    I have worked at a large hospital that had a lot of automation (Roche, Cellavision, etc.), but we still spent a lot of time doing manual work. There was a lot of training and answering phone calls too. Especially in blood bank, hematology, and micro. Chemistry was mostly automated but you basically had to be glued to the computer to validate results. Even if it is fully automated there will be a need, and considering the lack of workers it will not make a difference in job availability.

      Thank you for sharing. The biggest cone for me not going to lab science was that it 1000% will be automated, but no, people say it is not true, they know what they are saying 🤣

      Thank you for sharing this information with us! Are you still working in the hospital that you were talking about in this message?

      It's not true. It cannot be 100% automated in our lifetime.

    If not fully automated then filled with people who are not certified.

      I agree, especially if positions cannot be filled

    As a student im learning that we can correct a machine’s cbc count because it’ll count nRbc as wbc and we r needed to manually diff between the two

    • @RosaPerez
      @RosaPerez  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you can correct it. We do not count them for out wbc count and continue on with the keyboard on Sunquest until it beeps and will not let us count anymore. We then write down the counts on paper which is reviewed by someone else.

    Yes, the other day in my lab, the technologist had to go with my department to find out if both samples received have the same name for a patient, bc he received two urine samples but the results looks like two different people so the lab have to collect the patient again but the machine did not read this weird results it just give the results and that it

      Medical errors can still happen with automation as well. That is why with your example it shows that humans are still needed to get the job done. Thank you for sharing Betsi!

    Do you fear for the future of MLS? A lot of seasoned professionals say it is a dying field NOT because of lack of demand, but instead not being able to hire enough competent people therefore having the close down facilities. Just recently there has been news of states like TN and GA deregulating the MLS field, meaning formal certification and what not is no longer required (those politicians are idiots.) The intent for this is to get more working bodies into the lab, but the major con to this is obviously UNQUALIFIED people who don't really know what they are doing. From my understanding it takes more than pushing a button to be in this field. Thank God I don't live in those crappy states.

      That is a really good question. I see that trend...and I see it in nursing too. What I really think is that your higher level person will oversee the lab. Basically well be forced into management positions...overseeing those people.

    I mean I guess but with automation when it works it's fantastic when it breaks down omg watch out lol. It can't be because there is so much quality control and quality assurance. Heck when they get a new lot of QC it can still drift. The chem lead tech at my place has to consult with other lead techs in the area to see if there is a drift. Then they have to adjust.

    • @RosaPerez
      @RosaPerez  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree with you. Automation has made things so much easier. When it works it is great but when it doesn't it makes work stressful and more challenging. Humans are creatures of habit. Correct, new QC can still be out of reference range. Consultation with coworkers still does occur.
