Josh, when I built my home I installed a 20,000 watt, whole-house generator. There is about a five second delay between loosing power and generator startup. We go to warmer parts for the winter and it gives peace of mind knowing our home will be fine. The generator uses natural gas but could be powered by propane if necessary.
I had a whole home generator installed (Generac) since we have Natural Gas, we needed to have a 3/4” gas supply line installed by the gas company (replacing the old 1/2” line). Works great. Kicks on automatically.
A whole house standby Generac with natural gas, and/or a 1,000 gallon propane tank is the way to go, even with a 500 gallon propane pig. Hauling and storing gasoline is not the way to go.

In 2008 I bought a small generator. A week after I had the transfer switch installed a powerful Nor'easter came through and dumped 4 feet of snow. It took the power out for 4 days. It saved my house from major damage from frozen pipes etc. Well 15 years later I still have it. Once a month I start it and run the house on it for a short time. I can't tell you how many times it has saved me. I have a philosophy about owning a generator. It's similar to having health insurance. It's there if you need it. If you don't have it and need it then your shit out of luck.

In 1998, I got my Generac XL 5500. This was to be ready for 2000. I used to run it once a month, but that got to be a pain in the butt. So I read the manual and placed it into long term storage mode. Change the oil&filter, run it out of gas, place an little oil in the cylinder and pull the handle a cycle until the valves close, then put the plug back in. It sat there for several years until the first big outage. Then it started on one pull and ran the house for a few days. Then, it goes back into storage mode. Now I only fire it up once a year and run some vacuums to make sure the windings work, but the rest of the year it stays in storage mode. It gets an emergency work out about every 5 years, and still starts on the first pull. It is the best maintained motor at our house.
Wish I had a Northern Tool near me. Nice generator as I too am in the market for one but with pure sine wave technology to power all my sensitive electronics.

we got the 13000 kw 8 years ago fom them.. we powered our shop and when the power would go out we back feed the house as well. worked great for years. now we have a gas powered 32,000 kw back up for everything. we built a fancy house over ours on one of there 4 wheel pull trailors. A idea..
I was able to pick up a Generator for the house this summer. When we had the house built, had the electricians install a hook up for a generator, will be able to run the essentials plus!
We changed houses last year and this spring I built an outbuilding. For the outbuilding, I ran 10-4 power in both directions under ground. For normal times 240V/30 amp can be sent to the building, and in an emergency 240V/30 amps can be sent to the house and run through a transfer switch. It was twice the amount of cable, but it gives a lot of options.
The last house I had an interlock and 50 feet of 10- 4 rubber tool cable to get from the outbuilding to the house. It was always raining, or snowing when plugging it into the house and generator. I did not think about 2 cables when I did the last house. This time, It will be better with 2 underground cables and hopefully I will get a 50 amp, 10 position manual transfer switch for Christmas(my wife needed an idea). If everything works out, I will be able to set it up with an option for an inline whole house UPS system. And like the last house, there will be a protocol to follow for the rest of the family if I am not home when it is needed. @@jtc1947

You should do a video of a transfer switch installation so the generator can be connected directly to your house. A very valuable feature would be the ability to run the unit on propane.
Since this is for emergencies, after putting in the transfer switch, how much gas will you be storing for this unit. 12 gal for 10 hours run time for 6000W. So for each day, if you run it all day, you will need 27 gallons of fuel, and 100 Gal may last 4 days. Then, you have to rotate your emergency fuel every 6 months, if you do not run propane. Since the tractor is diesel, did you consider a PTO Generator, or a diesel generator for backup power?
Yes pto generator is an excellent option. I have a 2210 tractor w/ pto generator have had in 04 & 09 ran it for 24/7/3days rest of emergency’s only 4/12 hrs

Hey Josh! After seeing your generator, I ran by Northern Tool & Equipment to research a similar genny to handle our house. We currently have a 7.5kW pull-start Ryobi that connects via big cable to a subpanel that runs the circuits powering heat, well, freezer, fridges, and kit/LR/master BR. However, we put a heat pump to replace the main AC and configured our heat as electric above 35F and LP below. So we need to get HVAC and electrician to add the heat pump to the generator subpanel, and to advise how big the generator needs to be. I expect the little brother to yours, at about 10kW, would be good. Then the little missus could start it. I really like the fuel/oil/filter life indicators. Thanks for showing the tool!
Was a service advisor for Dodge. I've had customers vehicles awaiting parts longer than that. I felt bad for the guy. Brand new truck, he only had it two months. I had it four.
In the past I sold similar products. Northstar has a good reputation. Our personal generator has a 4,000 watt capacity. So that’s fridge, freezer, etc. And, it’s not quiet. I give you high marks for your generator selection.
Well pump....HVAC that's what keeps your pipes from freezing my friend. Fridge, freezer doesn't draw much but hot water, HVAC and well pump is what we're really after to keep us from having to spend the $$$ to repair everything that breaks when frozen

Do you have a transfer switch installed that allows you to run both the shop and the house? Also, there are several TH-cam videos on building a generator enclosure that has ventilation for exhaust and keeping the gen cool.

Nice generator.... make a Faraday cage around it tbough... or could be worthless. ALSO, buy a back-up 6-8k Dual Fuel as a backup, like Diesel Propane, or gas/propane if this one is diesel
Josh that is one heck of a portable generator, I love all the features. My favorite would be the carbon monoxide detector! When Monique and I had our house built the only thing I wanted was a standby generator! After hurricane Sandy hit Long Island, I would never want to go without power like that again.

You did the right thing! A portable gasoline generator is the way to go IMO. Natural gas standby is dependent on things beyond your control. Propane is WAAAYYY too expensive to run for long periods.
You mean that propane does not need to be rotated every 6 months like stabilized gas. Also in an emergency, cost becomes irrelevant when you need to stay warm in the winter while keeping the fridge and freezers cold. It is all temporary and usually never more than a week. @@Ragecon87
Gasoline under Bidenomics is very expensive now, and will be hard to get in time, and certainly under a massive power outage or EMP. , and will only get worse. Propane is only $1.59. Plenty of propane and natural gas.
@@Ragecon87 Propane is substantially less energy dense. Then you have the expense of tanks or a giant tank on the property subject to being dependent on the propane company coming to refill. Trust me, I know. I have lived through countless hurricanes.
My 16KW Generac Standby under a full load is only 1.5 to 2 gallons of clean power per hour. Under a half load about 1 gallon of propane, and I use a lot of power. Propane stores nicely and doesn't go bad. 1,000 gallons would last me for about a month. Storing propane is compact, unlike gasoline. Propane is safer. Good luck with gasoline if you can get it.
Looks like a great generator...almost bought a smaller different brand generator on cyber-Monday but ran into a comment about THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). Apparently, generators that produce "dirty" electricity Arnt safe to use with sensitive electronics ...i e systems in newer homes... couldn't load the link for this generator but Norther tool did claim all of its generators produce under 6% THD. Is this something you looked for when buying or is it mentioned anywhere? Sounds like what you're running wouldn't have sensitive electronics anyways but just curious that is a nice size. Thanks!

Right, everyone says "Just like a Honda". LOL I use only non-Ethanol fuel in my Honda EU7000. Using non-corn juice in these is the best thing you can do to ensure reliability. I also noticed there is no pull-start backup on the Northern unit. Probably because no one would have the strength to pull the cord anyway. Keep a jump box handy.

Only time will tell. Every time someone comes out with something brand new it's suddenly "Better than Honda". I'm not saying Honda is flawless, but their reputation was built over time. Will it start in minus temperatures? Will it continue to run when it's over 100 degrees? I mean, everything works great right out of the box. Time is the only judge of reliability and dependability. It definitely looks like a nice unit power-wise and feature-wise but keep in mind all those fancy whistles and bells can fail and I doubt you'll have much luck with replacement parts. Let's circle back in 10 years and see how it's doing. Again, I hope it does well.

Warning - with EFI generator (from COSTCO) it will not start without battery (EMERGENCY pull start does not work). you better make sure you have a working battery for emergencies!
Generally batteries don't completely die, they may not have power to start the generator, but can sustain it while it's running. Much like when your car clicks when the battery is dead, some power just not enough
@@matt45540 NOT the case based on experience it would NOT run with old battery when doing pull start. As soon as new battery installed, it worked fine.

We are thinking of buying a new car. Some hybrid cars allow power out and to use the car’s engine to charge the battery. We are looking at the Mitsubishi Outlander which has this feature. It could be a way to power a few important appliances like a fridge or freezer if there is a blackout. Of course if the car needs to be driven the appliances no longer have power.
I personally woulda gone with. 20+kwh generac uses propane/ natural gas’s which is super efficient and has the sense to auto start when loss of power is detected
When I looked at the price of the Northstar generator, it is $4300. I did not think that it would be that expensive. For another $300, you can get the 14 kw Generac with the whole house transfer switch.

Hybrid Solar with generator backup. Start with minimal battery backup and increase when you can afford. In the long run electricity will rise in price as reliable generator( nuclear/coal);are shut down and partly replaced by erratic renewable wind solar and hydro

I don't think I'd be toting it around the farm, those type electronics are somewhat fragilly. If you need a gen, say out in the field to repair a piece of equipment, I'd just get a bobcat welder/generator to power up the the tools needed to get something ready to weld, and then weld it and be done. When they compare themselves to Honda, it just tells me they aren't quiet as good. True it has no carb to gum up, but, injectors gum up too. Fuel tanks also gum up. Esp when they sit for long periods, so, at least once a month start up and run is imperative. I know it's costly, but I'd run ethanol free fuel. Since you live a good ways away from the shop(as of now anyway) You should get yourself one of those alarms like they use on chicken houses that give off a loud alarm to let you know the power is out. Since it doesn't seem this doesn't have an auto start. I think in the future, I get something like the Generac whole home gen with auto start. Then, a trip for a few days out of town will give you more piece of mind. A propane system at that, so it will be worry free in case of something big (think of what happened when Hugo came through or, the blizzard of '93.) I know you probably got it for free or at least a good deal since they sponsor you, but, free isn't always better. One question though, I see the need to have power run into it to keep the battery up to snuff, but surely it charges it's own battery when running, right?
So where's the new technology? Honda came out with their EFI generator (EU7000) 10 years ago and it's an Inverter unit to boot. So I would hardly call this unit new technology. I love how the salesman throws around the "similar to Honda" statements. Right.. they are all similar to Honda until something needs repaired and then you discover there are very limited parts for these Chinese wonders. I'm not surprised Northern doesn't list the noise level of that thing, it is LOUD. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with it.

Can you adjust the line frequency to 62hz? I don't see the manual online. I ask because if you use this (or any other non-inverter generator) in conjunction with a Solar system, the generator should idle at 62hz and droop to 60hz under load. The reason is that 62hz will cause the solar system to curtail power generation so it doesn't back feed and potentially harm the generator. You should never run an inverter type generator in parallel with a solar system because the inverter generators ALWAYS make 60hz. Again, to be clear.... 62 hz means "solar don't make any/much power" and 60hz means "solar and generator need to make all the power they can". Hope this makes sense.
Hey Josh, that's a cool generator with EFI and electronic starting plus it's pretty compact. I was thinking since you already have a couple of tractors, You could probably later on get a PTO generator, that thing would probably power 90% of everything you have and be pretty good on fuel consumption. I bought a new Winco 15kw PTO generator and it's safe for sensitive equipment with less than 5% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) about 5 years ago and it only requires 30 pto hp at max output. I have an old 1968 MF135 diesel tractor and it pulls it like nothing and only uses about 1 gph of fuel under full load. Even if you could get a bigger generator and had a small tractor, it can still be utilized and be used at what ever the tractor could put out at max output. I guess I'm thinking about how other people have done things in the past and was something that I have followed that works good on the farm when the power goes out. Keep up the cool videos👍
Wait until the under dash clik clik clik kicks in. I think in the very short term a gen set is ok. After superstorm sandy having had no power for 6 months you find out real quick its not feasible to keep a gen running to keep food.
Sandy was indeed bad. You can only keep so much gasoline on-hand, even non-Ethanol. The key in a long-term emergency when fuel is scarce is to not run the generator 24/7. Only run it the absolute minimum to keep your food fresh or provide heat. Still, the clock is always ticking. The other important thing is to TEST THE SYSTEM. A lot of folks buy an emergency generator but then never go through any mock drills to ensure they have everything they need and know how to make the switch to and from generator. So far the longest I have had to run from generator was 4 days.
yep....this isn't a cure all for off grid living my friend...this is an emergency generator or portable generator, not a run my house for 6 months machine

lol....go price one my friend....oh don't forget the inspections and the propane tank rental. I can use this anywhere on the farm, take it camping or run power equipment remotely, can't do that with a "sitting there" standby generator. They are nice, don't get me wrong, but this is more versatile and hands on. Dad has a Generac and he loves it, except when the water delay contactors go bad....all of them went bad!

Get an extra Exhaust head for that thing. They go about 750 hours or so. Remember they are not a PRIME power device, only a backup.

Hey, on that well pump, and if the AC is not a mini-split, get an AC motor control, like a Micro-Air or the other brand. It will help a bunch.

It’s plenty as long as no electric ovens or electric dryers are added on.
Well pump....HVAC that's what keeps your pipes from freezing my friend. Fridge, freezer doesn't draw much but hot water, HVAC and well pump is what we're really after to keep us from having to spend the $$$ to repair everything that breaks when frozen

Do you have a transfer switch installed that allows you to run both the shop and the house? Also, there are several TH-cam videos on building a generator enclosure that has ventilation for exhaust and keeping the gen cool.

You did the right thing! A portable gasoline generator is the way to go IMO. Natural gas standby is dependent on things beyond your control. Propane is WAAAYYY too expensive to run for long periods.

You mean that propane does not need to be rotated every 6 months like stabilized gas. Also in an emergency, cost becomes irrelevant when you need to stay warm in the winter while keeping the fridge and freezers cold. It is all temporary and usually never more than a week. @@Ragecon87
Gasoline under Bidenomics is very expensive now, and will be hard to get in time, and certainly under a massive power outage or EMP. , and will only get worse. Propane is only $1.59. Plenty of propane and natural gas.
@@Ragecon87 Propane is substantially less energy dense. Then you have the expense of tanks or a giant tank on the property subject to being dependent on the propane company coming to refill. Trust me, I know. I have lived through countless hurricanes.
My 16KW Generac Standby under a full load is only 1.5 to 2 gallons of clean power per hour. Under a half load about 1 gallon of propane, and I use a lot of power. Propane stores nicely and doesn't go bad. 1,000 gallons would last me for about a month. Storing propane is compact, unlike gasoline. Propane is safer. Good luck with gasoline if you can get it.
Looks like a great generator...almost bought a smaller different brand generator on cyber-Monday but ran into a comment about THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). Apparently, generators that produce "dirty" electricity Arnt safe to use with sensitive electronics ...i e systems in newer homes... couldn't load the link for this generator but Norther tool did claim all of its generators produce under 6% THD. Is this something you looked for when buying or is it mentioned anywhere? Sounds like what you're running wouldn't have sensitive electronics anyways but just curious that is a nice size. Thanks!

Love how they compare to Honda engine. Just like the Predator. BUT it ain’t no Honda engine. 😂Looks nice. Even though it’s fuel injected it’s imperative to have fresh fuel and run it periodically.
Right, everyone says "Just like a Honda". LOL I use only non-Ethanol fuel in my Honda EU7000. Using non-corn juice in these is the best thing you can do to ensure reliability. I also noticed there is no pull-start backup on the Northern unit. Probably because no one would have the strength to pull the cord anyway. Keep a jump box handy.
it's arguably better than Honda! Northern tool took the best tech from every engine and built this bulletproof system

Only time will tell. Every time someone comes out with something brand new it's suddenly "Better than Honda". I'm not saying Honda is flawless, but their reputation was built over time. Will it start in minus temperatures? Will it continue to run when it's over 100 degrees? I mean, everything works great right out of the box. Time is the only judge of reliability and dependability. It definitely looks like a nice unit power-wise and feature-wise but keep in mind all those fancy whistles and bells can fail and I doubt you'll have much luck with replacement parts. Let's circle back in 10 years and see how it's doing. Again, I hope it does well.

Well Josh, most of us like what we like for some reason ro another. But FoundOnRoadDead would be the last pic of any vehicle for me. I have had my experiences in the past. For the money the Raptor cost, you could have had one kick ass Toyota Tundra.
Warning - with EFI generator (from COSTCO) it will not start without battery (EMERGENCY pull start does not work). you better make sure you have a working battery for emergencies!
Generally batteries don't completely die, they may not have power to start the generator, but can sustain it while it's running. Much like when your car clicks when the battery is dead, some power just not enough
@@matt45540 NOT the case based on experience it would NOT run with old battery when doing pull start. As soon as new battery installed, it worked fine.

Be sure to check the THD Total Harmonic Distortion before plugging in any sensitive electronics. Recommend to be < 5 THD to avoid damage.

We are thinking of buying a new car. Some hybrid cars allow power out and to use the car’s engine to charge the battery. We are looking at the Mitsubishi Outlander which has this feature. It could be a way to power a few important appliances like a fridge or freezer if there is a blackout.
Of course if the car needs to be driven the appliances no longer have power.

I personally woulda gone with. 20+kwh generac uses propane/ natural gas’s which is super efficient and has the sense to auto start when loss of power is detected
When I looked at the price of the Northstar generator, it is $4300. I did not think that it would be that expensive. For another $300, you can get the 14 kw Generac with the whole house transfer switch.

Hybrid Solar with generator backup. Start with minimal battery backup and increase when you can afford. In the long run electricity will rise in price as reliable generator( nuclear/coal);are shut down and partly replaced by erratic renewable wind solar and hydro

I don't think I'd be toting it around the farm, those type electronics are somewhat fragilly. If you need a gen, say out in the field to repair a piece of equipment, I'd just get a bobcat welder/generator to power up the the tools needed to get something ready to weld, and then weld it and be done. When they compare themselves to Honda, it just tells me they aren't quiet as good. True it has no carb to gum up, but, injectors gum up too. Fuel tanks also gum up. Esp when they sit for long periods, so, at least once a month start up and run is imperative. I know it's costly, but I'd run ethanol free fuel. Since you live a good ways away from the shop(as of now anyway) You should get yourself one of those alarms like they use on chicken houses that give off a loud alarm to let you know the power is out. Since it doesn't seem this doesn't have an auto start. I think in the future, I get something like the Generac whole home gen with auto start. Then, a trip for a few days out of town will give you more piece of mind. A propane system at that, so it will be worry free in case of something big (think of what happened when Hugo came through or, the blizzard of '93.) I know you probably got it for free or at least a good deal since they sponsor you, but, free isn't always better.
One question though, I see the need to have power run into it to keep the battery up to snuff, but surely it charges it's own battery when running, right?

So where's the new technology? Honda came out with their EFI generator (EU7000) 10 years ago and it's an Inverter unit to boot. So I would hardly call this unit new technology. I love how the salesman throws around the "similar to Honda" statements. Right.. they are all similar to Honda until something needs repaired and then you discover there are very limited parts for these Chinese wonders. I'm not surprised Northern doesn't list the noise level of that thing, it is LOUD. Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with it.

Can you adjust the line frequency to 62hz? I don't see the manual online. I ask because if you use this (or any other non-inverter generator) in conjunction with a Solar system, the generator should idle at 62hz and droop to 60hz under load. The reason is that 62hz will cause the solar system to curtail power generation so it doesn't back feed and potentially harm the generator. You should never run an inverter type generator in parallel with a solar system because the inverter generators ALWAYS make 60hz. Again, to be clear.... 62 hz means "solar don't make any/much power" and 60hz means "solar and generator need to make all the power they can". Hope this makes sense.

Hey Josh, that's a cool generator with EFI and electronic starting plus it's pretty compact. I was thinking since you already have a couple of tractors, You could probably later on get a PTO generator, that thing would probably power 90% of everything you have and be pretty good on fuel consumption. I bought a new Winco 15kw PTO generator and it's safe for sensitive equipment with less than 5% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) about 5 years ago and it only requires 30 pto hp at max output. I have an old 1968 MF135 diesel tractor and it pulls it like nothing and only uses about 1 gph of fuel under full load. Even if you could get a bigger generator and had a small tractor, it can still be utilized and be used at what ever the tractor could put out at max output. I guess I'm thinking about how other people have done things in the past and was something that I have followed that works good on the farm when the power goes out. Keep up the cool videos👍

Wait until the under dash clik clik clik kicks in. I think in the very short term a gen set is ok. After superstorm sandy having had no power for 6 months you find out real quick its not feasible to keep a gen running to keep food.
Sandy was indeed bad. You can only keep so much gasoline on-hand, even non-Ethanol. The key in a long-term emergency when fuel is scarce is to not run the generator 24/7. Only run it the absolute minimum to keep your food fresh or provide heat. Still, the clock is always ticking. The other important thing is to TEST THE SYSTEM. A lot of folks buy an emergency generator but then never go through any mock drills to ensure they have everything they need and know how to make the switch to and from generator. So far the longest I have had to run from generator was 4 days.
yep....this isn't a cure all for off grid living my friend...this is an emergency generator or portable generator, not a run my house for 6 months machine

lol....go price one my friend....oh don't forget the inspections and the propane tank rental. I can use this anywhere on the farm, take it camping or run power equipment remotely, can't do that with a "sitting there" standby generator. They are nice, don't get me wrong, but this is more versatile and hands on. Dad has a Generac and he loves it, except when the water delay contactors go bad....all of them went bad!
