Yes. There is a reason there have been no subsequent King Johns in England...As always, this was a well-researched, thorough, and discerning video! Thank you and take care.

Many royal children have been named John, including John of Eltham (son of Edward II) and John of Gaunt (son of Edward III). They were just respectfully the second and third sons of Edward II and III. They could have easily inherited the throne if their elder brothers had met with a mishap.

"The Lady of Hay" by Barbara Erskine tells this story ... and a damn good read.

They would have died of thirst first. And that slice of bacon was probably covered in salt, as most meat was preserved that way before cooking. What a horrible way to die.

The plantaganats were a crazy family, lots of Mental illness. His grandson Edward 1st was worse, the slaughter that happened in Wales was horrific. The red wedding in game of thrones was probably inspired by slaughter at Abernathy Castle. 😢😢😢

IIRC, Martin said that the main inspirations were the (probably fictional) Black Dinner of Scotland and the real life Massacre of Glencoe (also in Scotland).

I'm sure plenty of the Wars of the Roses inspired the Game of Thrones.

Corfe is a village, with a sense of unrest and foreboding, if you visit the castle, it feels like a gallows site, like lots of bad things happened. please note i do not believe in ghosts and stuff, but i do believe we can feel the echos of good and evil, i have visited some churches where century's of peaceful reverence and prayer, just leave a calmness in the place. i have visited gardens where there is just calm and joyous natural feelings.

My Mom had a similar experience at Dachau when she was a teenager way back in the 60's. She said that when she stepped into the crematorium, she felt like a thousand pairs of eyes were staring at her with sadness, grief and anger. She had to run out of there before she could burst out crying. Like you, Mom doesn't believe in ghosts. But she believes that there is something (not evil) at Dachau that doesn't want you to forget.

@@janeyrevanescence12 i think many of us feel the pain imprints of history, your mum is probably really empathetic.

People need to be reminded that Maudes son was not a child... he was a grown man. He was married.

Had to stop watching the video due to the terrible pronunciation of Abergavenny.

@@Lemmy-Historian But at least John spent time in England and produced heirs (Edward IV- descended from Henry III & his wife Elizabeth Woodville descended from Henry's sister, Eleanor are Plantagenet De Montfort as well as Henry's daughter).

Without King John, the continuous Lineage may have died out & they'd have to seek distant relatives or worse- strangers...

I accept that he produced heirs an argument. But when he was in England, he did stuff like what I talk about in the video. He has very few redeeming qualities, IMO.
