Thanks Greg. It is really helpful that you also have the grace to show when things don't go quite right. Saves the rest of us from making the same mistake and is very valuable. I liked the hi speed ram installation run around, brought a smile to my face. Thank you!
Im loving this as I dont have real mill i only have a muti access vice with my 4 hp drill press it takes longer towork with so not to preasure the drill but you dont see many Bridge Ports being striped an repaired. Thanks
I'm so envious of this mill, it's like new old stock, I can still see the factory scrapings on the ways. Really liking this series Greg, can't wait to see it make some chips. Thanks!
What a workout! Even with the engine hoist Very nicely done. It is wisdom after the fact, but I'd do a preliminary leveling right now. You already have a lot of mass on it. And there is still a lot of heavy stuff to go, like the table. It makes no sense to spend five hours leveling -- what does that thing weigh? four tons? -- if you can get it close to final now. I watched Tom Lipton's lathe-leveling video and felt the pain. Even with toe jacks.
Thanks for the video, on my hoist instead of using the handle to lower the hoist I made a 4" lever that fits onto the lowering valve its much more controllable in lowering the hoist
Greg, You'll be making chips before you know it! I felt for you when you lifted the ram with the strap . . . so close yet so far! But the eye bolt did the trick! Good luck on the rest of your restore. Thanks for the video! Have a good one! Dave
Hi Greg interesting video but you got me worried around 11.40 mins in you show the two bevel gears greased and the nut on the larger one should there be something to hold the smaller one on ?
Pretty clever idea to let the hoist slowly drop the knee while you guided it into position. This series is very interesting to me, and I appreciate all the detail photos and explanations. Sorry about "Mr. Bozo's" visit. :)
16:32 the moment you realized ya just screwed the pooch. Been there, done that. ;-) Good series putting this together! Thanks! 27:05 Kinda forgot a part there didn't ya? lol
Greg, Really enjoy your videos. On the mill knee, I have to do the same thing. I was wondering how you selected the balance point to attach the hoist to. Was it trial and error, lucky guess or did you just assume the designer put the jack at the balance point? Thanks, Russ

Learning a lot about these machines just buy following your disassembly and reassembly process.
Thanks for sharing!
Why not up high the z axis ballscrew
Looking great Greg and great documentation for others in the future too. Nice work

I do the same thing with the hoist when putting three point hitch covers on tractors, just let it down nice and slow!!
Greg Make sure you put the felt wiper cover on the rear of the saddle. Thanks for posting,

I forgot, BUT I was able to raise the knee high enough to get it on by taking out the stop bolt in the column.
Nice work :) looks liike a realy nice mill pal.!

It happens :-)
when do you get it level ?
+jcortiz123
That was the last thing I did and I didn't film it. Straight foreward with metal shims and a machinist level.
is better to level it at the end, with all the weight on it or at the beginning?

looking good nice work.
Big job by yourself.
Are you going to rebuild or clean the table? Mine needs work and would love to watch you do yours.

A little shop crane like that is luxury lol! We had to move my machine 100 percent by hand, not an easy task.
found this while looking for some J head brake downs ( Bluechipmachineshop ) google it . It may have some info you don't have
Very impressive
Coming along well Greg. :-)
A mill in the laundry room... Hopefully you to don't get too many shavings in your underwear!
