  • This TeamUSA slection Competition for SkillsUSA, was held at Alabama Robotics Technology Park in Huntsville Alabama.
    Each year, students from local high school and post-secondary welding programs compete in SkillsUSA competitions. A series of local, district, and state-wide contests decide which two students will represent their state at the national level. Each participating state sends its high school and post-secondary champion to the national SkillsUSA Championships held in Louisville each June.
    Every two years, the American Welding Society invites the top 48 welding competitors from the National SkillsUSA Championships (24 from each year) to compete in the four-stage Team USA Welder Selection: the Invitational Pre-Trials, Invitational Weld Trials, Finalist Tune-up, and The Final Weld Off. This competition decides which welder will represent the United States at the WorldSkills Competition being held in Abu Dhabi, October 14-19, 2017.
    Competitors receive contest drawings and a set of welding procedure specifications. All drawings, welding symbols, and welding terms conform to the latest edition of the American Welding Society standards. Through a series of stations, contestants are tested on various aspects of welding: measuring weld replicas, using weld measuring gauges; laying out a plate and using oxy-acetylene equipment to cut several holes that are checked for accuracy and quality; Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) on steel making welds in various positions using short circuiting transfers; Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) using a shielding gas, making welds in various positions and, using a combination machine capable of providing the correct welding current for shielded metal arc (SMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). Competitors complete the steel project and weld an aluminum project in various positions using a variety of filler metals.

    Well, at 70 years old I think it may be a little to late for me to check the bucket of becoming a welder after doing IT for the balance of my life. To late for me to be an apprentice but I do admire these young men & their skill.

    That's awesome you have high schools that have the ability and skills to do this. My high school weld shop teacher couldn't weld pipe to save his life. I think all he knew how to use was a squirt gun.

    I got 7th place for aluminum tig in the state of California it was ok I enjoyed the trip more then the actual competition I went in for stainless but they didn’t have it preparation so we just did aluminum then they didn’t have the right rod I studied the lame 100question written test till I remembered every answer and then we didn’t even do the test. However I bonded real close with the guys I competed with and are still some of my closest friends.

    I took some welding courses when I was a junior in high school through my community college just to learn for hobbies. Boy was I glad I took it, it was a very fun class. I'm an awesome mig welder, but I never learned how to tig. Hopefully I'll learn this year.
    The issue is that in my high school, skillsUSA was a joke class/club so I never participated.

    I have to say something here. All I will say is that I was a competitor. My welds are still on display now. I think this is good for students to get better, but it's not realistic. Also I think it is dangerous for these guys to come out actually thinking they are the best in the world. It simply isn't true. For example the guy that I defeated to go on to the national competition is a better welder than any one in this video, including Ray, Nick and Brandon (before you ask yes I've seen every one of there projects). I know at least 10 guys of the top of my head who are the same age that are better than these guys. It's not healthy to think there the best. These guys are still wet behind the ears and have alot to learn. I don't want to be negative. Can any one of the competitors tell me what the property procedure for welding Alloy 800 on a 6G 2in boiler tube weld test is? The welds used are not what is done in real life industry. Nobody puts 7018 root passes in across America. Just my 2 cents on this subject.

      Ol Sage Orange Peels Alloy 800H/800HT® (UNS N08810 & N08811 / W.Nr. 1.4958 & 1.4959) are solid solution strengthened, iron- nickel-chromium alloys, typically offered as one, dual certified alloy meeting the elemental requirements of both alloys. The principle difference between alloy 800H and 800HT® material is the restricted aluminum and titanium content in 800HT®, which results in higher creep and stress rupture properties. Both Alloy 800H and 800HT® are superior to Alloy 800 (UNS N08800), having greater creep and stress rupture properties. The alloy is typically used for applications involving long-term exposure to high-temperatures where resistance is needed from oxidation, carburization and other types of high-temperature corrosion. Hydrocarbon processing, heat-treat furnaces and power generation are some of the most common applications where 800H & 800HT® is utilized. Pressure vessels and vessel components constructed from 800H and 800HT® are approved under the ASME,
      Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section
      VIII, Division 1.
      Resistance to Corrosion
      High nickel and chromium contents in both alloy 800H and 800HT® result in excellent resistance to oxidation, carburization and sulfidation. The high nickel content also increases the resistance to nitriding, although not as good as other alloys such as Alloy 600, which contains a higher percentage of nickel.
      Fabrication and Heat Treatment
      Hot-working temperatures should be between 1600°F and 2200°F with heavy forming to be performed at temperatures above 1850°F. No forming should be performed between 1200°F and 1600°F and preheating of tools and dies to 500°F is suggested to avoid chill. Cooling after hot working should be as quick as possible, avoiding extensive time at temperatures between 1000°F and 1400°F. Cold working should be performed on material in the annealed condition. Stress relief or annealing should be considered depending on the total amount of strain induced by fabrication taking into consideration the intended service of the material.

      To say these kids are going to be pulling 80k with no real world experience is a bit silly, there is huge entry level glut in the welding industry (partly created by these programs) turnover is extremely high (which drives the experienced welder shortage) They would make more money inspecting. My cousin had been welding pipeline for 6 years and makes 50-55k a year, with pervious experience. He could make more on an oil rig but he doesn't want to be in the ocean. The average welder makes like 30k entry level with certs.

    • @jockellis
      @jockellis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Blow Working 12 hours a day seven days a week for as much time as they want to? They should, according to my teacher who is a union welder.

    • @JoeBlow-24
      @JoeBlow-24 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The numbers are a simple google search away. Underwater welding, military welders, industrial pipe welding, middle east pipe liners, can all make 6 figures. All of which need extensive experience and certs. My point remains, those kids have zero experience and so your claim of 80k a year is silly (46 hours a week in overtime is what it would take to get 80k a year for a newbie making 14.00$ hourly) its neither here nor there, the real world numbers are 30ish K a year for your average entry level welder.

    • @jockellis
      @jockellis 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      88 : Are you a union welder or steelworker. Sure, these guys will start as helpers but they are the cream of the crop and will have an easy time getting in. Unless they just want to they won’t be working at a muffler shop for $14 an hour. At the GE machine shop where I worked a Vietnamese guy making $20 an hour and change made over $100,000 one very busy year. He was very, very skilled at polishing gas turbine blades and was in charge of his shift so was putting in 72 hours a week.

    These bullshit shows. Ive been welding since I was 5.
    If you want to find the worlds best welder then your looking for someone who can succesfully join two rusted pieces of farm equipment with little to no amps on a windy day pissin down rain on a cattle yard.
    Or maybe those guys who risk their balls lighting the water up under the guts of some bleeding ukrainian vessel bobbin around in shark infested waters tryin to seal up a hull crack.
    No. The worlds best welder walks in with a suit n tie with a frappachino weldin behind flash curtains in a nice clean shed that you could eat off the floor.
    There is no such thing as the worlds best anything, but I wouldnt be sayin that to iron mike...
