One of my favorite pseudo Christmas movies.
Mel and Danny are both 10 years younger than their characters. Mel probably wouldn't have been a special forces sniper in Vietnam. When he says he ran into the Shadow Company guys in 1969, Mel himself was 13.
I'm always prepared for Dixie's house to explode. The second the airplane in the background reaches the fireplace - BOOM!
The Christmas tree drug dealer who Mel tries to get to shoot him is actually Anthony Keidis', the singer for Red Hot Chili Peppers, father.
Murdoch's wife is Darlene Love. From Wikipedia, "In 1962, she began recording with producer Phil Spector who renamed her Darlene Love. She sang lead on "He's a Rebel" and "He's Sure the Boy I Love," which were credited to the Crystals."
She had other hits after those.
Lethal Weapon 3 & 4 are also good films. They are supposed to be making a Lethal Weapon 5, but the characters would be in their 70s and 80s as Mel and Danny are in their 60s and 70s now.
Gary Busey (Mr. Joshua) is a professional crazy person.
Random trivia: in 1990, Mel starred in "Air America."

Just gonna say Riggs didn't actually take any of that cocaine. It's a slight of hand trick where he poured it into his other hand and wiped it on his leg. Smoooooth.

Also keep in mind that many guns, especially 9mm, had 15 round magazines, and you can do alot with that especially if you can think that they could pick up extra mags. So reloading is almost a non-issue.

Fun fact: I was a kid when this was being filmed (Yes, I'm old). And the bldg the lady jumps off at the beginning is my family's old apartment at the time. I watched them throwing a doll off the side of our bldg for like 2 days. That is E Ocean BLVD, Long Beach, CA.

Always fun to spot a landmark you know, or your neighborhood, but seeing your own apartment in a movie is pretty cool. I lived in and around LA for 25 years, and obviously always knew movies were shot around town, even was in some sets, but never really realized just how many until I moved away six years ago. Everything I watch now I recognize from somewhere around LA, especially the older movies. Lived near Ocean and Cerritos in the LBC back around 2000. And yeah, it’s BLVD, not Avenue like the Yellowcard song. Haha

@@BDogg2023I moved from NJ to Los Angeles in 1998. I had gotten season 1 of Baretta free from work. It's set in Philly. One Thanksgiving, my parents flew out to visit and stayed at the Sportsmans Lodge at Ventura and Coldeater Canyon on Stufio acity. The weekend before I had binged the series. In one episode, Barretta goes to Venice, CA. He glies back to Philky abd drives up to a hotel. It was The Sportsmans Lodge. I ended up parking in the exact same spot. I currently live about two blocks from a Cobra Kai location and the opening of Boogie Nights. Pretty much right between them.

Another noteworthy thing about Lethal Weapon that most people miss - the nature of the soundtrack. Whenever you hear that lone blues guitar riff that sounds Clapton-Esque? The guitar plays whenever it's a scene about Riggs or when there's a focus on his character. What about Murtaugh? You'll notice Murtaugh is always scored by a saxophone. In their respective scenes before they meet, they'll only have their 'own' instruments playing, but by the time they start working together (like the pool house scene), the instruments start playing in a duet, playing together. Framing all of this, the string section frames the narrative and adds necessary suspense in action scenes.
And that's why the soundtrack for Lethal Weapon is a freaking masterpiece. Thank Michael Kamen and Eric Clapton for that!

    • @Madbandit77

      David Sanborn provided the sax.

I love this movie. Martin and Roger being partnered up together actually saved their lives. The friendship that Martin formed with Roger saved Martins life and then to basically be accepted as part of the family by the Murtah family just sealed the deal. Roger probably wouldn't of made it through this movie and save his daughter without Martin's help. I really love these movies and as it stands right now, there are 4 Lethal Weapon movies.

11:25 Many people often miss the reasoning of the flame to the arm. It wasn't to show how tough he was. It was to show how loyal his men were and that they would follow his orders without question.

  • @jeffburnham6611
    @jeffburnham6611 ปีที่แล้ว +12

You have to remember that Murtaugh was a Homicide detective, and Riggs was a Vice detective. That explains their manner of dress, with Roger in a suit and Martin wearing street clothes. You wouldn't expect to see Riggs in a suit any more than you would Roger in street clothes.

I, also, am too old. But, that's just the way it is. This is a quintessential 80's action, buddy copy movie. A lot of fun when it came out. And... still fun. Dated, of course, by the progression of time. The 2nd one is also pretty good. There are 4 of these with Danny Glover and Mel Gibson. (I won't spoil any of them, because I know you don't like that. :)
Thank you for the watch, and the introduction to OGB Reacts. I haven't seen anything there. So, I guess #2 will be my first. See you on the next one.

The Lethal Weapon series isn't exactly my jam but I'll watch anyway, as two people bouncing off each other is great for reaction videos. (And I'll watch #2 on Sam's channel too.) I strongly hope you do more of these.
By the way the sax performances are by the legendary jazz artist David Sanborn (6 Grammys) and Riggs' guitar theme is performed by Eric Clapton (18 Grammys.)

Riggs and Murtaugh are one of my favorite examples of the classic Apollo-Dionysus dichotomy. The brother or sister-equivalents that are polar opposites, but balance each other out perfectly (while also driving each other up a wall). It's the odd couple format at its most-simple, and the actors here are both so gosh-darned-charming, and have such amazing chemistry with each other, that it works perfectly. Also, shout out to the musical score (Michael Kamen working with Eric Clapton, of all people, there) with that theming, too, representing Murtaugh with a bluesy saxophone, and Riggs with an electric guitar, and keeping the instruments away from each other until the characters actually begin to trust each other, at which point, the instruments begin to merge in the score. I just love musical storytelling like that. :D
Funnily, as much as "Lethal Weapon" now feels like a buddy cop film with some darker aspects, at the time of its release, it was seen as a return-to-form "hardboiled" crime film, and even compared to "The French Connection" on more than one occasion, which is kind of absurd, considering how much lighter this film feels than THAT. Says a lot about how over-the-top silly action movies had gotten in the '80s. I do think this film and "Die Hard" helped to pull the genre back a bit, and by the mid-'90s, we were getting gems like "Heat": you know, actual hardboiled crime films!
RE: 47:08, I believe Riggs is supposed to be in his mid-30s here, if he was 19 in the Vietnam War. This is 1987, and the combat portion of the war effectively ended for the Americans by 1973. So, the youngest he could be is 33. Most-likely something like 35 or 36, really (Mel Gibson was roughly 30 at the time of filming). And I'm pretty sure that Rianne is supposed to be 16, since that's roughly how old Traci Wolfe was at filming (CORRECTION: I went back and checked: I got my decade wrong, she was 26, if you can believe it). There's "kid clubs" out there for the 16-to-20 set that don't serve alcohol, especially in bigger cities like LA, so, that's probably the intention? So, yeah, rather-illegal. Heck, age her up, and it's still super-skeevy, since she's the daughter of his best friend and partner. I don't THINK the intention in the script was to suggest otherwise, just that Rianne is "teen swooning" for the sake of humor, but male Hollywood writers of that period had some strange ideas about what was, and was not appropriate, so, I may be giving Shane Black too much credit, here.

"I didn't know it was a Christmas movie"
    "Just like Die Hard!"
"Lethal Weapon" writer Shane Black made an entire career out of Christmas action movies. He also wrote "The Last Boy Scout" "The Long Kiss Goodnight" and wrote and directed "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" "The Nice Guys" and "Iron Man 3" all of which take place at Christmas.
"Die Hard" is the one Christmas action movie he wasn't directly associated with. He was an actor for a while and he was in "Predator" which was directed by "Die Hard" director John McTiernan. Both Die Hard and Lethal Weapon were produced by Joel Silver and lot of the same cast and crew appear in both movies.

Nobody mentions how when Murtaugh's buddy gets shot, the bullet goes through the milk carton in front of him as well. I know it's just squibs but even the best squibs dont' always sell it. I always notice when someone's shot and something near them also gets shot like the bullet went through. Also, for the sake of playful debate, I think Lethal Weapon is not only a Christmas movie (visible decorations, repeated mentions, it's about family, christmas music) but it's more fun than Die Hard while it's at it xD

Even as a *huge* Mad Max fanboy, I'll readily admit that these movies were Mel Gibson's best roles. I don't know that there was any other actor who could've portrayed Riggs as perfectly, and Danny Glover provided the perfect "straight laced" counterpart. The sequels were also excellent.
This may sound weird, but as an ex-Army guy who spent _plenty_ of time on various weapons ranges, shooting was always somewhat therapeutic for me. Very easy to focus in on the target & block out all the other noise going on in your life, at least for a couple hours. I can sort of relate on the pistol aspect, though: the one time I ever fired a handgun it wasn't the recoil that got me, but that since my platoon was running the range we wound up firing off all the "extra" rounds when everybody was done actually qualifying on the pistols, and by the time I'd burned through about a dozen magazines my trigger finger was wore out. Actually did the last couple left handed just for a break. 😂

The reason you bring a helicopter is that you can see more from the sky. Hence why it flew in a big circle. Also, frying that low is taught to the military. It is called NOE (Nape of the earth) when you fly like that, people on the ground will not get as much warning, by the time they see you, they can hardly shoot at you. The higher you are, the greater the declination, which means they have time to see and aim at you.

Indo, the man who tortures Riggs is played by the amazing Al Leong, who (you now just mentioned it) was o e of the terrorists in Die Hard. He grabs the candy bar right as the police are about to storm the Nakatomi tower. He was also in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

I remember during this time in the Hollywood film that it seemed that every Hollywood star seem to be showing off there gluteus maximus. It was definitely a thing in the '80s.

The first two for sure. We have another series in mind with a 1/2 that we'd like to do too. We're certainly not opposed to doing 3/4 of LW, but just need to make sure we don't overwhelm ourselves either.

11:15 I think that was the show how willing he was to follow orders. Like if he's willing to get burned like that just on a word and what do you think he'll do to you if he sent after you kind of deal. It was to put fear in the other guy and make sure he follows orders himself. By the way y'all definitely need to watch three and four as well because all four movies are one giant story that continues to show the relationship between these two guys. And it's definitely a beautiful thing.

Just subscribed...love the two of you doing this..its great. You were trying to figure out the bad guy..it sounded like you thought he looked familiar...i think you are referencing Gary Busey...he has played in quite a few films...one is a movie called Silver Bullet...i heard something happened to him right after the filming of this movie and that it seriously affected his mental well being..in any event..im getting a kick out of these reactions...!🤗

Amanda graduated the same year as I. Fun fact: Mel Gibson starred in “Air America,” with Robert Downey, Jr. it’s not too bad a flick about the CIA Airforce in Vietnam. *the car explodes* (all together now!) “Oooooo!”
Oh, btw, Lethal Weapon 1-4…the best cop series ever! Do them all. Rihanna’s crushing on Riggs is just a silly thing that Riggs comments on to get under Roger’s skin. He has no designs on her.
You both need to see “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension.”

Trivia facts. Air America was a real organization that smuggled heroin and weapons back and forth from Vietnam using military aircrafts. Mel Gibson was in a movie with Robert Downey Jr called Air America where they were both pilots. Denzel Washington was also in a movie where he was a gangster in New York during the war and he used Air America to smuggle heroin into the country for him. Both of those are pretty good movies.

I have worked in video editing and video production. My Ex was the real talent and I was just doing what she said..
In one scene for a movie or video project I had to put a gun to my head and shoot.
Here in the UK guns are really really bad everyone is scared of them.
Having to put a gun, a real gun to my head and pull the trigger. was the hardest thing I've ever done.
It had been double checked by professionals, the barral had been plugged with a steel rod. It would not even be firing blanks. But still after all that it took me about 10-20 takes I just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger while it was pointing at me.
