🚨 Disclaimer: I wanted to apologise in advance that I ramble a lot in this video, it does lessen up as the video goes on. I think I was very over excited since AGGGTM is one of my favourite book series 😅
I would really love the series if I hadn’t read the book yet. I kinda expected it to be more accurate to the book, but on its own.. the series is good and enjoyable to watch ☝🏼
Started watching it yesterday. Nice, simple fun. Nothing too deep that requires much thought, which I guess is to be expected for a teenage mystery series.
It's such a fun watch! I would say not to underestimate it too much. It definitely has more mystery and requires more thinking in the books but I think they did a great job translating it!
@@analyticalplum I’m glad you said this. I know the SW very well, and the whole process has been very difficult. I’ll summarise the goals of the writer for the series: - First season: Pip is a good girl who think bad people do bad things - Second season: Pip is a good girl who realises good people can do bad things - Third: Pip realises she’s a bad girl HJ had initially tried to adapt the season as faithfully as possible to the books. Your comment that sometimes you can’t adapt things perfectly to screen was SPOT ON. A lot of this book relies on exposition and Pip working things out in her room and we’re basically seeing inside her head. This was impossible to put onscreen. Holly is not a screenwriter, and the BBC realised they had to bring a proper screenwriter on to make the show function. As such, the story had to be fundamentally changed. The characters couldn’t be developed fully in eight episodes, and HJ refused for the characters to be expanded upon further. As such book fans were going to be dissapointed from the start. The goal was to make a fun, light, murder mystery that follows the story, is exciting to watch, BASED upon the books. A perfect reproduction of the books would have been boring for fans and unwatchable for newbies. Holly this knew that fans were going to be dissapointed. Throughout the whole process she was paranoid about backlash, to the extent of stunting black and brown characters for the fear that depicting their actions as in any way negative would be racist. Which is crazy. She was not in a position where decisions were made without her consent. She signed off on everything and could veto anything she didn’t like. She knew that their were limitations to the faithfulness of the adaptation, and so fans would be upset. She wanted the money from the TV show, but didn’t want to lose fans and show offered up absolutely nothing. It happened again and again - decision made, Holly agrees, everyone double checks she’s happy, she is, it’s put in the script… And she breaks contract, goes online, and blames the show runner for everything. I ask every book reader to think of the scenes most crucial in the book, and try to imagine them onscreen. A lot of the exposition and figuring stuff out would be an entire episode of Pip sitting in her room narrating. This has to be translated into scenes in a creative way, which HJ not only didn’t like - but also made every attempt to kneecap. She asked for multiple story aspects to be changed, which has greatly upset some fans - and denied any responsibility. Tl;dr I’m glad to see so many people watching and criticising the show, and none of this is to say criticism of the show is invalid or whatever. I’m saying this to give context, and so people don’t mindlessly blame the writer who doesn’t have the benefit of a large and vocal fan base. Holly Jackson was very much involved, and at no point was anything done against her will.
I’m always open to changes when it comes to adaptations from books because I realise how difficult it can be! As you mentioned about how Pip does a lot of thinking in her room, that’s something that wouldn’t have been interesting to watch so often. So I think the way the show was laid out was absolutely brilliant! In terms of the fans being disappointed, there is always going to be some that aren’t happy because books are also part interpretation and imagination. Especially only being 6 episodes there was SO much to squeeze in so I am happy with the pace that the show took. But I definitely enjoyed this series :)

I would answer but I have no idea what a senior project is 😂 When I did EPQ, it was different to how it is in the show/book so it may vary. For me, I had to create a well documented research project based on a topic we pick (Quite similar to AGGGTM). The difference for me was that it was an extra AS level rather than something needed for University.
@@analyticalplum Okay. That sounds kind of similar to a senior project. For my senior project I raised a Seeing Eye puppy for a year in 4-H and did a report on it. Basically I was just required to give him basic training and get all his puppyness out of him before he went to the main Seeing Eye Dog school to get proper training.

Where to watch this series??
BBC Iplayer in the UK
You look like a young Elizabeth Taylor. You have a very classical beauty, treasure it
Thank you so much!!
that man is daniel da silva ahahaha !!
It wasn’t until I was editing it that I realised! 🤦♀️ I swear I have such face blindness because I didn’t recognise him out of his police uniform
So is an EPQ the British equivalent of a senior project?

Where do we watch it from
On BBC Iplayer but if you aren't in the UK, then I think you can get it on Netlfix the 1st of August
Is the show faithful to books?
I would say kinda. The main premise of the book is still there but there are quite a few new things going on (plot wise) and small changes
Absolutely not lol
