- A walk from Murray Hill in Midtown Manhattan via 2nd Avenue to the Roosevelt Island Tram. From there I take the tram to Roosevelt Island. The Roosevelt Island Tram is the cost of a MetroCard swipe (currently $2.75) and offers sweeping views of Midtown Manhattan, the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, and Roosevelt Island.

I lived on Roosevelt Island from 77,-87 . It is quite different now . The original tram got worn out and had a spectacular breakdown in the 90's where it was stuck above the river for hours . It also used to sway in the winds and sometimes bump the tower rails requiring it to slow way down passing the highest tower or stopping and waiting for swaying to cease! So the new trams have wide spaced track cables to give them more rigidity in winds also saving docking time by not bumping into the dock guard rails(now gone) . The old trams also ran on a common loop of haul road so both had to move in opposite directions at the same time full or empty.
Good to see this- brought back memories of my holiday in August 23. I took the tram ride because it seemed a unique way of seeing the city. Had to walk along 50th Street from 12th Avenue (past Rockefeller & St Patrick's Cathedral) to 2nd Avenue. Amazing trip.

I may have made this same comment before because it has been in my mind, so please forgive me if I am repeating myself. Two things I remember about walking in Manhattan in the busiest days of summer. One is that the sound levels can approach that of standing next to a jetliner. Combined with the heat your senses are overloaded. But there are many climate controlled and sound limited office buildings; when I stepped into one the quietness and coolness made me feel like I had traveled through an intergalactic portal into a completely different world. Also, I remember being surrounded by seemingly thousands on one street, and turning a corner I found a completely empty and quiet street, like a street out of a post-apocalyptic movie.
I went on monday afternoon. It is a nice activity to do in NY not expensive.

At 12:24 AK mentions Tudor City area , I read somewhere this is the area where Johnny Carson lived in the 1960s during his early stint as host of The Tonight Show. Not to far from Rockefeller Center .
FYI - Payment/boarding process starts at minute 36:00 and the actual tram ride starts at minute 39:30. Mostly involves the walk through Midtown Manhattan.
