Director of Chernobyl chose to not use russian accent because actors will try to act the accent and could loose the attention to portraying the characters. That's why they have british accents.

Chernobyl is a great show. And the scenes with the technicians inside the power plant leading up to the explosion remind me of how we have so many people in this country now who demand we believe(or act is if we believe) blatant lies. It won't end well.

Guys let's make this comment a thread of good Russian movies, TV shows, books, and music recommendation (or about Russia like HBO's' Chernobyl). For me, Russian literature is just out of this world, I really want to read more of it. Additionally, I am fascinated by the chess culture in the country and how much of an influence it is to the international sport.
Edit: Also the comedy film 'Death of Stalin' which is banned/not licensed in Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan is worth a watch.

Anything to do with the bolshoi is fascinating to me because I used to dance. But more so, the pride and how the culture permiates every facet of life in Russia. It's quite beautiful. Strong people with bold spirits out of necessity and yet the grace to perfect something like ballet. I respect the dedication to country but also feel bad for those who worship any leader or title.

What we need is a movie about the performance of Shostas 7th in Leningrad during the siege! Its such an insane story and perfect for a movie. This orchestra playing one of the longest, most demanding orchestral pieces, unable to go through it without anyone passing out before the life performance. They blasted the shit so loud on all speakers, the Germans could hear it in their positions. One day a violinist came late to rehearsal because he buried his wife after serving at the front that day. Conductor was like: „I dont give a fuck. Show up on time.“
Its the most Russian thing ever and full of gems of insanity and awesomeness. Give me my movie already!

It'd be nice indeed to watch a movie from the West about the Leningrad siege. Those were truly tragic 900 days which definitely deserve a great film. The documentary shots from that time gives you very unpleasent feeling.

There is a very interesting article I read a while ago: ‘How HBO’s “Chernobyl” Ignores the Nuances of Soviet Language’ by Victor Martinovich (look it up, it’s really interesting). Nothing to do with using English in the series but the actual way people would interact with each other in the “real” Soviet Union, not the one a westerner who wrote the script would imagine it.

Critics tend to forget that HBO Chernobyl is a feature film, not a documentary. When one is shooting a feature film it's normal to think about its form and pacing otherwise it would be overloaded with detailes which make narrative raggy and uneffective.

What I find the most inaccurate in the "Chernobyl" series is the way the characters handle conversation. For example, the dialogue between the firefighter's wife and her neighbor in the yard on the night of the explosion. I just can't imagine that people would have this polished, well-mannered, graceful British-style small talks in Russia or in Ukraine, especially in a small town like Pripyat. It seems so out-of-tune to anyone who has been living long enough in the ussr / post-ussr culture.

What came to my mind first was "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears". I do not like the movie itself but it shows the manner people were communicating with each other. I hope it helps a littlle bit.

One year ago in England or in Hollywood, they were going to make a movei about Henry VIII of England and his second wife Anne Boleyn and the chosen actres was black. Now tell me how accurate this movei Will be. Young people that are not that good in history or are from another country, lets say from America will think that really the queen of England in 1533 was black and Henry VIII beheaded her because he was a racist.

The science and narrative are not accurate, this is a dramatisation. Sure the scenery, props, characteristics of Russia and its people/ society and other artistic and cultural aspects may well be, I defer to those who lived there for that appraisal of course. However, this TV DRAMA is not accurate in how it portrays the science of the accident and the outcomes. It gives a grossly false impression of the dangers of nuclear power production and should therefore in no way be looked at as a documentary.
I enjoyed the series a lot, but I fear others will be misled by the fact it looks so authentic. Due to this, I wish it hadn't been so popular, as the PR of nuclear energy needs massive improvement if you care at all about the environment.
