9:08 I agree. You did a fabulous job! It looks great. I'm glad I never have to finish my stairs. These days most stair jobs I get are from a store that I do lots of installs for (Including moldings, doors & cabinets). If the job has no fittings, then they usually prefinish everything before the install. If there are fittings and some other jobs, then they have someone come in and finish it all after I'm done. I prefer them finish it afterwards, so I can use face grained plugs and sand them flush. Plus I sand everything, their finisher usually doesn't.
And I think you're right. there is no real 1 coat product out there that looks good in one coat. You always need a second coat. Do you plan on doing a final install video? Would love to see it, if so.

Thank you for this detailed message. I appreciate that very much. I like your system - especially the part where the painter comes in and stains and clear-coats the railing! I do kind of a hybrid thing. I put the posts in raw so I can plug them and sand them up before staining. The railing, shoe and half-newels are finished ahead of time. If there are wooden balusters they are finished first as well. There's a final install video coming soon along with a separate video on the baluster installation. Glad to have you on board. Cheers, Scott

Looks great in the shop and will look amazing once installed.
As for 1 coat products, I suspect they only work on look but don't touch items.
I always give multiple coats of Finnish to my projects.
    Have a great day.

Thank you Yvon. You hit the nail on the head when you said, "look but done touch items." I totally agree. Thanks for the comment! Scott

You should get yourself a set of bunny planes to fair the rail connections, they work well.

Thank you. I will look into that today. My friend has some he might be selling. Cheers, Scott

@@wessm3407 I will add them to my wish list. Just bought a Lie-Nielsen rabbet block plane so I have to save up for the bunny’s.

If you take a makita one inch belt sander, turn it upside down, use the handle as a leg, turn it on and it will sit there without you touching it. Take your balusters in two hands and spin them over the belt with a 120 or higher belt on it. I'd adjust the speed to whatever feels comfortable. There's spots on the turning you'd still have to do by hand but you'd save yourself a ton of time I'd bet.

Ahhh, the time I borrowed Mama's Rowenta iron to do Edgebanding... Kinda overstepped my bounds!
    Railing looks great!! True Craftsmanship.
I agree on the 1coat. Saying covers in 1 coat may be true but I think it's done to appeal to homeowners. Same as "no primer needed".
Just curious, do you track the hours on projects like this?

Funny my wife bought me that iron from the Restore because she didn't want me using her good one. Yes the one-coat thing is an advertising hook. I haven't always paid attention to the real-time it takes to do certain tasks. But I'm starting. I'm doing another railing system at the moment and I'm tracking the time. A lot more time than I anticipated. It's taking me 15 minutes to sand an 8-foot piece of contemporary railing, 10 minutes to wipe it down and de-nib, and 30-minutes to apply the first coat of stain. No wonder painters charge so much for these jobs. But it's justified. Thanks for the comment Jay. Cheers, Scott
