    I had a 1989 Town Car and I was very fond of it. I had to sell it because I had a stroke.
    Otherwise I'd still be driving it. Gold-ish color with tan leather interior and plush carpet= gorgeous. As far as the older stuff goes 1971 2-door New Yorker Brougham was the last one I owned. I had a 440 that could lay down 12 feet or more rubber on the highway while going at speed. Now that's a car! What a "boat!" Over 19 feet long.
    I could carry an Eldorado trunk lid in the Chrysler's trunk! It's true. 1957 Lincoln Premiers were the cream, although I never owned one. The dash style was futuristic.

      I always hated that dashboard. So plain and unattractive for what was supposed to be a luxury car.

    I spent several years combing archives in the US and Europe while I was developing and the producing the first series on The History Channel. While producing the subsequent 200+ automotive history programs I continued to amass a sizable archive and decided a couple of years ago to start sharing it on TH-cam. It's taking a long time to digitize and add, create Quicktimes, upload and all the descriptions but I'm happy to see others like these clips as much as I do. Thanks for viewing.

    The body roll, the exhaust spew, the dive when it brakes...those old luxobombers are better in memory than reality.

      MassiveFins Yeah What do I know right. I only own a 57 premiere myself and before that had a 62 imperial. My dad used to work for GM in the 50’s so I guess his experiences also don’t mean anything. Get your head out of your backside sunshine...accept there are people who actually know what they’re talking about.
      Anyway couldn’t care less if you believe me or not. Look up car and track clips from the old days and see how the mopars coped with hard braking.

      The 58 plymouths went out at night and murdered the owner’s enemies but they were self repairing if you loved it enough.

    Sir May I congratulate you on this fine collection of Ford family of cars. The Lincoln for 1957 was by far an outstanding model. They were coming into their own against Cadillac and Chrysler Imperial. 5/5.

      Get some PST suspension bushings and upgraded tires and it will feel a lot better. Also some stiffer shocks and redone springs in front and back it will ride a lot tighter.... BUT do you REALLY want to go for a stiff ride in a nice Float Boat like this Lincoln??????

    • @tjhaywood100
      @tjhaywood100 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I had one, I'd stiffen it up just a tad. Not for handling, per se. But for a slightly less "floaty" ride.

  • @madinore
    @madinore 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I own a '57 Premiere Landau just like this one and I have to say that the body lean displayed baffles me. I used my Lincoln as a daily driver for years, it was always stock and I drove it aggressively. Body lean was minimal and overall handling was first-rate. I should ad that reviewers at the time said the same thing, describing body lean as minimal, and those reviewers could be just as hard on a car as today's auto critics. I can only speculate that the Lincoln in this road test is going much faster than the footage suggests and the turns are a lot tighter than they appear. As for the smoking - that's another problem that I never encountered - but a road test from the period shows an identical appearing car with the writer commenting that the car had been used by the advertising department for still photos and was way out of tune - the Ford engineers apparently apologized for this snafu, but the test went on anyway.

    • @exxusdrugstore300
      @exxusdrugstore300 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The body lean might have not been as noticeable inside the car, when I drive my truck I know it leans like a drunken goat but it's hard to tell from inside the cab.

    I own an original 1953 Lincoln Capri 2 door hardtop, and that era of cars were real road cars, the Auto magazines of those days really raved about the 52-55 Lincolns and their cornering ability. They won the La Carerra Pan American Mexican Road race in those years, even beating Ferrari on one occasion
    The 57 lincolns were very big and heavy, and longer and were not designed for road racing like the earlier Lincolns.
    Too bad the 52-55 Lincolns are so incredibly rare to find, what an absolutely wonderful car.

    • @curbozerboomer1773
      @curbozerboomer1773 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 56 Lincolns are the most expensive collectibles today...the 57s--which I prefer--had much larger fins, and many people think that design was just a little too much!...they are wrong, IMO.

      @@Rick1959 McCahill bought his dad a used one around 1935. It sat in a storage facility and the bill went unpaid for some time until it was sold to McCahill. Well, soon after the bootlegger who owned it wanted to buy it back and said he was out of town for a while and that's why it sat for so long but McCahill said "sorry but I already gave it to my dad". The bootlegger shrugged it off and walked away.

    Wow! On the skidpad the outside rocker panel almost touches the ground - something that I have actually SEEN happen with a '58 T-Bird. No wonder the reviewers were awed by the handling of the larger, more powerful '57 Imperial. The exhaust smoke indicates that the carb might be loading up too...

    I did a little research on this test and learned that in some of the brake tests Uncle Tom got this Lincoln up to over 90 m.p.h. before he slammed on the binders. I think it's possible that the car is moving at a similar velocity when it exhibits so much lean. How much lean do you think you'd get out of a new Lexus or Mercedes if it was taking tight turns at over 90 on a track that isn't banked? Earlier versions of these Lincolns were raced successfully, generally winning in their class - from experience I can tell you that they handle great.

    At the very end you see the six-pointed Lincoln star. This would last until after the 1960 model year when the Premiere and Capri were discontinued and the four-pointed Continental star would be used to identify the whole Lincoln lineup, which would be just the Lincoln Continental until the introduction of a new Continental Mark III in 1969.

    The big guy at 6:39 is Tom McCahill, veteran auto tester who wrote for Mechanix Illustrated. Old Chrome Dome as he was known. I know he liked the earlier Road Race Lincolns but I bet he didn't have much praise for the suspension on these beasts!

      I think this is why this comparison film was never made, the ford cars simply were bad handling, like GM. Tom worked for Popular Mechanics and did the Chrysler comparisons also. I think this video is Ford attempting to copy that type of film but they soon realized the video only made them look horrible.

      was seeing the same thing..... running RICH for sure!!!! I think this test drive was taken from a car that wasn't meant to be test driven....... If it's true the Vid was taken in July 1956 that means this was one of the first run '57 production cars...... strange to have one run this rich and that the body roll is so much! Since it's a 4 door Landau, maybe it was heavier than the other models and they hadn't had time to adjust the suspension for the extra weight?

    I just happened on this Vid. A sad true story ,along about 1961-62,some good Canadian Friends of ours bought one of these.One snowy Sunday they were coming to church on a Maine country road and was 1/2 up a curve to left fairly steep hill when a 51 Hudson came a little too fast from the other direction and went into a sideways skid straight at their 1957 Lincoln .Mr Hatt only had time to bring the Lincoln to a dead stop.That Hudson broke in completely in two over the front of the Lincoln.The two people in the Hudson died. Nobody was hurt in the Lincoln except one of the teenage girls she stiffened up when she saw what was coming and hurt her back. her sister fainted and nothing happened to her.The Ford Motor company safety padding kept the parents from harm.Mr Hatt said later the Hudson motor kept running until the carburetor ran out of gas.
    Back to the Video,The man driving that car is "Uncle Tom" McCahill. For over 20 yrs he tested 2 cars a month for Mechanic Illustrated.
    Mostly likely he was testing that "New Lincoln" and Ford or the Tire Folks(prolly Firestone) had him include a tire test...so he was pushing it hard on turns,causing her to roll more than normal sane driving would ,that roll explains the rich mixture coming out the back The fuel on the 4 barrel was sloshing gas over to one side hard and the carb float was rising and dumping more gas in than the engine needed.I believe I still have the mag w/that test for the month.
    The 57s were cool...but the 1956 (Big L) Premier stole my heart after a 110mph ride in my older cousins' car.

    wow... Them old cars really did suck only half the fuel the burned. I used to have a fleet of 1970's early 80's milestone cars, and all of them were terrible compared to today's much cleaner lean burning vehicles. No matter how much computer technology they threw at a carburetor, it was still a mini-toilet bowl sitting on top of the intake manifold. Flushing fuel down the intake runners.

    I'm the first to admit I'm a lover of ALL cars American, and dislike most imports, but this barge is an embarrassment, poor design, lousy mechanics, and horrible engineering, no wonder Chrysler Co. cars were so well regarded as far as ride/handling and design. all this Lincoln does is belch black smoke out the dual exhaust from a poorly set up carburetor, and lean to the point of nearly being out of control, really does show how much better Chrysler's torsion bar front suspension and wide placed leaf springs were. Too bad Chrysler lost there way in the later 70's/80's.

    • @blue2elmer1
      @blue2elmer1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      harleyguyinmilw All these old American steel had very poor handling. I had a early 50's Dodge Belvedere and leaned as much as this Lincoln, even with its Mopar Torsion Bars. You had to really know what you were doing to drive these old cars. No precision whatsoever. In those days you had to get a Jaguar or some other European make to even come close to sporty handling. Even the early T-Birds were not that good at handling. and the Muscle cars of the 70's? well the Mustangs had somewhat good handling, and some but not all Mopars. GM's had amazing handling for the era, specially Oldsmobile muscle cars like the Judge. But like I said for the era. Going straight was no problem though. they all handled great on the straight line.

    • @dgoldman2846
      @dgoldman2846 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need to read up on your cars my friend. There was no such thing as a Dodge Belvedere and no such thing as an Olds Judge.... so I think that you may not be telling the whole truth.... remember we are comparing apples to oranges here. It's like taking a 2016 car and comparing it to a Jetson's space mobile that may be available in 2040. So this discussion is going nowhere....... the suspension was Good or acceptable to the standards of those days..... I am sure they handled just Fine for the time... there was not as much traffic as there is today and therefore the concern for safety and handling was not priority

      blue.... what the **** is a dodge belvedere? no such thing and no early 50s mopar had torsion bars. they came in 1957 (model year). so its obvious you have no clue what you are talking about.
      i drive one of those "poor handling" cars over here in germany, the land of fast roads, since 1988 and couldn't be happier. btw mileage is 330+ k with a never rebuild engine that still runs like new and never caused any problems (since 1959). that car with some inexpensive mods corners faster than my brothers new CLS.
      that 57 lincoln is beautiful.

    The Chrysler is junk my father owned one,half the time you couldn't keep a transmission in it (torque flight),was always having constant electrical issues and when the weather gets cold it didn't want to start,you constantly had to take off the distributor cap and wipe it dry, otherwise it wouldn't run...57 Chrysler was pure garbage compared to the Lincoln PERIOD.

      4 gauge Chrysler had loads of issues in production during that period. They were known for engineering and then it went wrong in assembly. Not sure exactly why but I'm assuming decisions were made that cut corners. Then again some of their engineering ideas may not have ready for prime time.

      +4 gauge Wow musta got a lemon. Having to mess with Chrysler electrical components is part of the fun ownership. I always carried a tool box extra alternator, voltage regulator, balance resistor etc. + a hammer in case the starter got stuck. I like all cars and my favorite is the car that is not giving me problems. I have owned a lot of cars. I would sooner have an older car than the newer ones. Now we are at the mercy of the "parts replacers." Most of the good mechanics are either retired or have passed on.
