Texas Rig Your Duck Decoys: "The Offseason" - E3

  • If you're a duck hunter, you're looking for gear that lasts, performs, and saves time while hunting. In the process of getting our DOA Decoys ready for the season, we're re-rigging them. The old rigs on our decoys were failing, too light weight and not designed for certain situations.
We upgraded to heavy, tougher, Texas rig built to last longer and eliminate some of the issues we were having while duck hunting.

Well done on this video. Thank you for sharing your experiences and not just recycling information!

I hunt in interior Alaska. For texas rig, I use the monofilament from a weedeater...inexpensive, stiff, strong line and inexpensive fishing weights (halibut sinkers up here). I have texas rigs with weedeater line that has lasted over 20 years, so very durable.
When the season starts I convert my texas rigs to a long line since the water is so deep and I have to pick up dekes solo with a boat...with one pull I can pick up a dozen dekes into the boat.
When the water gets shallow enough, I then convert back to conventional texas rigs.

Good plan! How much does a halibut sinker weigh?

@@HuntFactory 16 ounces at both ends of each long line. Once the water gets shallow enough for texas rigs, I go with 4 oz fishing sinkers on each decoy. Also our Alaska season starts Sept. 1 so the ducks are not colored up yet, so I paint my drake mallard an teals into black body/brown head for good visibility dekes.

Best thing I did was switch to Texas Rig setups. I'll never go back to wrapping decoy string around keels. For my Texas Rigs I bought some foam pipe insulation tubes, cut them down to a manageable size, then glued velcro straps on the foam to secure it together.

Heck of an idea on the pipe insulation!

Thanks! It worked pretty decent. I just cut the sections too long so I'll be redoing them this season. Good luck with the upcoming season.

I've seen people do it with PVC, but with the insulation tubes you can get a little bend/flex out of it if you have to put it in a tight spot. Good luck to you too!

Thanks! Yep you get some good flex out of it and also it already is slit down the side so you don't have to mess with that cut. :-)

It all sounds good. However, we tried coated cable last year and it got terribly tangled. Your cable looks a lot thicker than ours. I hope that makes the diference.

FDH and Faith 1 1/2” PVC will help keep the lines organized or you can tie a knot with every dozen. Lifetime Decoys TH-cam channel offers alternatives for storage and transport.

Aren't those what people call Carolina rigs? I switched all mine from pvc to .950 weed wiper line. I also have 10' on mine because I do hunt deeper water

Does the Krylon have an UV affects that might mess with the decoys appearance from the birds perspective? I ordered 2 dozen 72” 6oz rigs. Great video

They sell kits where you can cut your own length so you can make them work for the depth of water you typically hunt.

There are two types of pvc line. How to tell them apart is crude.
You bite the line. If it gives and feels a bit rubbery that's the good stuff. If it's hard as a rock and barely deforms when you bite the line. .don't buy it.
Sorry...you're going to look weird biting on plastic line at the store. If you buy the right brand it lasts for ten years or more.
I keep finding decoys with green plastic lines. Those seem to last forever. Rubbery feel.

450 lb monos where its at. lifetimes are good but if you start just dropping them in bags or boat that cable is to limp and can knot up on you
