Music video by Pulp performing Help The Aged. (C) 1997 Universal Music Video Ltd.
Jarvis will be 60 this year, thank you Pulp for the great music
He's getting aged.
Jarvis is brilliant at summing up ordinary peoples lives.
I agree. In the most poetic way.
Of course,he knows what is living like common people
It's an art form to be so profound
He learnt a few tricks, no doubt, from Morrissey and Philip Larkin.
"behind the lines upon their face you may see where you are headed
and it's such a lonely place. " Pure genius.
Just stating the obvious. Pure genius is figuring out a simple equation for the speed of light.
"Let's make this the song of the year, prophetic words from Jarvis Cooker" - Matt Bellamy
I'm here from that tweet too!
Scanning for irony...
...it's clear.
As expected from the brain behind Muse
Proud that my cool people acknowledges another cool people These people are my favorite people

... oh who cares, it was a very pleasant allusion. ; )
Such a great songwriter always witty and cutting and never the slightest drop of pretention. Massively underrated.
Genius!
And they praise Noel Gallagher's lyrics, when this genius exists. Ridiculous.
@@akwilson1676 Noel is a good songwriter, love him or hate him. You can like both, shockingly!
Also, Jarvis has the talent to back up his demeanor, but he can be just as cocky / smarmy in person as Noel is but in an "art school" kind of way rather than "talented kid from council estate" way.
Essentially the whole britpop "rivalries" are mostly about class. Pulp / Blur being middle class and Noel/Liam being working class.
@@bretthackett3357 He was a somewhat decent songwriter, but ran out of juice pretty quickly. The first two albums were all that he could offer, really. Decent tunes with gibberish lyrics.
@@bretthackett3357 I don’t know man I think Noel Gallagher’s song writing is utter shite. He never wrote about anything important. Pulp did. The fact Noel is from a council estate means shit all he’s still an arrogant twat IMO. The only difference is that Jarvis cocker any interview or whatever where he was arrogant is outnumbered by the amount of self deprecating interviews to the point you can tell he is being arrogant for a laugh. Noel Gallagher just liked to make being from a council estate his personality because he had nothing else to him.
Absolute star. Dry as a bone, sharp as a knife, self deprecating talent.
The older you get, the more unironically you hear this song.
Yes. And I think it was written unironically in the first place. Isn't that what makes it quite good?
@@dixonpinfold2582 quite good ? , it's excellent.
@@BobAt101 Yes, you're right, I'm so sorry. Terribly sorry. ;)
Fuck. As a long time fan of Pulp, you just caused me to think about this in a whole new light

Blur!!! The best
@@ryoichiwatanabe648 suede are highly underrated..... They got like 4 bombass tunes the rest are OK
I was 27 when this was released; now I'm 52 and it's true, all of it...
Saw the old people sing this in their documentary, was genuinely moved on how they sang it with such passion. Beautiful song!
Such an underrated band.
very much i agree. in my opinion the best band to come from the britpop era and cocker imho reeks originality and charisma. he always reminded me of my weedsmoking art teacher whom we nicknamed catweasel. great memories cheers!
we had a teacher who we nicknamed Catweasel. He taught RE. 1976ish, long curly greasy hair, checked jacket with elbow pads. He told us his favourite band was Jethro Tull (didn't mean anything to us!) Outside of school he used to take us fishing and tell us cool stories. Will never ever forget that man.
Busyboy 42 --@
I think every school must have had a 'Catweasel' cos ours did too (woodwork)
No they're not. Remembered and loved !!!
RIP Steve
Jarvis is probably one of the best English performers. His way of singing is so theatrical, it's just great...Also the Pulp videos should be a reference to any group who wants to make video clips...
Been their fan since 18. 47 years old today, with my ill mother of 83. This so got a new meaning. Scary, dark and as sweet as mortality can be
Im in same boat as you. 😢 take care
I was 19yo when I started listening to pulp, i'm 38 now and I feel as if I had 50-55yo, my mom is 73yo (i guess) and she's fine, nothing serious almost, but she's old, I'm getting old and I'm thinking about it, walking that path.
I'm losing fear to death, I mean, if something has to happen, it's gonna happen anyway, and I feel neutral to that
This made being kind to old people rock and roll. How do you even do that?
We love you Jarvis
A few days ago I bought the stairlift for my mum... I used it a few times, funny indeed, and when the chair start moving I can't help but sing "Help the aged". Good job Jarvis 😍
So British. So Magnificent.

second best Pulp song
I'm impressed that Pulp released such a dark and heavy album after Different Class. I bet nobody was expecting this as a follow up
My favorite Jarvis's look.... One of the best songs of This is Hardcore...
Re-Release the song and raise funds to help the aged during these difficult pandemic times.
Great idea, I will try to promove it
I bought this on a single back in 98, I think I was 16, and I wasn't even slightly concerned that 'nothing lasts forever' now I am in my 30's it's funny how it's all falling away too fast.
Champman 0102 So true! I'm 36, have had baby brain for almost 5 years now but can still remember the words to classics from Britpop era, such as this geeky handsome devil. Mind when he mooned MJ at the Brits?? 😂😂
same here..funny how it all fall away...
Try approaching 60! Trapped in wearing out body that still thinks it’s 20......☹️
@@ladymuck9395 Cocker was pushing 36 in this video, btw.

A Different Class....Literally.
Criminally underrated
Bought this way back..I'm now 63 loving this 😍
I’d forgotten how awesome this was. Pure class
This has Aged incredibly well...
Tremendous song that I'd almost forgotten about. Maybe we're all aged now eh? Thank you for the memory strange algorithmic AI thing stuff. Mate....?
try to forget that nothing last forever...
Help the aged,
One time they were just like you
Drinking, smoking cigs and sniffing glue
Help the aged
Don't just put them in a home
Can't have much fun when they're all on their own
Give a hand, if you can
Try and help them to unwind
Give them hope and give them comfort
'Cause they're running out of time
In the meantime we try
Try to forget that nothing lasts forever
No big deal, so give us all a feel
Funny how it all falls away
When did you first realize?
It's time you took an older lover, baby
Teach you stuff, although he's looking rough
Funny how it all falls away
Help the aged
'Cause one day you'll be older too
You might need someone who can pull you through
And if you look very hard
Behind those lines upon their face
You may see where you are headed
And it's such a lonely place, oh
In the meantime we try
Try to forget that nothing lasts forever
No big deal so give us all a feel
Funny how it all falls away
When did you first realize?
It's time you took an older lover baby
Teach you stuff although he's looking rough
Funny how it all falls away
You can dye your hair but it's the one thing you can't change
Can't run away from yourself, yourself, yours-s-s-s-self
In the meantime we try
Try to forget that nothing lasts forever
No big deal, so give us all a feel
Funny how it all falls away.
When did you first realize?
It's time you took an older lover, baby
Teach you stuff, although he's looking rough
Funny how it all falls away
Oh, it's funny how it all falls away
Funny how it all falls away
Oh, it's funny how it all, how it all falls away
So help the aged
And I always return to here... 2024/06
Almost 25 years since this song. Funny how it all falls away.
42 here. You're not kidding.
Specially tits
What an awesome song! Bowie´s influence is very obvious from my point of view. Just another musical genius.
@fran castel what? Sorry but no haha this music have a Bowie influence no one is saying that Bowie did this, just saying that Jarvis knows who to looking for and been influenced by
Yup, i can hear loads of Bowie in there albums. for sure influenced by him
When I first heard Common People I thought it was Bowie for a few moments.
Bowie's always there, not only for Pulp. The most obvious influences on Jarvis are/were Elvis Costello and Scott Walker
;-)
this is hardcore. in my top 5 albums. true genius
This music hasn't aged at all. Like I just discovered Pulp and I'm so glad I did, just wish it happened earlier lol.
+Nana Man never too late for that! best albums imo

different class
Lol thanks so much, I'll check them out!
It's definitely up there.
He's got the heart the look the sound,,, what more 😂😂😂😂😊
I didn't 'get' this in the nineties. All these years later........I do.
It's such a perfect song looking back. All this time later and it has never sounded better
Behind the apparent silliness, the message is in fact rather profound. He's so right. The body grows old but the mind never does, my gran is still as funny and sharp as she's always been in her early eighties and I love her. She was telling me that she knew a woman in her late 70s who was getting married again, the woman had been married five times and had outlived all her husbands! So someone said to her Mrs Whoever, why don't you stay alone and the woman replied: "No! I don't like to be alone, even just to have someone to pat it." LOOOL! In her 70s!!! LOL! Guess it never goes away. lol! :-) xx
The Fakey Cake Maker Agreed. plus that singer is also a good actor :)
Philip Richard Greenwood Oh okay.
+The Fakey Cake Maker your TH-cam name is so funny, you're a fakey cake maker and I aint got time for you hoo. Totally forgot about that hahaha

I've spent 25 years thinking it was "another," not "an older." NOW it makes sense.
I' ve been searching this song for over 20 years ... i remember the guy on the chair and nothing more ! I am so happy to finally find it , and it's even more beautifull than i remember
that’s beautiful i’m glad you found it!
this band is so good... would love to see them live

This song really gets me in my feelings, it's so powerful!
I find this songvery Bowie-esque. I am 103 and find this super. I was 60 when Bowie was kin his prime.
The song/single that confirmed that Pulp were/are the greatest band of all time.
I know it's been said several times before, but I think it needs to be said again: Pulp is better than Blur and Oasis combined.
Better than blur not oasis
Here is my personal list of greatest Britpop bands: 1. Smashing Pumpkins; 2. Pulp; 3. Pavement; 4. Nirvana; 5. The Flaming Lips.

What a beautiful song, I love it! incredible album too!
Yours...sss...sss...sss...ssseeeeelf!
I got into this album when I was about 20. I was going through some personal stuff at the time and the album helped me through it, even though the content wasn't relative to my own ongoing experiences. But now I'm rapidly approaching 30, listening back, the songs are too close to the bone and way more real than they were back then.
Jarvis was THE man in the 90's I loved This Is Hardcore...good and bad memories
I laughed about it15y ago. And now it happened to me too!! Happens faster than you'd think.
Jarvis Cocker, una rockstar improbabile, con gli occhiali improbabili per una rockstar.Una persona comune, una persona bellissima.
Got an underrated reception at the time, because it's lower key in many ways than Common People was - it was often viewed as a let down as a follow up (even Russell Senior of Pulp didn't get it). But it's got a nagging genius to it, and the chorus hook especially gets in your head.
Glad This Is Hardcore generally as an album has had the positive reappraisal it deserves in recent years.
Probably its biggest sin is that its theme is way too nerdy lol but i agree with you
RIP Steve Mackey
This is a great song all round.
"The FIRST Book: 'A Tale of Two Stories'."
- St. Straining."
Sang this on the karaoke in a dingy pub with the Jarvis touches added. The indifferent crowd woke up for 3 minutes then went back to crying in their beers.
Forgot what a fuckin gem of a tune this is!!!!
Jarvis. What a cool guy!
So beautiful.
Pulp eterno.

I've always had a soft spot for this song. I must admit, after seeing Ali G do it with him, I keep hearing the "help the m-fing aged" pop in🤷🏻♀️

They're actually a band from the 70s belive it or not. They formed in 1978

I adore Pulp. Completely settles every emotion. Faultless 92-98

look pulp was what the 90s in Britain was all about, the days we still day dream about now and then, it's funny how it all falls away.

It's inspired by A Matter of Life and Death, a classic that you really should check out. In the film, the main character falls in love with a radio operator as he's plunging to his death in his spitfire. When you die you take an escalator into heaven's waiting room and you get checked in by reception. Only this time there's been a mistake...
Wow, thanks for that reference. Need to check this movie sometime.

Yes, and now years later after watching Powell & Pressburger's 1946 British masterpiece, I've only just realised that at the end of the video with the change into black and white and the shots of all the 'stair-lifts' to Heaven (the film was marketed as 'Stairway to Heaven' when it was shown in America) and the band rising on the pedestal in the final 'arena', the video director is clearly homaging similar shots in the Heaven parts of the film, which you can see glimpses of in this new trailer for the recent 4K restoration. th-cam.com/video/S0veuSLLWZ0/w-d-xo.html
