    You sir are a lifesaver! Was prepping for Hurricane Ian yesterday, tried to fire up my generator to test it out, and wore my hands bloody pulling the starter cord 100 or so times. I found your video in a TH-cam search, and despite my nervousness about dismounting and disassembling a carburetor, cleaned it all out and now it’s purring like a kitten! Still hoping I won’t need it, but THANK YOU!!! I at least have some peace of mind, God bless!

      @@norwoodsatv ~ Hello! No problems with the idle that I noticed. However, I didn't end up using it for the storm, we maintained power. I will go back and check it more continuously; after doing this fix, I only ran it for maybe 2-10 minutes stints and it sounded great. Each time, I turned off the fuel supply switch to let the carb run out of fuel.

    Very nice job. I very much dislike those Nikki carburetors. I think there is a replacement for them but I can't think of the name at the moment. I rebuilt two of them this week alone. I am in the country so lots of people have generators here. I recently fixed one like the one you just did, and it was only water in the gas because the guy leaves it outside all the time. I tell people to always drain the carb by shutting off the gas but it usually goes in and out of their heads. Also I recommend non-ethenol gas but again it usually doesn't happen. Thanks for the video.

      Yeah Taryl of taryl fixes all who works on small engines does not like the Nikki either,
      says Walbro is a better carb.. When I fix a gen 4 a customer, it is just about always cuz
      they left gas in the carb. I tell'em just once. "U want this to run when ya need it? make
      sure there's no gas in the carb when ur done with it". Sometimes it will sit for over a year,
      then when I do get her running, she won't put out as she lost all her residual magnetic
      field and charge a small junk to get it back for them. They buy a Genset to avoid some
      inconvenience but have absolutely NO idea about proper maintenance, Then hiss and
      groan it was not a good generator, Oh when will they ever learn?

    Great vid. I like using Brake clean and compressed air to clean the carbs after letting them soak for 20-30 min in a tub of gas. This model is a great candidate for an inline fuel filter after that fuel cut off valve. 3-4 inches of fuel line after that fuel cut off valve and then install an inline fuel filter. That will save alot of carb issues from debris. I agree 100% always turn off that fuel and run that carb dry.

    Having a generator is family specific I believe. Some families have very little frozen or refrigerator foods so not a lot to worry about. Also if a household does not loose power very often it may not be necessary. However, if you live in an area that loosed power because of storms or other problems I would certainly consider one. Also some folks need portable power so that is another consideration. Just have to start them periodically and store them properly. Great fix for sure. Nice sounding generator now. Thanks for sharing.

    I think people should have generators. Especially with the climate changes we've experienced and what happened in Texas this past winter it would be a good decision. It was clear electrical grids may not always be reliable so having some way for power when the main power goes out isn't a bad idea. Its more so a life or death situation as well. You don't want to die of heat exhaustion in the summer if power goes out and you sure don't want to freeze to death in the winter either. Its a good life saving type investment IMO.

    Hi! Great video!
    A couple of years ago I bought a BS power generator that has been running great until last week. It ran for 3 hours and then stopped and Doesn’t want to start up.
    I put fresh fuel, I cleaned the carburetor jets (everything was really clean and brand new), I also tried spraying some gasoline through the carburetor and also with a a quick start spray without luck. The spark plug is making a nice and strong spark arc, the oil level is fine as well as the sensor. I checked all the cables and everything seems fine. I just don’t know what else to do! If there is spark (and a strong one) and there is fuel inside, why isn’t it starting?
    Oh and when I pull, there seems to be good compression...
    Any ideas? Thanks!

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually if I have spark and fuel and compression, I look for a timing issue or even a spark plug. Even if we test for spark outside of then engine we can't be certain what it looks like inside. I would also consider replacing the spark plug as they are inexpensive.

    We live(d) out in the sticks and it was a common thing for the power to go out but with all the zillionaire goffers moving in the power company hates to hear them squeal about no power and having to use their LP Gas jobs so get the power back on pretty quick. I have an old 5K Coleman with a 10 horse Briggs IC flathead and a 2.5K Onan 4-pole, 1800 r.p.m. and plenty of gas and ready for about anything. Usually I run the 5K for 220 for the well pump and the 2.5 for coolers and such. I also added a 'T' fitting so I can drain the tank thoroughly and not leave any gas to go stale and run the carb dry as well. Added electric start because of the vacuum fuel pump and it's a bear to pull enough to get the carb full. Also a 110 battery maintainer to charge the battery back when the genset is running because it has no way to add a charging system to the engine. I just plug the maintainer back into the genset. Gensets are nice but you have to pull maintenance on them or they'll die just like everything else. Blessings

      sure, have you considered replacing the carb? Also have you checked for spark and done a compression test?

    • @sdelfino5
      @sdelfino5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The carburetor looked brand new when I opened it up. The pull cord offers plenty of resistance if that alone means there’s good compression. How do I check for spark?

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      remove spark plug, reconnect the wire to it, and then make the plug have contact with the metal of the engine. Then pull on the rope and looks for spark at the plug.

      That Patrick, is a VERY BIG 'IF' I've seen it many times, big-ass hurricane, people running
      out to Lowes or Home depot, they have half or no idea what power range they are looking
      for. some who have NEVER ever done a lick of wiring want to make a suicide cord to feed
      the house thru the dryer, a cord fitted with male ends even. after the hurricane passes and they managed to live thru it without juicing themself to death, they shut it off an either put
      it in the corner o the garage or leave outside with a flimzy tarp. gas still in the carb. next
      time they need it, no start. . . then they start pissing an moaning how they spent a good
      chunk of change only to use it once. . .

    Thanks for doing a great job on this very helpful video. It is understandable, concise and well edited (Big Hint to All Other TH-camrs...EDIT YOUR VIDEOS! We don't want to wait for you to find your wrench or realize your battery is dead in your drill.).
    Living in Central Ohio; we have ice storms and heavy snow in the winter, and thunderstorms with tornadoes in the spring and summer. Generators are a must here. It can take days for power to be restored, and homeowner's insurance won't cover rotten food.
    Back to the video. You were able to re-use your gaskets. Should they always be replaced when removing a carburetor, or only if they come off during removal? And lastly, is WD-40 a good alternative for cleaning around rubber seals instead of gasoline?

    When I reinstalled the carburetor fuel would gush out of the choke. Took it apart twice and put it back, same results.

      @@HomeGaragechannel Btw HG some BriggsStratton gens are licenced with TroyBilt.
      I have one of their gens pretty good 5500 watts running 8550 or something
      like that peak starting. Aas U may know some gens use an AVR (auto voltage
      regulator and that also rectifies a.c. to d.c. to go to the brushes. on the Gen I
      have, no avr. It does have two wires from stator to a small circuit board on the
      back of the brushes assembly. this turns a.c. to d.c. to feed the brushes. I chkt
      it, 7.5 volts a.c.so if you see or get one of these. It may help to know what the
      rotor is getting. On Brushless types, the rotor has 2 separate coils connected
      together by diodes. Rotor still has residual field and that gets stronger. a.c. is
      induced in 1 coil on rotor an changed to d.c. to go to the other coil, making rotor
      a strong electro-magnet.

      @@HomeGaragechannel You are very welcome. This may help at times. I am told if u have
      a gen say good for 5KW u want to hook to ur house after a sparky made the wiring legal for it, that the gen should have a floating neutral as neutral and ground can
      only meet just once. having a bonded neutral gen with a house hook-up can keep on
      tripping gfi's and maybe mess up furnaces.
