Ilya Sorokin's future with the Islanders is getting strange to say the least... What are YOUR thoughts on Sorokin's game this year? Do YOU think the Islanders should trade him? Let me know #GravGang!!
Honestly. Every goalie has their weakness. Maybe provide def to cover that weakness. As a Detroit fan I’ve noticed Lyon is slow side to side. If Detroit limits 2 on 1 chances he would have a higher save percentage
Play behind a team with the worst defense in the league, on top of the worst penalty kill in the sport as well as facing nearly 40 shots per game and still have what is considered league average save% for most goalies in the league and say there is a sorokin problem. Change the title to the islanders are shit at defense problem, and you'd be more accurate. Every year he's been in the league he had over a 92 save% outside of this year, I think he'll be just fine as long as the team don't leave him high and dry.
@@michaelkane5042 it was .908 this year. With a bad def. Maybe a bit low by his standards but I bet over a 10 year average it would barely stand out. People freaking out for no reason.
This is a 14 minute video that demonstrates Graviteh's inability to scout goalies. Every single clip shown outside of the playoff game clips can easily be explained away with either really poor defensive play from the Islanders (such as Nic Paul being left open, or two Vegas players being open for a rebound because the Islanders forward didn't backcheck to cover for the odd man rush), legit quality goals (Jack Eichel's snipe that's so fast that the slowmo couldn't capture the puck until it was in the net), or even goals that should've been called back such as the Pen's player who was in Soro's crease the whole time and snowing him in the face. Let alone the two points on the "How to Score on Sorokin 101" slide being applicable to EVERY GOALIE. Every coach says get bodies in front of the net, every coach says get pucks on net, why? Because it's HOW you beat a goalie you don't have a book on. Take away a goalie's sight and catch him off guard? Greater chance of a shot going in. Legit the only "failures" in Sorokin's game is that he can't fix the Islander's awful defensive play or stop literally everything regardless of situation.
@@shawndibiase He was also playing on one of the worst defensive teams this year, and given the much heavier workload as well. The guy's had a bad season for sure, but to say he's "not good" despite two very successful seasons prior where he was over .920% is just straight up false.
@@shawndibiase he was the vezina runner up last year, he’s not the only goalie in the league who gives up rebounds, just clear or tie up players the front of the net ffs, this is more so exposed how shit the islanders are
Why is this a Sorokin problem? Put bodies in front of most goalies and they are going to give up rebounds if they cannot track the puck in traffic. A goalie can get in position and anticipate, but they can't see what they can't see. Maybe its the Islanders defense not shutting down shooting lanes allowing the puck to get through all of those bodies that is the problem. Maybe it is relying to much on blocking shots and not on controlling the puck on the opponents side of the ice. Maybe the best defense is a better offense. One last thing, why do so many people pronounce Zibanejad as Zabinijad? That's not his name.
Listen. I am a Ranger fan and absolutely HATE the asslanders. But this is not a good take. Yes he had a bad game, but lets face it. The asslanders don't really play solid defense either. Too many easy neutral zone entries, too many defensive chases, forwards lazy in the defensive zone, & not very physical in front of the net. I hope they trade him cause he deserves better...
Canes fan and I agree , Same happened early in the year in Carolina like dudes would bail defensively and go for a hot dog and beer and leave guys open or all alone and all you heard was tHe GoAliE sUcKs go makes a trade , Its a crazy thought process .
Isles fan here. Wanted to thank you both for recognizing this crap take. Illya has been hung out to dry most the the season then varly went down for illya was hung out again with no relief in sight. The guys just burnt out. A solid off season or rest, maybe some sports psychologist sessions and a better defensive effort and I think he’ll be back to form next season.
He didn’t struggle nor did teams figure him out…he was overworked because his teammates failed him. In a 13 game start span he faced an average of 38.9 shots. He faced more shots than anyone in the NHL…you would have to be high to think he should be getting shutouts left and right. He didn’t lose us games, he’s the reason we made the playoffs for his big time saves early this season. Also his rebound control has been his known issue since he came into the league
Sorokin hasn’t been the same since Trotz left. Trotz had the defensive playing in beast mode. Now it’s erratic and he’s facing sometimes 40 shots a game and can’t clear the Puck to save there lives.
Another indictment on the Lane Lambert regime. When Lambert was still coaching, he was facing on average 40 shots a game. That really started to take a toll on his game and he's been mentally broken since January. Why it took so long for them to hand the reigns to Varlamov and let Ilya mentally reset is beyond me.
Bad take, watched a lot of the islanders and you can’t blame the goalie for atrocious defense and facing a ton of high quality scoring opportunities each game
After watching Sorokin for years, his biggest problem is his rebound control. He lets some softies in, but if he doesn’t get the rebounds under control he will crumble. He needs to work with a coach 24/7 over the summer entirely on his rebounds.
I'm a Canes fan and he only gave up 3 goals before he got pulled. There were some defensive lapses that left him stranded. Find it crazy he got pulled that quickly but those first 2 goals weren't entirely on him.
Just like earlier in the year with us I don't understand this blaming the goalies incredibly pi*ss poor defensive breakdowns , Like if you let dudes shoot from prime areas you're gonna get rung up in this league . People act like its the Allsvenskan and not the NHL lol .
Yeah the 2nd goal literally hit the defenders back when he bent down in front which deflected it upwards into the top of the net over Sorokins shoulder. I’m also a Canes fan, I thought it was puck luck for us.
@alexrogers9051 first goal deflected off a defender as well. He probably should have had the Aho shot but that's the only one I'd fault him with. His decline is more of an indictment on the team in front of him in my opinion.
It goes to show you how much coaching scheme and team defense can impact goaltending as well. Trotz vs Lambert/Roy is a very different style which changes the types of saves a goalie has to make and what kind of rhythm they get into.
So the things that all teams use to score against good goalies work against Sorokin as well? Save percentage was low across the league this year and .909 is above league average, no? This, to me, looks more like the Islanders are worse defensively in front of Sorokin than in the past. They're unable to move opposing players out of Sorokin's sight line or tie up opponents from potting rebounds.
You just never can tell with goalies. A couple of years ago, I drafted a goalie tandem of Andrei Vasilevsky and Jusse Saros, thinking I'd be set for years. They're respectively a .900 (24th) and .906 (16th) this year in SV% (among goalies playing 41+ games). I'm glad I drafted Jordan Binnington “just for fun” this year!
Why would we trade a great goalie. Every goalie has an off year. Reason is because when lane lambert was our coach, he basically never gave him a rest. He was burned out.
So how to score on Sorokin is how to score on any goalie at any level. Great to know! Let’s actually talk about the real problems, like the Islanders defense before we blame Sorokin. If the defenders did their jobs he would have been just as good as he was last year. Islanders defense last year was 10x better than it was this year. Let’s watch the team we are talking about before blaming it on the goalie.
He's definitely having an off year but I feel like this is typical for goalies. He has one of the best coaches in the league to address and help him improve his issues. Hopefully he'll get a very detailed training regimen for the summer, go home for a few weeks, don't think about hockey, come back to US and train, train, train. Don't stay in Russia where there's distractions with friends, family, war, etc.
The Sorokin problem in my eyes, is the apparent rift between him & Roy. I love both Sorokin & Roy, but it feels like they might trade Sorokin for much needed offense. Varly has 3 more years left on his contract & is clearly Roy's guy between the two. Just my 2 cent6
A lot of your examples are team defense issues as well, could Sorokin play better, yes, could the isle defenders help out around the net, also yes. Igor is great but the rangers defenders are often in position to clear the rebound from the front of the net
Sorokin gives up a lot of rebounds and that definitely contributes a lot to his troubles. In saying that the Isles defense is atrocious and I think that's more of the issue here
This sounds like Korpisalo except he doesn't even need a screen in front of him for the shooter to score with a wrister from above the circles. Although saying this Sorokin has a proven track record Korpi doesn't
the biggest problem is how he acted after he got pulled from game he sat in the tunnel and sulked. for the last years varlamov has been his mentor and biggest supporter all while he was losing his number 1 job to him. he should of been on bench supporting varly and the rest of his team. last night was not a good look for him
Ranger fan here, but I'll defend Sorokin ... Islanders aren't that good, and he's hit a bump in the road. Hey, Shesterkin was at the All-Star game (more than half the season) with a .899 save percentage, but after a good couple of weeks with Benoit Allaire he was reset going .930 the rest of the way.
It’s just a down year for him, it’s tough to dominate every year plus the islanders are actively just a bad team they work hard but they’re not good, he’ll Bounce back next year. Idk who is saying trade him but it’s not like they can rebuild anyway
Sorokin being league average... obviously not having his best season, but that being said look at the team in front of him... he's got the game in him to become freddy Anderson or better...
Sorry but it’s 100% the fatigue not just this year but several. He’s not exposed lol he’s just off. Lambert couldn’t coach for shit Patrick Roy plays a different system entirely. 1st goal burns was deflected by the way. 2nd goal screened by his own player could’ve saved it 3rd one definitely on him
No teams have figured him out or game plan against him. This is a horrendous take. Guy just is struggling and off his typical game where he’s solid on his posts and is able to get side to side quickly. He’s positioning has been off. This is just incredibly dumb. All goalies go through rough stretches. This video is so unnecessary for that reason. You saved yourself at the end but you basically told me why this isn’t something to make a video about. Igor, Helly, Demko their humans
Sorokin is going through the funk. Al goalies go through it Lundqvist went through it every November or so, Shestyorkin went through it in the first half of the season. I think every goalie gets figured out after a while, but it all depends on how goalies adapt. If their coach can help them work on it.
