    Why do we need to put the needle on to the slip of paper? What property of water that makes a needle float?

    • @KidsFunScience
      @KidsFunScience  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can make the paper clip float without the paper, but its harder to try it that way. Using paper towel helps the paper clip float with surface tension. Surface tension is a thin sheet or skin formed by water. Surface tension tightly holds the water molecules together. Thus, if the surface tension of the water remains undisturbed, it will be able to support the paper clip. Thus, the paper clip is not actually floating, it is simply being held on the water surface due to surface tension. thanks Ken

    This is cool but can I know why needed to used paper towel ?

    • @KidsFunScience
      @KidsFunScience  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good Morning Janice, The paper towel helps create surface tension. You can do this without a paper towel, but it is a lot harder. Surface tension is a thin sheet or skin formed by water. Where it tightly holds the water molecules together. So the paper towel gives a little more time for the paper clip to not sink and be held by the waters surface tension. thanks Ken

    What makes the filter paper to sink

    • @KidsFunScience
      @KidsFunScience  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Manyunsa Mukosayi,
      Paper towels are made out of finely divided fibers of cellulose, the principal structural chemical in cotton, wood, and most other plants. Cotton is actually a polymer, which like any other plastic is a giant molecule consisting of many small molecules linked together in an enormous chain or treelike structure.
      When water molecules stick to other materials (paper towel), it’s called adhesion. You can think of this also as absorption. We can see this when we put the paper towel on top of the water. Now that the paper towel has absorbed the water it's more dense and sinks. Thanks Ken

      @KidsFunScience  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good Morning Sasywasy YT,
      Sorry to hear it didn't work. I would like to see if I can help you get it to work. If you could send me a video to elementarysciencenight@gmail.com that would help me to see how you are trying this experiment. If you can't email me, then please answer these questions? How big is your paperclip? Are you using a paper towel to float on top of the water? When you place the paper clip on the paper towel does it sink right away? Or does the paper towel and the paper clip just float? Please explain a little more on what is not working? I know we can get it to work for you. thanks Ken

      Sorry to hear it didn't work. Let me try to help get it to work. Lightly touch the corner of the paper towel to help it sink. Also see if the paper towel has 2 layers. If so peel off one layer. Let me know if that helps? Thanks Ken
