Should clean up nicely and sell fast in the spring. I hate it when the mounting bolts snap off, I keep a bunch of sumps around for the same reason. I drilled one out a few weeks ago and put a bolt/nut through it because it was one of he easy ones to get to from the top but if I had two broken bolts that sump would’ve been changed out.

Thanks! Lately, my attempts to drill and tap new holes have resulted in broken drill bits. Maybe if I had a drill press it would go smoother. Anymore, I just swamp the sump. It sure is frustrating though! Luckily, the other engine came free with no issues. :)

It turned out to be one nice electric start mower

Yep. A little more fine tuning and it should be good to go!

ya, that's why after all that trouble, he ended up having to pull start it.

Many thanks for sharing a nice video.
You mentioned that your unit had a bent crankshaft. That sudden stop when you hit something is what destroyed your flywheel key along with bending the crankshaft. I an surprised that the unit started once the flywheel key was destroyed When that happens it throws the engine out of time and usually makes the pull start versions almost impossible to start..
As I listened to you try to crank it with the electric start and it was turning very slow. Either the starter was dragging i.e. needs rebuilt or replaced, or your battery needs replacement It could be just a bad battery or there could be issues with the charging system.
When you had the sump apart I noticed you had two different types of camshaft drive gears, one was cast iron/metal old style and the other newer one was plastic ones which in my opinion are JUNK. The plastic gears are notorious for breaking off teeth. Not sure if you could swap them but it is something to keep in the back of your mind in case you have any issues in the future. Might want to save those gears, both the crankshaft and the camshaft cast iron/metal gears.
Just some things I have come across over the years that may???? be of some help.

Thank you for the input! The bent crankshaft was the result of the previous owner. I'm surprised it ran as well, without yanking the rope out of my hand. I often see the flywheel key sheered as well, when the shaft is bent. I never checked this one as it seemed to run very well, other than burning oil. It was a surprise to me!
On the gear, I agree, I've seen the plastic ones break before. What I've seen is the keyway in the gear strip out, then the gear moves freely on the crankshaft. As I rewatched the video, I THINK both may have been metal. Fingers crossed.
And regarding the starter, yes I agree it sounds slow. I suspect it's the battery. I bought a new one, but have not yet charged it... and I've been using it on another mower (not filmed). So it was probably low on charge. :)

can you put an AC powered electric starter on it, like snowblower engines have?

I suspect so, but I have never done so. I wonder if another garage mechanic has tried this on TH-cam!

@@mowpower5551 Briggs used to put them on small riding mower engines in the 1960s and they worked GREAT. not sure why they stopped doing that.

Mow Power what do you think about battery operate Ego mowers

    • @mowpower5551
      @mowpower5551  2 ปีที่แล้ว

To be honest, I know nothing at all about the battery mowers. I'm fairly confident that they won't last as long as a gasoline powered mower that is properly maintained. Batteries only last so long before they don't hold a charge anymore. Other than this, I'm not much help here!

Mow power I agree that won’t last long as the gasoline power does
