This was interesting. It’s good to know the pros and cons of every profession before you enter into it. But at the same time too, some things that are pros could be cons depending on the viewpoint and vice versa. Is it pretty straightforward to get a job in the cybersecurity field?

I think getting a general beginner level cyber security cert like security+ helps too bc thats what employers may look for directly on your resume esp for early career roles, good luck Kwam! :)

Cons are definitely needed to be said when people present any kind of career. I noticed people never bring up the cons of working in cybersecurity, because there is this constant push of getting people into cybersecurity. The way people try to sell off the idea of working in cybersecurity is almost like they are selling a get rich quick scheme. They talk about how lucrative the field can be for many people, but leave out key details of what happens to many who try to pursue this field. They never talk about the stress level of working in Cybersecurity or the heavy amount of work you have to do in the field. They also never mention that for many people trying to get into the field that your first tech job will probably be a crappy help desk job where you are constantly dealing with idiots who can’t even find their wifi to connect their home devices to!!
This is really eye opening,so many people leave these points out in their videos. Grant Collins and John Hammond are the only ones I have heard mention the cons of this industry in the same manner. You added some new points though,thanks.

so true especially on the point of constant learning. In every single meeting I have with customers / prospects ( because am cysec sales Engineer) I learn about a new thing or tech or method etc... and I feel exhausted now after 11 years of doing this. You need to always read about new things and the experience that I built during the last 6-7 years lets say is not so relevant today !! everything is "NG" and if u want to keep up with trend to keep your job or advance a step forward, forget about a personal life or family etc..
I think corporate IT/cyber can be much slower, consider cyber security is almost always the last concern of the C suite guys. Can also be bad in that cyber budget is small and you end up in a small team. Trick is to learn stuff yourselves at work and off work.

i would say the bar for cyber security especially without any experience/degree in cyb/info-sec is not easier/easy-ish...i say that because IMH ive personally only seen it a few handful of times in my career, cyber/info-sec encompasses the culmination of best practices & risk from the whole scope of IT, thus on the off-chance of those who do get in with NO experience/degree, the learning curve is extremely steep, deep, & massive, not only that but there is often the "imposter syndrome" that comes along with it...which as you well noted, once you realize who the people who really now their stuff are, you realize how high the bar really is at the senior/architect levels.
Yeah I agree, after working with those who've been in the industry for 10+ years, the difference in experience/skillsets is massive, and it can be hard to pick all of these things up if you dont already have some cyber security skillset or are able to learn really quickly. Thank you for sharing!
Hi Sandra. Question: I have heard the aptitude test to get into full-stack dev bootcamps are a bit difficult with only 25% getting in on the first try. Can you speak to how challenging the aptitude test for cyber-security bootcamps are, if there is one (I have found no mention of them)? Thanks!
It definitely depends on the bootcamp i would say, i have a friend who did a bootcamp at UPenn and he only had his GED so you can definitely get into one, for his he actually spent a lot of time at my college just hanging out and doing coding projects together lol, tbh learning coding is hard when no one is looking through your code when you get stuck, i would focus on a good teacher and good paired programming partner. You can get an idea of the bootcamps thru looking up the top 15 or so popular data structures to learn n try to build those out from scratch (after knowing basic coding syntax ofc) good luck Derek! :)
Oh i just realized you asked for security bootcamps too lol, most of them will probs go over foundations (CIA triad, cyber kill chain, basic linux cmds, etc) but try to find one that has partner companies that hire from them directly so you have a good idea of where to start the job search when you graduate even if its not a guaranteed job, otherwise any pentesting bootcamp that uses real CTF/hackthebox challenges would be awesome!
as technology evolves, so should the analyst, CIO or whomever is in that situation, but if anyone thinks that you have learned something and that is it!!! then you are wrong, cybersecurity is not! not, for everyone; if you are lazy then you should not be in this environment.

Hey Sandra, I’m in a predicament where I want to get into the IT field and take the “Bootcamp” route because I don’t have the time to get back to school right now. I had an idea of doing a coding bootcamp but once I started reading more about “ Cyber security” I noticed I’m leaning more towards it but these bootcamps are very expensive and I’ve seen people get jobs with the “ coding bootcamp” but I don’t know anyone that have done a cyber security bootcamp. My question is, is it harder to get a job with not experience and just a cyber security bootcamp in oppose to the coding bootcamp ? does cyber security require way more background than the coding ? Or are they both on the same level when it comes to job seeking

I'm graduating Rutgers with a Econ bachelor's degree this January. I'm 36 years old and have been working with my family's computer store for 15 years doing mainly hardware and software services. I would like to get into the cybersecurity field but have no experience. I am currently taking Udemy online course on Python. I was hoping for guidance on how to get started in the career path the right and most efficient way.
I did a bootcamp and most importantly I learned to network with everyone you know and use ALL of your resources in your city that will help you in your job search
Be confident and definitely know your stuff, do projects and build your online portfolio or at least make a really good Resume and CV. Leave thank you emails after every interview and say what you couldn't say during the interview about a mistake or something. Improve your communication and be direct and result-oriented when you talk. These are not iron clad but just in my experience haha
Very interesting video. I'm also working towards in becoming a Pen Tester myself but my only experience in the Field is just a BA in Cybersecurity. Currently working on C# and then other such as Python. Batch, Azure, AWS. etc before go deep into Security+ I have a question though 🤔 - If your testing an App or a website to make it as fool proof as possible, would you normal go into a Virtual Sanbox of that specific thing your working on and use some virus or approved controlled methods in order to find any open ports into these projects, remedy the weakness and log them?🤔

Thanks so much for watching :) there are actually a good amount of PM/Scrum master roles in cyber security bc for every software/code deployment for security apps, there needs to be a PM managing some jira board etc and cyber security professionals might work w them to ensure all the testing/QA/DevOps is done correctly and efficiently, hope this helps! :)
Can you work swing shifts like 3 to 10pm? is there all 8 hour shifts or is there other options like 3, 12 hr shifts etc...? Can you work as an independent contractor?
Hey thanks for watching! My role doesn’t allow me to be that flexible since i have to be online when my team is on (usually 8-5 or 9-6) but other companies/roles may allow 2nd shift/night shift where you can work later hours and many companies hire contractors as well, it really depends on how strict the company is and whether or not you need to be online when the rest of the team is on, good luck on finding the best role for you!
Hey there! Nope, most people in cyber don’t code unless you’re on red team or ethical hacking and need to write a custom script or payload, there are cyber Security engineers that may write scripts for automation but definitely not required! Mostly it’s learning how to use tools like burpsuite, nmap, splunk, etc and knowing how to problem solve!

Hello Sandra, I have no prior tech experience or job experience but I am thinking about signing up for a Cyber Security boot camp, it's 13k for the boot camp and they say they will help me find employment after completion. I was wondering will it be difficult to even find a job after I get the certificate since I have no prior experience? Is it Worth it?

I know a lot of viewers are considering careers in cyber so i didnt want to just feed you guys rainbows and butterflies band not talk about some of the cons, i still like what i do and i think every job has its negatives so at the end of the day it’s just about doing what you wanna do! :)

I currently work in cyber security, these are just to help people make a well rounded decision, every job has its downsides, cyber security is definitely still a great field to go into
Cyber is boring and I got out after many years. This video does a good job at explaining a large part of my own reasoning. I eventually left because I was finding it deeply unfulfilling (you're not building anything, you're not changing lives, you're just ticking boxes and telling people what to do) and didn't like the people or the culture. It was very 'holier than thou' and treated non-security people as stupid zoo exhibits to be laughed at, that and the red team side of things was just needlessly vindictive and destructive. Lots of those people pretty much commit crime off the clock and call it 'research'. The money is the only thing that makes it worth it - and once you look past that, you're done. I had CISSP and CCSP for a while then let them lapse because of the huge maintenance efforts and costs, that and nobody being interested in them. No point in certs like that where people will just hire a former cat groomer who came out of a bootcamp.

Can you work swing shifts like 3 to 10pm? is there all 8 hour shifts or is there other options like 3, 12 hr shifts etc...? Can you work as an independent contractor?
Hey thanks for watching! My role doesn’t allow me to be that flexible since i have to be online when my team is on (usually 8-5 or 9-6) but other companies/roles may allow 2nd shift/night shift where you can work later hours and many companies hire contractors as well, it really depends on how strict the company is and whether or not you need to be online when the rest of the team is on, good luck on finding the best role for you!

Hey there! Nope, most people in cyber don’t code unless you’re on red team or ethical hacking and need to write a custom script or payload, there are cyber Security engineers that may write scripts for automation but definitely not required! Mostly it’s learning how to use tools like burpsuite, nmap, splunk, etc and knowing how to problem solve!

Hello Sandra, I have no prior tech experience or job experience but I am thinking about signing up for a Cyber Security boot camp, it's 13k for the boot camp and they say they will help me find employment after completion. I was wondering will it be difficult to even find a job after I get the certificate since I have no prior experience? Is it Worth it?
Idk where you live, but Experis academy has a paid 3 month course + they will employ you after the training period.

I just made this because i recently made a vid on 7 reasons why you should go into cybersecurity and those are all the reasons i’m in the field now, but i also felt like i wanted to give you guys a realistic full picture of everything, not just the good. I know a lot of viewers are considering careers in cyber so i didnt want to just feed you guys rainbows and butterflies band not talk about some of the cons, i still like what i do and i think every job has its negatives so at the end of the day it’s just about doing what you wanna do! :)

Cyber is boring and I got out after many years. This video does a good job at explaining a large part of my own reasoning.
I eventually left because I was finding it deeply unfulfilling (you're not building anything, you're not changing lives, you're just ticking boxes and telling people what to do) and didn't like the people or the culture. It was very 'holier than thou' and treated non-security people as stupid zoo exhibits to be laughed at, that and the red team side of things was just needlessly vindictive and destructive. Lots of those people pretty much commit crime off the clock and call it 'research'.
The money is the only thing that makes it worth it - and once you look past that, you're done. I had CISSP and CCSP for a while then let them lapse because of the huge maintenance efforts and costs, that and nobody being interested in them. No point in certs like that where people will just hire a former cat groomer who came out of a bootcamp.
