We called it a bucksaw not a bow saw. When I was young in the early 1970's, back in Atlantic NL Canada, we always used a large bucksaw to cut firewood. Wood was our only form of heat at the time. In later years, to my delight, my dad bought a chainsaw. Love your videos Dave.
I have a couple of bow saws that I inherited from my dad they have have to be over 50 years old and still work great. I bought a box of hunting stuff at an auction and there was a fold down bow saw with two blades (meat and wood) that came in a great leather case. It has become my go to saw when I am beating the bush because of the pack down size and how well it works. I still have the original saws kicking around in my truck at all times and use them when I am close to the truck but I have to say this fold down saw has been a very pleasant surprise (and it was cheap). It is a wyoming saw. I always chuckle when I watch your videos because I would bet that you and I have a lot of the same junk in our shops, found the same way, yard sales, auctions and flea markets. I am too cheap to do it any other way, and the best stuff seems to be old stuff.
I totally agree. There is nothing better that a great score at a yardsale! When I go to a sale the first thing I look for is stuff in the corners of the garage....piles of wooden handles, etc. Thats what I hate the most about winter...no junk sales LOL. I would love to sit around with you and swap gear stories.....in the meantime I'm gonna look for a Wyoming saw. Cheers!

Agreed... those are some of the best camp saws. If I have conveyance or if I’m just beating around my own property that’s my hand saw pick. If I’m backpacking or hiking in a few miles I’ll pack my silky professional folding saw. Great channel brother!!
It didn’t take me to long to get use to it, it is slower than a 24” bow saw. The first few times I used One I could tell It would be easy to bow the blade. It’s one of those things where it’s easy to learn how to use one correctly but the more you use it the better you will get at it.
Those 24 in saws are definitly not to be under estimated, i cut a log probably 15in in diameter, i cut down until the frame touched the top of the log, then came at it from both side, and snapped it off at the bottom.
I have the same saw. Made by Bacho, Sweden. It was hanging on the wall in the shed, when we moved in. Changed the blade - works. But I do have a really nice Felco folding saw. Very handy and for smaller stuff, it is great!
When I bought this one it had a Bacho blade and the new blade I put on it is a Bacho.....I think the older blade had a better set to the teeth than the new. I don't think we have Felco here in the states.
Hey JB! There are folks who love the high end folding saws like Silky...I don't have any experience with them to share though.... The folders I've used, never did it for me.
I added a pocket to my backpack frame for a bow saw, my packing problem solved :) My old bow saw lives in that pocket to the point that I now consider it as part of the frame weight lol
Excellent video! I liked the beginning haha. I'm a fan of folding saws for 1 reason (like you mentioned), their packability. After that, a bow saw is the best! Simplicity is key. :)
I have used the cardboard sheath method also. I’ve used cardboard to cover all sort of sharp tools. Especially when transporting said tools. It works and that’s what counts.
I had to watch the video once more, I see we both have chosen the same type and size of saw for our backcountry wood cutting needs, When I pack mine I remove the blade and place it inside a 1 1/4 inch PVC tube with end caps it protect my pack gear from those sharp teeth.
I have a bow saw just that style and size, but mine’s orange. It’s 30 years old and is a beast. I couldn’t disagree with you here. Little big but will never fail and very light weight.
Bow saw, swede saw they are great for camping. Bought my first one in Fairbanks many moons ago. Have always had at least one at the cabins I have lived in, in Alaska. Still have one at my cabin outside of Seward. Its heavy duty with a wing nut to tighten the blade. I use a split piece of garden hose for protection from the blade. Lesson learned the hard way.
I agree on the size and type. My bow saw is a 30" with a 12" deep throat. Good around the home site but too big for packing, almost bigger than needed around home :-)... I like that 24"er
I tend to like a bit longer saw just because of how it clears the sawdust. The one you like looks about right. My nephew and I saw the issue with the more triangle shaped saw yesterday felling a tree.

Good question. All last summer I carried a Condor Bushlore all day everyday. If you watch my log cabin building videos you'll see it. In the winter time I don't do a lot of traveling or building so I generally don't have a belt knife on me. I might have a pocket knife but if I did it would be an old one as thats all I have. In fact, almost all my gear is old stuff. I get most everything I use form flee markets and Yard sales, and I love antique tools and knives. Pretty much all my fixed blade knives are new, but my pocket knives are all antiques.
I'll admit that the saw i carry depends on what i plan on doing. i do keep a small folding saw in my craft kit. its very good for what i use it for. making small, precise, relief cuts and trimming while wood carving. but i keep a 24" bowsaw as my workhorse. its great for getting lots of work done, but i'd never use it for spoon carving. a lot of people these days want a 'one too' option. they dont understand that there are different tools for different jobs.
Remember..if the blade is old and rusty and doesn't cut well, don't be afraid o touch it up with a file and then set the teeth a little.....It will get better. Ive re-done old blades that looked like garbage and they ended up cutting great. A good bow saw will perform well so don't settle for less that an easy cutting saw.
The best part of the whole thing is I got the saw and a couple of other things out of the box and then sold the rest for 40 dollars more than I paid for it.
i´m a sucker for saws and axes too :D and Your right i guess i like the both bow saws frommy grandpa´s the most maby its just the memory of cutting the christmas tree with them :)
I remember cutting a Christmas tree with my dad when I was kid. We used a curved pruning saw with a brown plastic handle.....I alway liked that saw....it made me think of a sword.
Good video Dave. I like your comment about the 24" saw being optimal stroke length. I also have an old 42" monster saw left to me my a good buddy who passed away. Pull saws can be totally awesome providing you get the correct length and teeth per inch for the wood you expect to cut, same applies to Bow Saws, seasoned or green hardwood or greenwood. With the pull saws it is advisable to learn the correct sawing method, many people still try to push as well as pull and complain when the blade bends. Of course it is still possible to re-sharpen a Bow Saw Blade, but not a pull/ folding saw. The more expensive pull saws have an a;loy or steel frame which is superior to plastics and they have a tooth and blade geometry that is superior to prevent binding. Hey WS. I saw in a video a while back some folks in Japan sharpening those big silky folding saws, so evidently they can be sharpened. Not sure about other folding saws. A lot of "tool box" type saws have super hard teeth and can't be sharpened. Thats why I love the old saws...the steel is the same all through the blade and you can sharpen them until you run out of steel....thats why its not hard to find a 100+ year old disston that just needs a touch up and a set and its ready to go.
Thanks for the update, I brought to Canada my dad's carpentry tools, they are stamped with his name, grandpa's name, great grandpa's name and one with great great grandpa's name. Interesting to note Disston was also a popular saw amongst these. One thing for sure, my eyesight would not allow me to sharpen a Silky saw...LOL!! I imagine that special tools would be needed for this task. The best wood chisels according to dad and grandpa were Ward and Payne and Robert Sorby (Sheffield England). Dad's axe is with me, it is a Gilpin 4lb Kent Pattern Axe. I recently discovered a 'Etna' crosscut hand saw, this still cuts great and I got it for $7 CDN.
Wow you have some old stuff! Thats awesome. I'm not surprised you have Dissyons in the mix..they were probably the biggest saw company ever in the USA. And When Henry Disston owned the company and his sons..he had every intention of making the greatest product money could buy. Anything in a "kent" pattern must be an OLD axe!!! Its super , super cool to have tools that have been passed down through so many members of the same family. It makes me want to go stay my tools and give a few to my son. You truly have a unique situation.
Interesting. Why do you bring a folding saw for other people. It would seem that its harder to learn to use a pull saw.?....though I don't know that for sure. Whats you experience.
Never had a folding saw that didn't bind when the sap got it sticky... and then ~~~~~ a bent blade is no fun! I'm like you, 24" bow saw is #1 choice. BTW an old belt makes a good cover for the blades. :)
@@Bushradical I did get me a new bow Saw yesterday for 7 bucks. I was surprised that it was so cheap 😂. But after using it. I learned that it cuts to the right 😂. But I was cutting a 8 inch log. For the price I didn't go wrong. I don't normally cut logs that big with a bow Saw. But the tree said take me take me. Lol 😂 oh it did me good to get out. I really got some beautiful wood. OH it's good therpy to get out. And enjoy the outdoors 😊
Snowing like crazy here in Southern New England 👍👍about time . Check out arborist saws , I like to carry my old school Fanno limbing saw from back when I was climbing .I can slide it into the side of my pack , yeah , weighs a bit more ( maybe 16 oz + ) but cuts like nobodies business . A very aggressive blade with a slight curve to the blade. Great around the yard too, add a couple to your collection . 🌲
I'm sure I've watched this video before, but surprisingly haven't left a comment yet. In your experience, are the folding saws (like the one Brooke uses) stable during use, or wobbly? I'm leaning towards a collapsible, but would definitely prefer whichever is sturdiest when actually cutting wood. Thanks for the video, sir! God Bless
Hey Dave, Ive only tried the Agua Canyon saw a coupe times but it felt very solid, and it was a great design.....I don't know thats its any "more" stable than a standard bowsaw.....but that model is a good one for sure.
I may even "incorporate" a spot on my pack frame for an Army surplus saw I found recently online. It has a "two handed" design with a grip/handle that drops down on one side. Thanks for the help!
Nothin beats a tool that is designed for the job at hand. Folding saws are for “just in case” bow saws are for when you KNOW you are gonna cut something. I just don’t get how the cool folders are that much easier to pack. You will burn more energy using them than you ever will packing a real one
Good point. There are a lot that swear by the silky stuff but I just don't have the experience to comment on them. But the old bow saw is a no-brainer. Its tough, it works, its light.
Not true...there are big folding saws that are more efficient than your average bow saw. Like the silky saws. Worth mentioning are also pocket chainsaws.
Good points David...i do carry a Bacho folder in my buttpack, i have for a number of years now...i cannot remember the last time i used the thing. Lately ive been using a Bucksaw with a 24" Bacho blade...works real well but a bit top heavy, if you know what i mean. Many years ago i owned a Bow Saw. not sure what ever happened to it...maybe i'll drop into a pawn shop in town and see if i can dig one up. Interesting that there has been a lot of talk on the youtube about saws lately...mostly concerning Silky saws...some folks claim they are superior to anything out there...never used one so i could not say yay or nay...Whew! that was long winded!...atb...woods
Hey Woods. I heard lot about Silky saws too. They seem to be very popular with a lot of folks especially the new school of bushcraft. I guess they are a great saw but Ive never tried one. I'm hopelessly "old school" when it comes to gear. From what Ive seen of your videos so are you. I ma pick up one of those saw just to try it out but if I don't like it I would have to keep it to myself lol......or it would be another "Gransfers Bruks" situation where people are so passionate about the tool that it ends up being a hornets nest. lol

I found a I think a 16in? Bow saw in the woods few years ago while hiking on a snowmobile trail in the summer. Awesome little saw. Got a 2 pk of new blades for like $6 bucks. I carry it in the hack of my truck. Has come in handy many times. I carry a saw with me almost all the time, in my pocket. It's the saw on my Victronox Huntsman SAK. It more or less saved my life. It will be 5 years in May. I was walking with my dogs in the back forty of our family farm. I slipped and fell. I had completely tore my patella tendon. You can't walk with out one. The only thing I had was my SAK. I was able to crawl over and cut down a small sapling. I used it as a staff to get myself off the ground and used it as a crutch to walk the 1.5 miles back home. It's been an ordeal. I won't go into the woods with out a knife with a saw blade. I also carry a Leatherman Wave that has a saw blade also.
Thanks Dave. I'm still healing, but that's a whole other story. I started to carry a SAK w/ saw about 25 or so years ago after I saw my uncle used his to saw the pelvic bone of a deer. The SAK saws are double toothed. They are pretty amazing little cutters. The saws on the bigger lockblade SAKs, such as the Champ and Out rider are bigger. But the saw on the Rangerwood 55 is a beast. If you haven't heard of them, look them up. Made with wood scales and also has a locking main blade but has the biggest saw. Makes for a very nice multi tool. I hope to pick one up one of these days.

Just found your channel, Dave, and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve used a very similar saw around my property for many years, and it cuts like crazy and has lasted decades thus far. I’m new to Bushcraft, and in fact took my first pack hike yesterday, and I’m curious as to how exactly you pack this saw. I did just buy a folding saw that packs well, but all the while I was using it yesterday, I was wishing I could have had my trusty bow saw with me. Do you tie it to the outside of your pack?

I have a good bow saw like that. I use it at home. I'm leaning still toward getting a more packable saw though, and specifically at the Agawa Canyon Boreal 21. I've seen many reviews on it, and have seen others using it over and over again on extended trips. If any of you own a Boreal 21, please reply and let me know how you like it. Thanks.
No experience with one Alan....but the Agawa Bay, Agawa Canyon area of Ontario is beautiful country. I just checked out their website and it seems to be the only product they sell other than blades. I think these guys are probably pretty passionate about making a good product as its their sole product. If you get one let me know what you think.
That saw gets great reviews on Amazon. Dave do you have any experience with a Silky? I am also a bow saw guy but I hear a lot of good things about the Silky line of pull saws.
Alan Williams I own that saw! I have had it for about 2 years and love it. When you buy it you have a choice of 3 saw blades (all purpose, aggressive and dry wood) I went with the all purpose blade and haven't changed it yet. The build quality is great, it's lightweight, very easy to set up (5 seconds) and it cuts like a boss. It is a little pricy but its a good buy.
I've used an agawa for 2 years . Got it at the Outdoor Adventure show . in Toronto Ontario in 2016. Really like its performance. They are made in the town of Uxbridge north-east of Toronto Brian 77
The problem I’ve found with bow saws is that if you want a square cut for something like a chopping block, bow saws tend to wander and not give you a square cut. I switched to a Silky saw because of that and haven’t had any problems. Maybe my bow saw technique is bad? Bow saws are perfect for firewood though and I have several.
Hehe I saw you made another video. LOL Ever tried those "ring saws" the cheap ones with two rings and what appears to be some kind of cable, either the ones I tried were just cheap junk or they are probably the worst "survival" saw made. For a long time I just carried a 24" Sandvik pruning saw, now I just use a folding saw that fits in my pants pockets.
Yeah Ive tried those! They came in the plastic handled "Rambo " knives in the 80's......they would break in a minute! I don't know if there is a "good" one of those. But, if there is, I've never seen it.
Pocket cable saws are horrible, every one I've ever used broke very quickly. Pocket chain saws though can be very good. Similar idea but vastly different results.
If youre using a tent and you picked up firewood at the local gas station then a small folding saw will be plenty. If youre building a shelter, cutting firewood, and building a bridge to get to the camp site then the full size bow saw is a minimum.
Sure. I use a triangle file. Its probably best to remove the blade and then clamp tin a vise....you don't need to but it would work better. Just touch up the teeth and if the saw still cuts poor....then re-set them. There are good videos out there about setting saw teeth. Also...we're talking about a $5 tool here....just go for it and learn by doing. I'm sure you could use about any file...but a triangle gets down to the bottom of the gullet.
That is like the 10$ you use to get from harbor freight back in the mid 90, or that is how much I paid for one. Now I have a Macho 30 or 36 bow saw I paid 3$ for at a second hand store. I agree the bow saw is the best.what do you think of the saw cross cut saw, i.e. logging type saw blade?
Try pocket chainsaws They are by far the lightest solution, very small, very cheap, work on big logs and are quite fast. With a rope attacked you can even cut braches from far away Even the good ones are quite cheap but when you buy one then: - better longer than shorter (90 cm is a minimum) - get one with enough theet
I'm wondering if you've ever used some of the non-folding saws like the Silky Zubat. I just watched a video that promised to: "Put to bed the debate about which saw is better, a Silky saw or a bow saw." However, then the video cut to: "Sponsored by Silky Saws, the sharpest, fastest, and most capable saws. Go check them out on my online store." I'm sorry, but that's just a BAD look. I've always used a bow saw, growing up I used dad's on the wall of the garage. I was just wondering if you've tried them, and what you think. The Zubat doesn't close, so no weak spot.
What’s your views on teeth per inch? What’s ideal etc? This is something that interests me as I’ve not needed to used saws a whole lot but I’m changing my views on it.
They make blades for green wood and blades for dry hardwood...If you are pruning trees go for the green, if you are camping and are going to be cutting firewood, then go for the dry hardwood blade.
Now, THAT'S a hat! I was going to ask about the different types of bowsaw blades and where to get the best ones, but since you've only had two blades on that saw, you may not have very strong opinions on that.
Good question. Bahco makes the best blades IMO. Both the blades on this saw have been dry wood blades. You can also get green wood blades that have both teeth and rakers. The dry wood blade has only triangle shaped teeth. If you plan to cut fire wood ( dry wood) get the dry wood blade .....I really don't see where the green wood blade would shine because when do you purposely want to cut green wood? if you were pruning fruit trees I would still use the dry blade because its a easier blade to "start" a cut with IMO. If ou had green rounds you were cutting up to split and season ...then maybe a green wood blade would be better............but a Chainsaw might be better yet ;)

Good question. I think Bahco makes the best blade. They are made in Sweden if I remember right. You may have to order one off eBay, but it might last you forever......I just re sharpen mine when they need it. Also, I have used a couple cheap blades that didn't have much "set" to the teeth, so the saw always wanted to "bind" I would get the best blade you can get your hands onto. Even the best bow saw blade you can get is still probably less than $10 and it will serve you well.
I'm assuming you've heard of Silky Saws but I'll pile on. My Gomboy cuts noticeably faster and smoother than my hardware store pruning saw like the one you showed. If you ever get the urge to try something new... get a Silky they really are great.
Brooke bought me one years ago. It was super cool, and made by a local guy. I never used it though.....I guess it wasn't for me. My impression at the time was that it had too many parts and I just didn't want to mess with it. It might have been awesome but having "parts" turned me off to it.
I just bought a jig saw.. does that count. Lol. Kidding. That’s for another project to cut in cat doors for the cats. I like those bow saws. I do have a Sven saw, but I hate that wing nut that you use to put it together. What if you lose the wing nut? I guess I’m getting bias like you. I can’t blame you.

Preach my brother! I use a foldable bow saw. The agawa canyon boreal 21. It is a great saw..A 21" bow saw can slip down the back of many packs and a cover for the blade can be made with a squished pvc pipe. Great video. Bow saws 4 life lol

Agreed... those are some of the best camp saws. If I have conveyance or if I’m just beating around my own property that’s my hand saw pick. If I’m backpacking or hiking in a few miles I’ll pack my silky professional folding saw.

It didn’t take me to long to get use to it, it is slower than a 24” bow saw. The first few times I used One I could tell It would be easy to bow the blade. It’s one of those things where it’s easy to learn how to use one correctly but the more you use it the better you will get at it.

The big boy might be a better comparison to a bow saw than my gomboy 270. I’d definitely like to see that comparison!

Those 24 in saws are definitly not to be under estimated, i cut a log probably 15in in diameter, i cut down until the frame touched the top of the log, then came at it from both side, and snapped it off at the bottom.
I have the same saw. Made by Bacho, Sweden. It was hanging on the wall in the shed, when we moved in. Changed the blade - works. But I do have a really nice Felco folding saw. Very handy and for smaller stuff, it is great!
When I bought this one it had a Bacho blade and the new blade I put on it is a Bacho.....I think the older blade had a better set to the teeth than the new. I don't think we have Felco here in the states.

I added a pocket to my backpack frame for a bow saw, my packing problem solved :) My old bow saw lives in that pocket to the point that I now consider it as part of the frame weight lol

I have used the cardboard sheath method also. I’ve used cardboard to cover all sort of sharp tools. Especially when transporting said tools. It works and that’s what counts.

I had to watch the video once more, I see we both have chosen the same type and size of saw for our backcountry wood cutting needs, When I pack mine I remove the blade and place it inside a 1 1/4 inch PVC tube with end caps it protect my pack gear from those sharp teeth.
beats the way I do it......I cover it with tape and cardboard and then have to pull tape chunks off the blade..lol
I have a bow saw just that style and size, but mine’s orange. It’s 30 years old and is a beast. I couldn’t disagree with you here. Little big but will never fail and very light weight.

Bow saw, swede saw they are great for camping. Bought my first one in Fairbanks many moons ago. Have always had at least one at the cabins I have lived in, in Alaska. Still have one at my cabin outside of Seward. Its heavy duty with a wing nut to tighten the blade. I use a split piece of garden hose for protection from the blade. Lesson learned the hard way.

I agree on the size and type. My bow saw is a 30" with a 12" deep throat. Good around the home site but too big for packing, almost bigger than needed around home :-)... I like that 24"er
.....Its the one I like the best. Smaller or bigger all have their places...but this is the size I like.
I tend to like a bit longer saw just because of how it clears the sawdust. The one you like looks about right. My nephew and I saw the issue with the more triangle shaped saw yesterday felling a tree.
A triangle shaped frame is better that nothing but its hard to see why anyone would choose that type of frame. Thanks for the comment Adam.

Good question. All last summer I carried a Condor Bushlore all day everyday. If you watch my log cabin building videos you'll see it. In the winter time I don't do a lot of traveling or building so I generally don't have a belt knife on me. I might have a pocket knife but if I did it would be an old one as thats all I have. In fact, almost all my gear is old stuff. I get most everything I use form flee markets and Yard sales, and I love antique tools and knives. Pretty much all my fixed blade knives are new, but my pocket knives are all antiques.

I'll admit that the saw i carry depends on what i plan on doing. i do keep a small folding saw in my craft kit. its very good for what i use it for. making small, precise, relief cuts and trimming while wood carving. but i keep a 24" bowsaw as my workhorse. its great for getting lots of work done, but i'd never use it for spoon carving. a lot of people these days want a 'one too' option. they dont understand that there are different tools for different jobs.

I found one of thoz saws at a yard sale... It's been collecting dust, guess I need to pull it out n put it to use!!
Remember..if the blade is old and rusty and doesn't cut well, don't be afraid o touch it up with a file and then set the teeth a little.....It will get better. Ive re-done old blades that looked like garbage and they ended up cutting great. A good bow saw will perform well so don't settle for less that an easy cutting saw.

I remember cutting a Christmas tree with my dad when I was kid. We used a curved pruning saw with a brown plastic handle.....I alway liked that saw....it made me think of a sword.
Good video Dave. I like your comment about the 24" saw being optimal stroke length. I also have an old 42" monster saw left to me my a good buddy who passed away. Pull saws can be totally awesome providing you get the correct length and teeth per inch for the wood you expect to cut, same applies to Bow Saws, seasoned or green hardwood or greenwood. With the pull saws it is advisable to learn the correct sawing method, many people still try to push as well as pull and complain when the blade bends. Of course it is still possible to re-sharpen a Bow Saw Blade, but not a pull/ folding saw. The more expensive pull saws have an a;loy or steel frame which is superior to plastics and they have a tooth and blade geometry that is superior to prevent binding. Hey WS. I saw in a video a while back some folks in Japan sharpening those big silky folding saws, so evidently they can be sharpened. Not sure about other folding saws. A lot of "tool box" type saws have super hard teeth and can't be sharpened. Thats why I love the old saws...the steel is the same all through the blade and you can sharpen them until you run out of steel....thats why its not hard to find a 100+ year old disston that just needs a touch up and a set and its ready to go.
Thanks for the update, I brought to Canada my dad's carpentry tools, they are stamped with his name, grandpa's name, great grandpa's name and one with great great grandpa's name. Interesting to note Disston was also a popular saw amongst these. One thing for sure, my eyesight would not allow me to sharpen a Silky saw...LOL!! I imagine that special tools would be needed for this task. The best wood chisels according to dad and grandpa were Ward and Payne and Robert Sorby (Sheffield England). Dad's axe is with me, it is a Gilpin 4lb Kent Pattern Axe. I recently discovered a 'Etna' crosscut hand saw, this still cuts great and I got it for $7 CDN.
Wow you have some old stuff! Thats awesome. I'm not surprised you have Dissyons in the mix..they were probably the biggest saw company ever in the USA. And When Henry Disston owned the company and his sons..he had every intention of making the greatest product money could buy.
Anything in a "kent" pattern must be an OLD axe!!! Its super , super cool to have tools that have been passed down through so many members of the same family. It makes me want to go stay my tools and give a few to my son. You truly have a unique situation.

@@Bushradical I did get me a new bow Saw yesterday for 7 bucks. I was surprised that it was so cheap 😂. But after using it. I learned that it cuts to the right 😂. But I was cutting a 8 inch log. For the price I didn't go wrong. I don't normally cut logs that big with a bow Saw. But the tree said take me take me. Lol 😂 oh it did me good to get out. I really got some beautiful wood. OH it's good therpy to get out. And enjoy the outdoors 😊

Check out arborist saws , I like to carry my old school Fanno limbing saw from back when I was climbing .I can slide it into the side of my pack , yeah , weighs a bit more ( maybe 16 oz + ) but cuts like nobodies business . A very aggressive blade with a slight curve to the blade. Great around the yard too, add a couple to your collection . 🌲

Hey Dave, Ive only tried the Agua Canyon saw a coupe times but it felt very solid, and it was a great design.....I don't know thats its any "more" stable than a standard bowsaw.....but that model is a good one for sure.
I may even "incorporate" a spot on my pack frame for an Army surplus saw I found recently online. It has a "two handed" design with a grip/handle that drops down on one side. Thanks for the help!
Nothin beats a tool that is designed for the job at hand. Folding saws are for “just in case” bow saws are for when you KNOW you are gonna cut something. I just don’t get how the cool folders are that much easier to pack. You will burn more energy using them than you ever will packing a real one
Good point. There are a lot that swear by the silky stuff but I just don't have the experience to comment on them. But the old bow saw is a no-brainer. Its tough, it works, its light.
Not true...there are big folding saws that are more efficient than your average bow saw.

Good points David...i do carry a Bacho folder in my buttpack, i have for a number of years now...i cannot remember the last time i used the thing.
Lately ive been using a Bucksaw with a 24" Bacho blade...works real well but a bit top heavy, if you know what i mean.
Many years ago i owned a Bow Saw. not sure what ever happened to it...maybe i'll drop into a pawn shop in town and see if i can dig one up.

Hey Woods. I heard lot about Silky saws too. They seem to be very popular with a lot of folks especially the new school of bushcraft. I guess they are a great saw but Ive never tried one. I'm hopelessly "old school" when it comes to gear. From what Ive seen of your videos so are you. I ma pick up one of those saw just to try it out but if I don't like it I would have to keep it to myself lol......or it would be another "Gransfers Bruks" situation where people are so passionate about the tool that it ends up being a hornets nest. lol

I found a I think a 16in? Bow saw in the woods few years ago while hiking on a snowmobile trail in the summer. Awesome little saw. Got a 2 pk of new blades for like $6 bucks. I carry it in the hack of my truck. Has come in handy many times. I carry a saw with me almost all the time, in my pocket. It's the saw on my Victronox Huntsman SAK. It more or less saved my life. It will be 5 years in May. I was walking with my dogs in the back forty of our family farm. I slipped and fell. I had completely tore my patella tendon. You can't walk with out one. The only thing I had was my SAK. I was able to crawl over and cut down a small sapling. I used it as a staff to get myself off the ground and used it as a crutch to walk the 1.5 miles back home. It's been an ordeal. I won't go into the woods with out a knife with a saw blade. I also carry a Leatherman Wave that has a saw blade also.

Thanks Dave. I'm still healing, but that's a whole other story. I started to carry a SAK w/ saw about 25 or so years ago after I saw my uncle used his to saw the pelvic bone of a deer. The SAK saws are double toothed. They are pretty amazing little cutters. The saws on the bigger lockblade SAKs, such as the Champ and Out rider are bigger. But the saw on the Rangerwood 55 is a beast. If you haven't heard of them, look them up. Made with wood scales and also has a locking main blade but has the biggest saw. Makes for a very nice multi tool. I hope to pick one up one of these days.

Just found your channel, Dave, and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve used a very similar saw around my property for many years, and it cuts like crazy and has lasted decades thus far. I’m new to Bushcraft, and in fact took my first pack hike yesterday, and I’m curious as to how exactly you pack this saw. I did just buy a folding saw that packs well, but all the while I was using it yesterday, I was wishing I could have had my trusty bow saw with me. Do you tie it to the outside of your pack?

I have a good bow saw like that. I use it at home. I'm leaning still toward getting a more packable saw though, and specifically at the Agawa Canyon Boreal 21. I've seen many reviews on it, and have seen others using it over and over again on extended trips. If any of you own a Boreal 21, please reply and let me know how you like it. Thanks.
No experience with one Alan....but the Agawa Bay, Agawa Canyon area of Ontario is beautiful country. I just checked out their website and it seems to be the only product they sell other than blades. I think these guys are probably pretty passionate about making a good product as its their sole product. If you get one let me know what you think.
That saw gets great reviews on Amazon. Dave do you have any experience with a Silky? I am also a bow saw guy but I hear a lot of good things about the Silky line of pull saws.
Alan Williams I own that saw! I have had it for about 2 years and love it. When you buy it you have a choice of 3 saw blades (all purpose, aggressive and dry wood) I went with the all purpose blade and haven't changed it yet. The build quality is great, it's lightweight, very easy to set up (5 seconds) and it cuts like a boss. It is a little pricy but its a good buy.
I've used an agawa for 2 years . Got it at the Outdoor Adventure show . in Toronto Ontario in 2016. Really like its performance. They are made in the town of Uxbridge north-east of Toronto Brian 77

The problem I’ve found with bow saws is that if you want a square cut for something like a chopping block, bow saws tend to wander and not give you a square cut. I switched to a Silky saw because of that and haven’t had any problems. Maybe my bow saw technique is bad? Bow saws are perfect for firewood though and I have several.
Get a silky 650, Three times faster than a Bow saw. I’ve got all the saws you have and usually prefer traditional tools but love my silky 650.
I know there are a lot of Silky fans out there...but I don't know anyone who owns one and Ive never got a chance to try one.

LOL Ever tried those "ring saws" the cheap ones with two rings and what appears to be some kind of cable, either the ones I tried were just cheap junk or they are probably the worst "survival" saw made. For a long time I just carried a 24" Sandvik pruning saw, now I just use a folding saw that fits in my pants pockets.
Yeah Ive tried those! They came in the plastic handled "Rambo " knives in the 80's......they would break in a minute! I don't know if there is a "good" one of those. But, if there is, I've never seen it.
Pocket cable saws are horrible, every one I've ever used broke very quickly. Pocket chain saws though can be very good. Similar idea but vastly different results.
If youre using a tent and you picked up firewood at the local gas station then a small folding saw will be plenty. If youre building a shelter, cutting firewood, and building a bridge to get to the camp site then the full size bow saw is a minimum.

Sure. I use a triangle file. Its probably best to remove the blade and then clamp tin a vise....you don't need to but it would work better. Just touch up the teeth and if the saw still cuts poor....then re-set them. There are good videos out there about setting saw teeth. Also...we're talking about a $5 tool here....just go for it and learn by doing. I'm sure you could use about any file...but a triangle gets down to the bottom of the gullet.

That is like the 10$ you use to get from harbor freight back in the mid 90, or that is how much I paid for one. Now I have a Macho 30 or 36 bow saw I paid 3$ for at a second hand store. I agree the bow saw is the best.what do you think of the saw cross cut saw, i.e. logging type saw blade?

Those saws work well, they take a lot of skill to keep "tuned up". But they will last longer than we will if treated right.

Try pocket chainsaws
They are by far the lightest solution, very small, very cheap, work on big logs and are quite fast.
With a rope attacked you can even cut braches from far away
Even the good ones are quite cheap but when you buy one then:
- better longer than shorter (90 cm is a minimum)
- get one with enough theet

I'm wondering if you've ever used some of the non-folding saws like the Silky Zubat. I just watched a video that promised to: "Put to bed the debate about which saw is better, a Silky saw or a bow saw." However, then the video cut to: "Sponsored by Silky Saws, the sharpest, fastest, and most capable saws. Go check them out on my online store." I'm sorry, but that's just a BAD look. I've always used a bow saw, growing up I used dad's on the wall of the garage. I was just wondering if you've tried them, and what you think. The Zubat doesn't close, so no weak spot.
What’s your views on teeth per inch? What’s ideal etc? This is something that interests me as I’ve not needed to used saws a whole lot but I’m changing my views on it.
They make blades for green wood and blades for dry hardwood...If you are pruning trees go for the green, if you are camping and are going to be cutting firewood, then go for the dry hardwood blade.

I was going to ask about the different types of bowsaw blades and where to get the best ones, but since you've only had two blades on that saw, you may not have very strong opinions on that.
Good question. Bahco makes the best blades IMO. Both the blades on this saw have been dry wood blades. You can also get green wood blades that have both teeth and rakers. The dry wood blade has only triangle shaped teeth. If you plan to cut fire wood ( dry wood) get the dry wood blade .....I really don't see where the green wood blade would shine because when do you purposely want to cut green wood? if you were pruning fruit trees I would still use the dry blade because its a easier blade to "start" a cut with IMO. If ou had green rounds you were cutting up to split and season ...then maybe a green wood blade would be better............but a Chainsaw might be better yet ;)

Good question. I think Bahco makes the best blade. They are made in Sweden if I remember right. You may have to order one off eBay, but it might last you forever......I just re sharpen mine when they need it. Also, I have used a couple cheap blades that didn't have much "set" to the teeth, so the saw always wanted to "bind" I would get the best blade you can get your hands onto. Even the best bow saw blade you can get is still probably less than $10 and it will serve you well.
I'm assuming you've heard of Silky Saws but I'll pile on.
My Gomboy cuts noticeably faster and smoother than my hardware store pruning saw like the one you showed. If you ever get the urge to try something new... get a Silky they really are great.
Silky's are on my Radar. Ive never had one or used one but I know a lot of folks that love them. I may order one just to get to try it out.

A folded piece of cardboard was the blade cover. The saw got dropped with Brooke, so I didn't have it on the Hike.

How do you feel about the wooden framed buck saws? Just wondering as they seem to have a strong frame and pack down well.
Brooke bought me one years ago. It was super cool, and made by a local guy. I never used it though.....I guess it wasn't for me. My impression at the time was that it had too many parts and I just didn't want to mess with it. It might have been awesome but having "parts" turned me off to it.

Preach my brother! I use a foldable bow saw. The agawa canyon boreal 21. It is a great saw..A 21" bow saw can slip down the back of many packs and a cover for the blade can be made with a squished pvc pipe. Great video. Bow saws 4 life lol
