If you want to see the Old 97's without makeup, they performed the Christmas song -- with Kevin Bacon, of course -- on the Tonight Show.
What a fun special. And, yes, it does jerk a tear or two, but that's not surprising for James Gunn. He knows how to strike that balance.

I am so glad they included "Christmas Wrappings" by the Waitresses to the soundtrack, they were a truly underrated 80's band

The movie Bacon was watching was "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" probably most famous for its appearance on MST3K

The Old 97s are James Gunn's favorite band. Yes Kevin Bacon is married to Kyra Sedgwick. Didn't Bucky get a new arm in Wakanda?

Ye he got a new arm because the old one was destroyed in civil war.
So he still only had one robotic arm

Merry Christmas! You got an immediate like when you got misty over the Pogues.
👏👏🥰😭🤧 I love that song so much.

I completely agree with you that the animation style looked like the animated LOTR movie. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Fun reaction, you're 1 of the few who caught the GoBot's exist in the MCU connection (who knows if it'll go anywhere or just a joke) I heard somewhere that James Gunn said "Nebula went to Earth abs ripped Bucky's arm off" (remember Nebula & Rocket spent the 5 years of the blip together as the only surviving guardians, forming a special bond I'm sure)

    The guardians have saved Christmas.

Glad you held off watching this. I've seen a number of reviews since it was released but this was just that much more meaningful.

I watched this on Christmas Day, having seen Neil had done a reaction video. 😄
I really enjoyed it. It was quite sweet.
I’m not up to date with all the MCU, so it’s great that it was fairly stand-alone.

It's been speculated before that Mantis could be a half-sister; in GotG2 where Ego talks about spreading his seed through the galaxy, one of the women shown was...whatever race Mantis is.

This was obviously NOT Bucky's arm, Nebula wasn't on earth and Mantis and Drax had no reason to even attempt to steal the arm. But they raided Christmas Castle, a shop for Christmas paraphernalia and presents. Once Bucky had become one of the good ones, how long do you think it took some toy company to produce plastic arms with metallic paint that closely resemble Bucky's prothesis, that could even be worn? Since Mantis and Drax obviously looted the complete shop, judging by the amount of ornaments used in Knowhere, there probably was a toy arm, too.
Which Nebula found, recognized and wrapped as a present for Rocket. Mystery easily solved. 😀

I know what a turtle dove is, they are native to Europe. They are rare in Britain now, but you can still see them.

In the U.S., I think it's mostly true that "no one knows" what a turtle dove is. After seeing the special, I looked it up. Now I know that it's a type of dove that lives in other parts of the word that are not where I live...but I could have guessed that. I have to admit that I didn't bother to learn more than that. Now...what are "calling birds"?

@@ericjette2435 That’s an interesting one, although we sing calling birds today that’s not the original lyric sung in the 18th century . It’s Colly birds, with colly meaning black like coal. Colly birds was the name for the European Blackbird.

Great reaction. Did you catch Mark Hamill in this?

I love that everyone in the Cosmic Universe has a bizarre and random hatred of actors. Maybe because the only cosmic actors we have seen so far were Asgardian.

The animated opening made me think of the Star Wars Holiday Special. That was so "unloved" that I was afraid that this special might overdo it.

Groot does look weird in this, but he's actually still 100% CGI. Have a great Christmas, Neil!

I hate to say it, but I don't much like this version of Groot. Among other things, he seems too dopey. One theory I've heard is that the design can be used to make a costume that an actual human could wear (you know, for the theme parks) even if the character in the movie is still CGI. (Speaking of real vs. CGI, I've heard a lot of reactors wonder out loud whether Cosmo is a real dog or a CGI dog (or a bit of both). When I first watched the special, I wasn't watching that closely, so I assumed it was a real dog. Upon subsequent viewings, I see a few clues that it's CGI, but damn they did a good job of it. It's the way Cosmo moves, like how he (she? they?) happily leans into being petted by Kraglin. The animators obviously took the time to study how dogs move and did a great job simulating it.)

@@ericjette2435 I'm trying to reserve judgement when it comes to new Groot. I must admit I'm not overly keen on him so far, but I'm hoping he'll impress more in Guardians 3. I agree about the CGI for Cosmo though, they did a great job, and it wasn't until I read the comments on other reactions that I realised there was any CGI involved.

Who knew that Kevin Bacon had such a good singing voice, kinda sounds a bit like Bon Jovi in my humble opinion. I think Bucky has had a few arms over the years like his original one, the vibranium one and didn't he get one when he was "The White Wolf" in Wakanda as well?

Groot is a guy in a suit for this special. Some dude named Vin Diesel.

I can’t decide if your hair is CGI or not. No man should be allowed to have that much hair. I mean I do but it’s mostly migrated to my shoulders and back, but still.
