One of the beautiful things about Stan's writing in "Just Imagine," is that he DOES leave it open ended, he leaves Wayne with a flawed character and doesn't wrap everything up in a nice bow. The early marvels always left you wanting to read the next issue, there was never a clean out point. Even though Stan probably figured he'd never go back to these characters again, he left them with a place to explore, maybe if DC wanted to use them more in the future, or maybe because that is just how he writes.

After Wally Wood left the series, they tried to make Daredevil into "Marvel's Batman." Although it didn't work. Daredevil was one those characters that passed through several different creators who really didn't know what to do with him. It took Frank Miller to finally realize Daredevil's potential.

The most interesting thing to me about this take on Batman is that it very much feels like it is written as a pilot rather than a one--shot. Plenty of room is left for character development and future interactions with the supporting cast. It feels like Stan had launched so many series by this point that this was his unconscious style. I wonder whether the other books in this series read more like "First Issue Spectacular" than one-off homages or reimaginings.

I agree that this doesn´t seem like another version of Batman. Not from an Elseworld story. That being said, the comic is titled Just Imagine Stan Lee Creating the DC Universe. So, in that sense, he can do whatever he wanted as long as there were just enough references to the character being Batman.

If I recall, this wasn't a collaboration with Marvel, what happened was when Bill "Comics Should be More Like Baseball" Jemas was made president, he found the yearly stipend Lee was getting just because he's Stan Lee to be a waste of money and cut it. This was actually tied to him being exclusive to Marvel, so, being just about the most famous guy in comics and a free agent, he started fielding a lot of offers. He brought that divorced mom energy to DC, which even made Rolling Stone's annual Hot List issue as "Hot Defection".

You never find anyone saying anything good about him. It is a sequence of stories of screwing people over or just being an ass for no reason.

Unfortunately, Kane and Finger were trying to come up with a follow up character to Superman and did so before really thinking out the rationale for the costume. It still is based on the circus strongman tights and trunks idea, plus a cape. The whole terrifying bit was fleshed out later as a concept, but the costume was already done. Stan actually starts with the concept and comes up with a costume that's fitting. I think it should have been colored differently though. They've made some great costumes for the movie adaptations, but they're still just Batman costumes, some more practical than others, but none that are terrifying.

Having that fight with Handz be on the balcony so he could end up going over the edge was a bit handy, wasn't it? I'll get my coat.
I read all of these when they came out, and let's just say I found the writing a bit dated. Although the Wonder Woman and Flash versions were both rather appealing characters. And the backup story in the Green Lantern one - a police detective wondering if there is still a place for people like him in a superpowered world, and getting an answer he didn't expect - was utterly brilliant. Because it's heart was totally in the right place.
But watching this, it comes over as being stronger than I remembered. I would have read a series. Because it would have said Batman on the cover. Gotta have my Bat books, man!

Colour with a U is my favourite way to write colour tho with my learning disability these were definitely hard words to learn to pronounce right as I would say them like Hour or Our. "Honey, put down the crayons; it's time for dinner." "1 zecond, mommy, I need to callower this t-rex in fah-urst." 🤣

Great video! The realistic bat mask reminds me a lot of the one worn by the eponymous villain from the 1926 movie 'The Bat', which itself was one of the many inspirations that Bob Kane and Bill Finger drew from when they created Batman.

Not sure if you toutched the comics with Dark Claw yet. That weird DC Marvel mashup universe where Batman and Wolverine is combinded as Dark Claw but also Bruce Wayne and Nick Fury combined are also a thing.

I feel the greatest strenght of this story is the imagery, the way it uses the symbols is great, but, yeah, the writing itself isn't that good (even if Williams saved people, his actions seem more selfish than anything) and it's clear Nita is just there to be the designated (probable) love interest.

Let's be honest it was just a one shot and in Batman's first story he wasn't that complex. This works as a first issue (keeping in mind who wrote it and when.). It doesn't stink the place up and has room to improve and grow. I liked it because it had an El Santo movie vibe about it more than an Arnold film vibe. Like you said maybe this is how Stan Lee sees Batman. Some of the comic feels as if they edited stuff out but didn't fix the hole(s) it created a la Nita. Great work as always.

Surprised that the most obvious inspiration doesn't get brought up: Ted Grant/Wildcat. Ted is also a fighter in a realistic fur suit who also fights crime, has a more hard boiled attitude and his origin also involves losing his loved ones and being framed for a crime he wasn't involved in.

Stan Lee writing for DC. I distinctly remember when this was announced. I never did pick any of the books up but only because back then I never bought comics at all. I use to just read wikis on characters I liked. It was a habit carried over from when I was a kid and rarely had money so I use to follow story archs in the occasional Wizard price guide magazine. (even when I started working it just didn't occur to me just go out and buy books as they were happening for a long time)
Still. Hardly ever hear about these books anymore. Since it happened, I've only seen one other video on it earlier this year.

They even had there own COIE event.

Great video. I have a suggestion for a future topic based upon Sasha's comments roughly between the 13:06 - 13:25 point of this video. I have seen old pictures of Batman pointing a gun at gangster's heads and all but assuring them that either they'd open the safe or he' d open their head--that kind of thing our long-held tradition of Batman would never do .even as a bluff then---how he disdains the guns he is otherwise by necessity of trade a trained expert on--alla the classic foreshadowing on Jason Todd when he discovers Batman's armory of every advanced gun in the world--and how Batman explicitly states his creed about them--and killing in anyway--but the idea is its a 'seed" of fascination toward the ultimate fate of Red Hood.

I like the idea behind this version of Batman and some of the executed elements. I love the more realistic costume when it's framed in a more gothic/dramatic light. When Williams is just walking around the costume looks really silly. I would've loved to read more of Lee's Batman. My only gripe is that I think the more the series would've gone on the less it would feel like "Batman" and instead become more of an original character.

    • @PosthumanHeresy
      @PosthumanHeresy ปีที่แล้ว +1

I like that it looks silly in the proper context. That actually applies to Bruce as well. We all have a scene in mind where Batman was forced into a situation while dressed as Batman that a man dressed as Batman does not belong in. Batmarriage. Batfuneral. Batceremony. Batdance. Batparty. Batbabysitting. Batdad. Batauction. Batman in places he doesn't belong is pretty much a canon meme. But it fits his character because he wants to strike fear in the hearts of evil. When he's Batmanning, he's going to make them wish they brought their brown pants. But if he, say, needs to comfort a kid, he can turn into a mascot instantly. He's famous _as_ a mascot. Imagine if when you were a kid you were kidnapped and The Undertaker burst in with full Undertaker theatrics and somehow did the rise from the dead thing after being shot, beat all the kidnappers, and saved you. Yeah, the crooks would be _terrified_ but you the child would be very comforted by this. Now imagine Taker eating a burger. Hilarious, because he's The Undertaker. Same concept as this Batsuit. This is what makes the comedy of the suit work: it serves as half of what preserves his ability to hypothetically comfort a crying child. That's important for Batman.
