How Should Christians Use Their Vote?

  • How should Christians think about voting? Is a vote a full endorsement of everything a candidate stands for? A reflection of your entire identity? Not so much. Kaitlyn Schiess explains what a vote is-and just as importantly, what it isn’t, and why a vote is only one piece of a much larger puzzle of civic engagement and faithful living.

I vote based on how I was raised in church and by what Jesus teaches us:
    Feed the hungry
    Clothe the poor
Help the migrant (something that Jesus was when He was a baby)
    Give to those in need
    Love your neighbor
An ideal based on COMPASSION, a subcategory of the Fruit of the Spirit Kindness, and ideal that is SEVERELY lacking in the broader American Christianity today.
If we're going to base politics on religion, Christianity specifically, THIS is how our vote should be determined, policies that follow the teachings of Jesus.
EDIT: Just to make it clear because I don't think it is... it's not Trump.

As an Australian, I'm outside your political bubble, but of course, what happens in your election will impact the whole world. As such, I find this video particularly refreshing in that it doesn't endorse one party/leader over the other. Ultimately, scripture doesn't endorse democracy at all, but says it is God who raises up kings & rulers. So whilst you have the right to have a say in your democracy, you should consider the right not to have to vote a blessing as well, because then you're not complicit in any result. Instead, spend your time praying, & just be still & know the He is God. God bless you guys.

Some of the discourse about Christian nationalism seems to believe that any Christian involvement in democratic politics that is informed by faith-derived values is Christian nationalism. Important to distinguish what it is and isn't. Everyone votes according to their values. You don't have to try and identify whatever the lowest common denominator for the entire culture is and vote for that to avoid "Christian nationalism".

This articulates some ideas I've talked about in a pastoral context.
The moral weight we have put on the vote is just too incredible. The choices we have on offer are both complex and binary. Complex because each party has a position on nearly everything under the sun, and binary because there are really only two viable options for the presidency. So, no matter who I vote for, I'm most likely going to inadvertently support something I strongly disagree with. This has been a glaring issue in the past few election cycles.
But prioritization based on offices is a great way to approach this. When I tell people that I simply do not factor in domestic issues when I vote for president, they are often shocked. But my reasoning is simple: the president has the most concentrated power in foreign policy and oversight of the military. And so foreign policy is my #1 issue for the presidency and there isn't a close second.

Matthew 25:31-46 is my voter's guide. There, Jesus describes the Judgment of the Nations (people groups). As responsible citizens, we should recognize that Jesus is here giving us the answers to the Final Exam! Heed them, for they have eternal import! It is important to see what He mentions there, but even more importantly, what He does not mention:
Matthew 25:31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
IMHO, if we heed this warning and obey, all the other issues that obsess us will take care of themselves. Abortion is, after all, mostly poverty-driven. You have only to compare the abortion rate in Switzerland where abortion is legal during the first 12 weeks (6 per 1000 pregnancies) to the U.S., which has gone up 11% after abortion bans went into effect in many states (16 per 1000 pregnancies).

Which is why many believers choose not to vote at all.

God doesn't command His children to be devoted to a political party or to vote. He does, however, command us to abstain from ALL evil and to put our confidence in Him alone. Both sides are evil and preach the same false gospel. "Vote for me and I'll make America a heaven on earth."
There are three choices in this election:
1.) A party and a false savior who support sin.
2.) A party that rallies around a false savior who fits the biblical description of the lawless one. A man and a movement who are the epitome of blasphemy, heresy, and idolatry. A man who retweets he's like Jesus, claims that "he alone" can save us, and intends on pursuing Satan's objective of devouring others (retribution).
Trump has described at length the dangerous and disturbing actions he says he will take if he wins the presidency. His rallies offer a steady stream of such promises and threats - things like prosecuting political opponents and using the military against U.S. citizens. He's mentioned mass deportations, persecutions, imprisoning political opponents, executions, putting the homeless in camps, and abandoning allies.
It's the mission field that Christians are called to love and evangelize that he wants to go after. It's all who oppose him (including Christians). It reminds me of the poem 'First they came'.
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
    Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me - Martin Niemoller
3.) The Lord Jesus Christ. He is the only one who can bring us peace, consolation, redemption, and hope.
"There's none righteous, no not one."
The left and right wings are on the same bird. Equally guilty in the headlong flight toward a false gospel. Only Jesus is the Answer.

Slavery was outlawed and the matter settled legally BEFORE everyone's minds changed about owning people. Each subsequent generation under that law was trained under that moral system. Likewise when Roe was decided, everyone at the time agreed that abortion should be "safe, legal, and rare". But the generations raised under that ruling now openly celebrate it and use it as a means of birth control. Are over 70 million abortions in 50 years what you call "rare"? Every law is a codified moral system. Whatever laws a society chooses to live by are the moral systems we choose to pass on to our next generation. As to that? Yeah, they were interrupting her speech with a variety of heckles. Of course they were in the wrong place; in particular, they should have been at "the smaller [rally] down the street", which was her full response. It was a witty reply to someone who was engaging in bad-faith debate tactics (ie, interrupting when it wasn't their turn to talk.)
Y'know. Someone who didn't know their place, and was acting above their station. One might say "getting uppity" and thinking that their words were more important than the person whose rally they were at and who organized it and who was the primary speaker. But they were conservative white Christians talking about something important to them, so perhaps you believe that such conventions don't apply in this situation.
And if the argument is "they had every right to be there?" OK, fine - but they also had every reasonable expectation of being called out for their bad-faith debate tactics, and escorted off the premises.

3 Reasons why Christians can vote Democrat:
    1. Christians can vote Democrat because God is pro-choice (not pro-abortion). God does not force his morality on you nor coerce you to do what is right. Hence, God is pro-freewill and thus pro-choice. He honors your choice independent of whether it is right or wrong. If God can be pro-choice then a Christian can vote Democrat and be pro-choice.
    2. Christians can vote Democrat because a fetus is not a human being so terminating a pregnancy is not a sin. A fertilized egg (zygote) has a POTENTIAL to become a human being (like Adam with functional organs) but is NOT a human being until birth. When God breathed into Adam's nostrils Adam took his first breath and became a living soul. Without breathing, all of Adam's functional organs would die and death will soon follow. Likewise a newly born, like Adam, must breathe or death will ensue. Hence a human being's life starts with birth (first breath) and ends with death (last breath). So an unborn zygote (even with human DNA) is still not a human being (with functional organs) and thus does not have the full rights of a human being (right to life) until birth. Examples of life beginning at birth: Bible says it would have been better that Judas was not born. It did not say conceived. Jesus says you need to be born again not conceived again. Jesus mentions people with infirmities as being born that way and not conceived that way. Given that a fetus cannot be qualified as a human being (with functional organs), the fetus cannot be called a baby, nor a child, nor a senior citizen. To do so would be disingenuous.
    3. Christians can vote Democrat because abortion is not murder so terminating a pregnancy is not a sin. The sixth commandment "Thou shall not kill" is taken out of context when used to support abortion as murder. Many claim that "Thou shall not kill" applies to a zygote or fetus. But Jesus said that the 10 commandments can be summarized as to love God and to love your neighbor (not fetus). If it applied to a fetus then the following commands would be true: Thou shall not commit adultery with a fetus, Thou shall not lie to fetus, Thou shall not covet what a fetus has, and Thou shall not steal from a fetus. Since Thou shall not kill does not apply to a fetus claimers must find another bible verse to support their claim that terminating a fetus is murder. Otherwise, abortion is not murder.
A Reason Why Christians Can't Vote Republican
Many can't see how Christians can vote Republican because Republicans support a convicted sexual predator, lover of strife and discord, proclaimed adulterer, unstoppable reviler, genitals grabber, and pathological liar who is totally opposite of Christ whom they profess to serve. Some say that it's OK to follow an evil leader because God can use an evil leader for His own purposes. But doesn't the Old Testament show that after God uses the evil leader He punishes and even destroys the evil leader and followers?
The bible does say who you should vote for. You should vote for someone who will give you a "tranquil and quiet life full of godliness and dignity". (1Tim 2:1-2) Who can that be? It is someone who is the most Christ-like. Why? Because integrity and character matters (by their fruits you shall know them) and policies don't matter as much because many candidates once elected don't follow their party, platform, and promised policies. Integrity and character are time-tested indicators of how leaders will successfully react to and handle future crises. If voting means a choice between small Satan or big Satan then don't vote at all. We are not required to make a vote that would sear our conscience.
At the end of the day God will not ask you whether you voted for a Democrat or Republican. Instead He will ask you whether you knew His Son, did you share the Gospel, and did you show the love of God - help the hungry, thirsty, naked, sick and imprisoned. Did you love Me? Did you love your neighbor? Did you love your enemies?

No He doesn't, but why would a Born Again, Bible reading, spirit filled Christian choose to do what is WRONG? I understand one falling into sin, and repenting, but not when you KNOW you're voting for a party that goes against His word.
MY RESPONSE: Comment #1 claimed that God doesn't force morality on you nor coerce you to do the right thing. You agreed. You asked: Why would a true Christian choose to do wrong?: He wouldn't. If he thought it was sin, he would choose not to sin. (Rom 14:23) However, the Bible for many issues does not explicitly say whether an issue is a sin or not. Even after referencing more scriptures the sin determination cannot be made. For those issues it wouldn't be appropriate for us not to force/coerce what we think is right upon another especially when we don't know their full situation. It is better to leave up that up to that individual and God.
Here's an example where God does not force nor coerce morality:
Isn't infanticide a horrible sin even to God? Then why in Ezekiel God said He hates infanticide and yet allowed Israel the choice to sacrifice their children to idols? Because God does not force morality on Israel nor coerce on Israel to do what is right. Of course God punished them later because freedom to choose is not freedom from consequences. Doesn't God say "Vengeance is mine" and in the book of Romans "every man shall give account of himself to God"? This is the case where sanctity of choice supersedes the sanctity of life.
      -------------
      YOUR CLAIM: Regarding comment #2
I respectfully disagree. God told Jeremiah that " I knew you BEFORE I formed you in the womb, BEFORE you were born I set you apart. ( Jer.1:5)
MY RESPONSE: Comment #2 proved that a fetus is not a human being so terminating a pregnancy is not a sin. You weren't able to disprove. Instead you provided Jer 1:5. Below I prove that Jer 1:5 is taken out of context because it fails to elevate a fetus to the level of a human being. Hence the fetus is not a human being.
JEREMIAH 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.
This verse indicates that BEFORE the womb and BEFORE his birth Jeremiah was designated by God to be a consecrated prophet for all nations just like Paul was to be a Christian and an Apostle to the Gentiles (Galatians 1:15).
The "know" mentioned in this verse does not mean "know as a human being". In fact, this "know" is before the womb. If taken literally this would mean that God knew Jeremiah as a pre-existent soul before conception. Since this is an unlikely interpretation, the "know" must be metaphorical and would be similar to "The Lord KNOWS those who are His" (2 Tim 2:19, Numbers 16:5) and in a negative connotation Jesus said "I never KNEW you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness." (Matthew 7:23)
This verse shows that God has a plan for Jeremiah's life, but being formed, consecrated, and appointed does NOT mean that these references apply to a human being in the womb. Hence after-birth terms such as baby, child, individual, human being, personal, yourself, and ourself does not apply to a fetus and must not be used to elevate the fetus to the status of a human being.
In fact the "form you in the womb" would align with the first breath perspective of Adam being "formed" from the dust of the ground. At this stage Adam was not a living human being. The taking of the first breath (at birth) would be tied to Adam becoming a living soul, similarly for Eve, and a newly born.
Since the fetus is living and has human DNA it can be officially called human; however, it is NOT a human BEING because the life of the fetus is dependent on mother's umbilical cord and womb environment. The "being" part of human being means to be independent, separate, and self-sustaining. The fetus is human but not a human being until birth.
There's also the problem of associating a zygote to a human being because the zygote is not in the "Image Of God". For example, the Bible says not to spill man's blood because man was made in the image of God. However, the zygote does not start to develop blood cells till the 7th day and does not have a pumping heart till around the 5th week. Also the image of God refers to AFTER BIRTH entities like Adam and Eve, and people (men) who we can curse (James 3:9), and Christ as the Image Of God (Col 1:15, Heb 1:13) and NOT to PRE-BIRTH entities like zygotes and fetuses.
Hence this verse fails to elevate a fetus to a level of a human being. Thus the right to life of a human being cannot be applied to a fetus. Hope this helps.
      -------------
      YOUR CLAIM: Regarding comment #3
God and God alone controls conception and He opens and closes a woman's womb. ( Gen.29:31;30:2, 20, 22:1 Sam. 1:5,6; Ruth 4:13)
MY RESPONSE: WRONG! God is not alone in controlling conception because God decided to limit his omnipotence and has allowed man to control conception. Today conception can be done using IVF in a petri dish even if, as you say, a woman's womb is closed. Over 12 million babies have been born worldwide via IVF and about 2% of births in the US are IVF. Why do you think God controlled conception in the past but is unable to control conception today? Why does God need our help today?
Comment #3 proved that abortion is not murder so terminating a pregnancy is not a sin. It proved that "Thou shalt not kill" command cannot be applied to a fetus so it requested that you get another verse to prove abortion is a sin. Any verse?
      -------------
YOUR CLAIM: Abortion STOPS a process that Almighty God Himself STARTED as a Christian I'm not going to put my stamp of approval on that. Why would you?
MY RESPONSE: Wrong. Didn't fornication and adultery start the process that resulted in abortion? Many do NOT WANT to legislate fornication and adultery (7th commandment) which are the root causes of abortion and yet want to legislate a medical procedure that isn't banned by the 10 commandments. Abortion is not mentioned in the Bible. In fact there are more scriptures that support abortion than against it. For example, in Numbers 5:11-31 a fetus is expelled as a punishment for an unfaithful wife (without consideration for the fetus) and in Exodus 21:22 the fetus is not viewed as having the same value as a human being (harm to the fetus is compensated with a payment as compared to the mother it is life for life, hand for hand,...).

Truly you are just trying to convince yourself and want others to validate something that scripturally, is completely evil and wrong.

Your sentence doesn’t make sense! Who are you thanking if you don’t believe in God? I see you are just rage bating. I will pray for you. God bless.

Looking forward to this mousey lady’s permanently concerned face to become more concerned after trump wins.
The absolute smugness of the npr crowd must be snuffed out.

Donald Trump is perfect. He is exactly what America needs at this time in our history.
The biggest question I have for him is why would he want the job at this point? Is America too far gone that he won’t be able to change its course?

Perfect? Why would he want the job? Honestly, why would anyone want the job? Dealing with all these people has to be one of the worst jobs you can have, but he wants it for the same reason people want any type of position. Power and Fame. I'm really hoping this is a sarcastic comment
