenos didn't really do much for me as a character, but the more we delved into his character and motivations as the story goes on the more I came to appreciate what he brought to the table. I felt a sense of pity for him despite his actions, never able to truly appreciate life or the things in it other than that hunt for one proper, all encompassing battle. And when he called the WoL his only 'friend', even in his own deluded ideas of what that meant, it just hit me right in the feels. I couldn't truly hate the character after that.
Joy of life is different for any of us, for him it was fighting and whooping asses or getting destroyed, so once he found WoL he found a purpose or a meaning he finally found his *joy of life*, the spark that's blinding him, this spark is a double edged sword if u like as it is is fulfilling but also destructive. Sad tho, living life in the dark and finally finding something or someone that brings light after so many years...must have been painful, just my opinion. Zenos for me was part of me but also my opposite, after his death i am incomplete and hollow, partly bcs of the character itself but also bcs Luke's deliveries, that VA is amazing in my books as well, love that dude
The problem with Zenos in Stormblood is that his motives aren't relevant to the story. While we want to liberate people, he couldn't care less if they were liberated or not, so we're fighting someone with no stakes in the conflict. Zenos in Endwalker however is an answer to the question. He has a purpose. Even if it's a purpose that most people would not like or agree with, he has a goal in life. When everything around him seemed utterly pointless he discovered his bliss and chased it with his whole heart. So while the character didn't change, the conditions changed to make his motivations relevant to the theme of the story.
ngl i hated this guy from beginning to end but i can admit he was well written. hes meant to be despised and hes perfectly ok with it..hell he welcomes it himself because its just one more tick on the checkbox of reasons to fight him
The looks, the last outfit, the reaper job and the fact he saves the universe to free up your time so you can pay him attention all work towards making him a memorable character. The Endsinger just blows away all your friends and you're standing alone and he shows up like "Eh, you not done yet? What's taking so long?" And it's like dude, you are very much overestimating my abilities...gonna be another three expansions before I can solo this chick.
I think that Zenos and the Warrior of Light both know their purpose, their desire. To fight and kill for Zenos. For the WoL, its to fight, but in protection of the people they know, the people will know, and the people they will never meet. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure others have found their purpose. For some it just clicks, and other times, people search their entire lives what their purpose was. So I say to you, yes, you. Find your meaning, your purpose. The only way to do that is to try things outside your circle of knowledge.
Zenos didn't take joy in killing. All he wanted was a fight that challenged him. And the WoL was the only person that could provide that. It's because the WoL cares about protecting people that he cooked up this elaborate scheme to kill as many people as possible. Had we cared about something else he would have tried something else to get our attention.

I still did not come to like Zenos. I appreciate his character arc and who he was to our WOL, but to me he was a annoying obsessive psychopath. May be due partly that my WOL is female as I. I viewed his viewpoints disturbing. My WOL did not have time to entertain a bored prince. And although he came to better understand his emotions, it was like a little to late for me honestly. He only came to help then fight like always. I as a WOL was glad to be rid of him.

Well, he did save our life, possibly twice, (more if you count all the times he could have killed us and didn't) and he did help us save the universe when we were in a bind, so I'd argue he wasn't a bad friend, terrible person, yes, but as friends go, he was there when needed.

Zenos sums up what any frenemy is. We fight against each other or with eachother it doesn't matter as long as we resonate. With each torment we strive to be better and make each other better. With the last resounding crash we'll die for eachother because the fight is beautiful and the only reason worth living. Even if right now I am completely dominated by my frenemy every time I will never stop fighting because I love it and this world is so tediously boring

At first Zenos didn't really do much for me as a character, but the more we delved into his character and motivations as the story goes on the more I came to appreciate what he brought to the table. I felt a sense of pity for him despite his actions, never able to truly appreciate life or the things in it other than that hunt for one proper, all encompassing battle. And when he called the WoL his only 'friend', even in his own deluded ideas of what that meant, it just hit me right in the feels. I couldn't truly hate the character after that.
Joy of life is different for any of us, for him it was fighting and whooping asses or getting destroyed, so once he found WoL he found a purpose or a meaning he finally found his *joy of life*, the spark that's blinding him, this spark is a double edged sword if u like as it is is fulfilling but also destructive. Sad tho, living life in the dark and finally finding something or someone that brings light after so many years...must have been painful, just my opinion. Zenos for me was part of me but also my opposite, after his death i am incomplete and hollow, partly bcs of the character itself but also bcs Luke's deliveries, that VA is amazing in my books as well, love that dude
The problem with Zenos in Stormblood is that his motives aren't relevant to the story. While we want to liberate people, he couldn't care less if they were liberated or not, so we're fighting someone with no stakes in the conflict. Zenos in Endwalker however is an answer to the question. He has a purpose. Even if it's a purpose that most people would not like or agree with, he has a goal in life. When everything around him seemed utterly pointless he discovered his bliss and chased it with his whole heart. So while the character didn't change, the conditions changed to make his motivations relevant to the theme of the story.

Zenos is 90% voice
The looks, the last outfit, the reaper job and the fact he saves the universe to free up your time so you can pay him attention all work towards making him a memorable character. The Endsinger just blows away all your friends and you're standing alone and he shows up like "Eh, you not done yet? What's taking so long?" And it's like dude, you are very much overestimating my abilities...gonna be another three expansions before I can solo this chick.

Zenos the best frenemy since the Joker
I think that Zenos and the Warrior of Light both know their purpose, their desire. To fight and kill for Zenos. For the WoL, its to fight, but in protection of the people they know, the people will know, and the people they will never meet. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure others have found their purpose. For some it just clicks, and other times, people search their entire lives what their purpose was.
So I say to you, yes, you. Find your meaning, your purpose. The only way to do that is to try things outside your circle of knowledge.
Zenos didn't take joy in killing. All he wanted was a fight that challenged him. And the WoL was the only person that could provide that. It's because the WoL cares about protecting people that he cooked up this elaborate scheme to kill as many people as possible. Had we cared about something else he would have tried something else to get our attention.

@@MissKashiratherapy… we humans aren’t solid objects that you cannot shape.. we are dynamic.. fluid even.. this is a theme I all too often dislike in stories and IRL.. that people think one cannot change who and what he is.. and most of all the people who believe they cannot change.. it is a measurement of character.. of the strength of your will.. once you have been confronted with unsourmountable odds and go on anyway.. or had a event, like an accident or sickness, that changes your life forever.. you can understand..

I still did not come to like Zenos. I appreciate his character arc and who he was to our WOL, but to me he was a annoying obsessive psychopath. May be due partly that my WOL is female as I. I viewed his viewpoints disturbing. My WOL did not have time to entertain a bored prince. And although he came to better understand his emotions, it was like a little to late for me honestly. He only came to help then fight like always. I as a WOL was glad to be rid of him.
