Something interesting is that Padparacha, despite having delayed vision- is able to do something that people dont seem to notice. She can point out how people feel in the moment. Garnet didnt realize she made the refugees uncomfortable until Padparacha pointed it out. She can point out details that others may have missed because the vision lets her see these small things. Even if she isn't predicting the future. But looking at the past moments with more clarity than anyone.

Steven always had the gems there in a controlled environment to help him cope and adapt. After a certain point he must've grown into a health hazard to Greg before he could even be aware of the concept of self control. Adding that element to other humans especially toddlers unsupervised for prolonged periods of time could've resulted in the unintentional deaths of so many people. That's just considering the basic abilities he manifested. He would've had a body count by the time the series starts if he grew up in what is considered a "traditional" environment. Later when Steven expressed how his upbringing was part of his problem and how he lamented not growing up in a "normal" household. Greg and everyone really dropped the ball not having the conversation that growing up he was a legitimate health hazard instead of treating it like a known issue that just fixed itself. Throughout the series you see the world ending threats the gems invading were. Steven had the power to bring an entire intergalactic empire to its knees. There's no one in the universe who could stop him. Give that potential an environment directing that growth in specific ways or prematurely expose them to complex emotions and feelings that could skew a child's development and you risk an Akira situation in 6th grade. Say what you will about a nonstandard upbringing but Steven needed his upbringing to be fundamentally different so he could reconcile his gem and human nature growing up. Puberty almost destroyed beach city, like one bad year in school and he might've started up the kindergartens again.

While my relationship with it have been rocky and I'm mixed on its effects on both the cartoon community and the industry in general, I still respect that it came out and did what a lot of other shows couldn't do at the time.

I think one of my least favorite lost plot points is it really seemed like they were leading up to Pearl being whites Pearl, her colors are mostly white and she has matching gem placements. All the other pearls are their diamonds color and have matching gem placement and I would have liked to see that plot.
I assumed that Pearl was originally White Diamond's Pearl but then got handed down to Pink Diamond. Especially with what was revealed in SU Future with Pink having a Pearl she abused BEFORE "our" Pearl entered Pink's life.
i think the idea is that white saw pink pearl couldn't handle rose and created the next pearl in her own image (plus input from the other diamonds) to be more responsible, which is why pearl's og outfit contains multiple colours rather than just one
I really don't think the show was something building towards that. The theories I saw at the time were more about Pearl being a "Default Pearl" because she had the colors of all the diamonds in her clothes, I never thought of her as white diamond Pearl. I think it's more interesting the story we got, Pearl being a "default pearl" given to Pink after she damaged her original pearl. In fact, what I find most interesting is knowing why White kept Pink Pearl as her own when she really didn't need her.

Garnet had the hope low but eventually that hope thankfully returned to try, to have hope, to have dreams, to have power to make change even if it is minor. Like I really think a lot of people dislike Steven universe not for what the show is, but because we saw for 20 minutes what the show could have been

I feel like the point of the hug wasn’t to fix all his problems with it. It was mostly them realizing they need to do better in helping steven, and showing him they were there for him. He needed to get out of beach city, that was part of him becoming human
The gems can’t completely understand what steven is going through, him being half gem half human so they’re, frankly, can’t fully help him
