This song is significant in Eurovision history; it is the first song where the lead singer of the wining song not only sang but also performed elaborately. Turkey won with the same strategy the following year, then Ukraine ... etc....
You're absolutely right. Despite that Turkey 2003 didn't have much choreography - dancers did the whole job, not Sertab but Marie N (Latvia 2002) and Ruslana (Ukraine 2004) did a fantastic job at singing, dancing and even ACTING at the same time
This performance completely makes sense. She's basically singing about wanting to have the upper hand in her relationship, so slowly she reveals her real self throughout the performance. It was genius, if you ask.
Even if you don't like the song, you can't deny the performance, with it's suits, costume changes,flamenco-ish feeling and lesbianism was freaking amazing
This is the first Eurovision winner I remember, as a 8 years old I gaped at Marie N with shiny eyes and in awe, and years later one has to wonder: How many people did she help to realize they are gay?
She's NOT gay! She's married and has a kid. Even if she was, where's the problem? I'm happy that she won. I was 6 years old and i remember whatching her win. I was so happy for my country. At least one winner for Latvia.
@@thesnesgeek 2016 was last year we used system where juries chosed who will fight for representing, now in supernova anyone can send in their song and try to go to finals, havent been working so good
I don't understand this song's haters, I think this is amazing! Sure, Love Injected or Heartbeat are way better, but still, an amazing song, I'm glad that Latvia won that year.
In defence of the song I can see why it won: It's Latin influenced and at the time Latin sound was very popular around Europe. And of course the performance which was actually quite ahead of it's time and very hard to pull off..
I think a lot of people ''hate'' this song, not because its bad, but because they liked Malta's song better, and they are still salty about it. Ou Well.
When I watch it first, back in the days when I was a teen, I wanted my country, Spain to win, and was very upset that such an spanish-inspired song won instead , but now I see it and I recall the feminist meaning on the song, and absolutely LOVE IT.
Si.
She is enough successful singer❤ by the way Today at night on Latvian TV channel 7 was translation of her show recorded in 2002❤ I wander why it's not available there 😢?
Remembering those moments from the 2000's is a twist. Back in 2002, in Tallinn, Estonia, Marie N and Latvia won the Eurovision Song Contest thanks to 12 points from Estonia, Germany, Israel, Lithuania and Spain. Latvia has caught the most 12 points with 5 twelve points.
Ah come on, the song it is really nice... the dance is so cool and the perfomance really good! Better than other Latvian entries, this one it's really catchy
Güzel bir şarkı, 2000'lı yılları özellikle de ilk dönemlerini gayet güzel bir şekilde yansıtmış. Çocukluk zamanlarımdaki insanın ruhunu haraketlendiren şarkıları hatırladım ❤
Hands down the sexiest performance in the contest's history. The Flamenco-esque dances and dancers, her hands on her partner, the way they 'slowly' shed her manly clothes to reveal a red dress... I don't know if the song deserved to win, but this one takes the (steamy) cake. Ay ay ay ay ay ay.
Funny, catchy and an outstanding performance, which fits the lyrics perfectly well! And I, personally, also like the music :D Deserved winner in a weak year :)
I genuinely think this is one of the best winners of this century. It's such a solid entry: Catchy song, entertaining performance, good vocals... It has it all! Definitely a well-deserved victory. I hope Latvia finds the right formula again
Before her everybody was just singing the song, she turned this into performance. That was something unusual. Now everyone is doing it, she would not win now, because the song is nothing special, but at that time that show helped her.
lol Make your mind up didnt do a costume change on this level, they just ripped the skirt off, and there was another skirt underneath. Plus it made no sense to the actual song. While hear Maria sings about her feminine feelings and how she wants to take more control in her relationship, it makes more sense for the costume change and its done much better.
According to author and historian John Kennedy O'Connor in his book The Eurovision Song Contest - The Official History, despite its success at the contest, "I Wanna" gained the dubious distinction of being the first Eurovision winner that was not released outside of its own territory.
