  • Far Out Magazine produced a list of the 10 best goth albums of all time. I take a look at the list to see how accurate it is, and I provide my own version of the top 10.
Bands included in both lists are: Fields Of The Nephilim, The Sisters Of Mercy, Lycia, Dead Can Dance, the Cure, Clan Of Xymox, Bauhaus, The Damned, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Joy Division, Christian Death and The Mission.

Why all these comments like “as a non-goth who’s always liked goth music”?? You like goth music? You’re goth! You don’t need face paint or to get certified by your local goth authority! What is this conformist BS? You can be many things. Life ain’t exclusive.

The problem is that the label "goth" for a person is generally regarded as including their self-presentation (clothes, etc.) and their attitude, as well as their musical taste. No wonder people get confused. I think this is one reason why old school goths would always say they weren't goths. Saying that someone who likes goth music is a goth is a bit like saying that someone who likes country music is a cowboy.

I was a teen in the USA in a Southern state when the post punk/Goth scene was emerging. Punk rockers, death rockers, Goth, Dark Wave/synth all hung out in a collective. It was not uncommon to see a punk wear a Bauhaus T-shirt(Seeing Agnostic Front singer wear Xmal Deutschland tshirt at one of their shows)dating among different scenes. Hell we had skater Goths. But for some reason, the scene(s) got insular & seperation occured, conformity seeped in the individual scenes. The Clan of Xymox singer had a bottle thrown at him for wearing a Black Sabbath t-shirt. i have musical ADHD, so it was hard for me to go to various shows of different genres getting shit from various individuals for going to these shows. To this day it still happens, I love 60's psych rock, Krautrock, Astor Piazolla tangos but listen Echo & the Bunnymen with the same excitemen tas I did when I was 12y/o.

I'd count myself as 'Goth adjacent'. I have several of these albums, used to go to Goth night at Rock City in the late 80s / early 90s, and have seen a few Goth bands (FotN, The Mission, Ghostdance), but if I was going to label myself, I'm still heavy metal. : -) Now, excuse me while I go Spotify that Christian Death album,....

Pornography was and is the soul and embodiment of Gothic at the same time.
I mean the Gothic, that Kafka's psychological painly depths, not the Victorian era playing - that was really quite secondary, although I guess it's different nowadays.

Nico is the Gothmother! Her lp trilogy The Marble Index (1968), Desertshore (1970) and The End (1974) set the foundations in terms of sound, lyrics and atmosphere, being the primordial seeds of Goth.
Together with Velvet Underground luminary John Cale as her producer and arranger, they inspired and influenced several of Goths most important acts. Nico started dressing entirely in black, dyed her hair henna and used dark eyeliner in the late 60s, predating the Goth look and "heroin" chic by years.
    - Bauhaus went on tour with Nico in 1981 and covered John Cale's Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores on their In The Flat Field lp in 1980.
    - Siouxsie covered the Velvets Venus In Furs and also Cale's song Gun on her Through The Looking Glass lp in 1987. Cale produced her 1995 album The Rapture and toured with The Creatures in 1998.
    - Joy Division covered the Velvets Sister Ray, in an interview Peter Hook named Cale as one of his music gods
    - The Sisters Of Mercy covered Sister Ray by The Velvet Underground
    - Christian Death covered Venus In Furs in 1993
Between 2008 and 2012 Cale did some gigs with various guest musicians in honour of Nico, labelled A Life Along The Borderline: A Tribute To Nico. Among the musicians were Peter Murphy, Lisa Gerrard, Soap&Skin, Mark Lanegan and several others.

As a teenager I always played it from start to finish. It always puts me in a truly magical place still to this day like I'm hearing it for the first time all over again. Give it another try and try it in it's entirety instead of dissecting it. It's a perfect balance and is up there with one of the greatest albums of all time. Thank you for doing this list. Elyzium was my introduction to the Nephilim, and I fell in love instantly. The way it's crafted to sound almost like one continuous piece is just incredible. "The Nephilim" is still my preferred album just because it straddles the line between the raw, spaghetti-western "cow-goth" of Dawnrazor and the more symphonic Elyzium, but really my favorite Nephilim album depends on how much "giddyup" I've woken up with on a given day.

With Siouxsie and the Banshees, Tinderbox is generally my most favorite album of theirs, it's such a relaxingly dark album ("The Sweetest Chill" and "92 degrees" are just LOVE). That said, I understand that Juju was a major album that set the stage for the goth sound (well one of them anyway lol) so I'm not bothered that it gets all the praise it does, it really deserves it.
Honestly, the list was a mixed bag and I generally will roll my eyes at a proclaimed "goth" list that includes non-goth music. I like Nick Cave and This Mortal Coil but their music isn't goth. Dark? Sure. But goth has a certain sound to it that makes it what it is and those albums just don't fit that sound. I'll give the list some credit, at least they featured some classics but that's about all I can give it lol.
Your personal list was a lot better, I agree with all your choices (especially Floodland for SOM, I think it's more iconic as well). If I were to throw in 2 of my own that I think are pretty great and could be considered a "classic", Switchblade Symphony's "Serpentine Gallery", so many great songs like "Bad Trash", "Wallflower" and of course the hottest popular track, "Clown". I just feel that when it comes to 90s goth, this album was a classic for the darkwave genre. And sure Siwtchblade Symphony moved away from darkwave into making darker trip-hop type music but there's no question that their debut Serpentine Gallery was a huge classic for 90s goth.
My other choice would be "Head Over Heels" from Cocteau Twins. That dreamy lush guitar with the dark soundscape and Elizabeth Frazier's ethereal vocals, how could one not love it? Considering it was their last goth album before they started moving towards a more dream pop sound, I totally think it deserves some more recognition.

I had listened to only theatre of pain a couple times with some friends back in the day, was a great album, but my influences took me elsewhere, (punk, death/black metal). One day in a record store I saw the ashes album. Newly released. Bought it, took it home, dropped the needle, and it immediately became my favorite album. Was nothing that I had remembered them in theatre, and most of my goth friends, were skeptical about it. Honestly they didn't like it at first. Back then, lacking today's technology, our worlds were much smaller, and it truly felt like that album was made solely for my ears only. Great to see it on your list. And I've also walked away with something that gripped me that Ive never heard before, ( by no means am I well versed in goth) thanks to this video, and that's Lycia. Because a music critic once used the word "gothic" when reviewing a concert of theirs. I think in terms of musical style the Doors are what is called proto-gothic: they influenced the first goth bands but weren't goth themselves. (The Velvet Underground is another proto-goth band.)

Loved your video and recommendations. I’ve always adored most of Bauhaus releases and In The Flat Field is part of my early musical education. That’s why I get frustrated when I hear people saying that it starts with Dark Entries… Which is not true. That was an addition to some cd version and what you find on online platform nowadays. The original album rightly starts with Double Dare. The sequence Dark Entries /Double Dare doesn’t make much sense to me musically. As gorgeous as Dark Entries is, it wasn’t even on the album. I know this might sound like a minor quibble but it does pain me every time I see Dark Entries listed as the first track of such a masterpiece.

Anyway, about eleven years ago I was in the San Bernardino County Jail for a minute. The dude whose bunk was across from me was the nephew of the lead singer of Christian Death. I once visited a punk record store called "Toxic Shock" in Pomona, CA (that is where Rozz [?] was from, Pomona, I grew up in an adjacent city) where one of the owners told me they had him tied up in the back. Great list, and love that you put Ashes at top! Still have an imported copy of that CD in my collection! But I've got Fields of the Nephilim's second album (The Nephilim) at #1 on my personal Goth album list - mostly because it also ranks - and I'm not even sure there's a list for this sort of thing - as the most "occult" album I've ever heard. I'm not into the occult, but in the late 80s Carl McCoy's head emerged fully formed from my Moonchild poster and winked at me; yes, I was severely neuromodded; yes, you can blame Albert Hofmann for that; yes, "Last Exit for the Lost" happened to be playing, and yes, it was right at "that part" (you know, the beginning of the end, "This could be my last regress..."); but this song coincidentally sits at #1 on my Favorite 10 Goth Songs of All Time list, even back then, so of course McCoy would manifest like that and blow my mind; but this is the kind of stuff that a #1 on such a list is made from, I think. I don't "feel" that in the Far Out list at all.

@ByCandlelight666 I love Specimen's campiness. It's a nice bit of levity in an otherwise somber melancholy genre, y'know? Same with Alien Sex Fiend. I like people who take the music seriously, but not themselves so much.

My 2c worth, any list of best gothic albums that doesn't include Lydia Lunch's 13:13 either didn't live through the goth scene in the early 80s, or just misunderstood it. Lydia dripped goth ... As much as Siouxsie did ... But Lydia pulled no punches

Well, it`s all a matter of personal taste, but I`d suggest Elizium by The Fields of the Nephilim as the most compact, conceptual, dark and addictive goth album of all history of that genre of popular music.

That Scott Walker album is really good. I think if some had heard enough of this "Goth" stuff , I think one would and could hear certain qualities in the work of other artist that compliment and or are very similar to those early bands that were branded that Genre.
There is sooo much more out there and to make a list as small as this is very unfortunate. Where's boy harsher? The leather Nun? Shizuka Miura? Bowies diamond dogs? Without that album you wouldn't have 'goth" . Or the Velvets.. Pale blue eyes.. "Down for you is Up" .
There is so much and they all have something to contribute in their own unique way and some are just replicas. Replicants that have mastered the past.
Also...... those early "goth" bands , especially Sioux, or the Cocteau twins or this mortal coil. refused to categorize themselves. Like sticking their work into a specimen jar and labeling it "Goth".
That's not who they were (free) . Its who you want them to be..
    Just something to think about

People who are not listening to Scott Walker are missing out of some really weird and dark music. Bowie was a big fan which can be heard in some of his singing, and he covered Nite Flights.
There's a reddit post that collected several interviews of the big bands popular in the goth subculture, all of them were at best lukewarm to the "goth" label. Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxie didn't ask for the label.
I belonged to a music fandom that revolved around one band and some related bands and artists. I must have been to at least 25 concerts before I became sick and tired of the same sound, the same band and fan quirks, the repetitive lyric themes, etc.
I can't be a fan of only one genre any more.

'Floodland' might be more iconic than 'First and last and always', but compared to the latter it is not even goth but rather a pop album. 'First and last and always' is a 'killer with no filler'...

I came up during these tremendous yrs of punk, goth, wave etc and contributed to its growth. My decades of collecting have many of those mentioned and so many more.

    Hi,
I’m a great fan of gothic rock/post-punk music and other dark elements (i.e. ethereal wave, darkwave), and it’s my favourite music genre of the 1980s. I love the sound, the pessimism surrounding the music, the darkness, and the way bands like the Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees represented themselves as bands who revolutionized the genre. I even love the album artworks from the said albums by bands I cite as influences and inspirations.
What I love about those genres is that bands like Type O Negative and Paradise Lost cited the gothic rock genre as a main inspiration to their own music.
    And also, great video!

I adore Disintegration and The Cure in general, but I agree that if they do a top 10, giving 2 spots to the same band is kinda cheap, and Pornography is as definitively goth, as it is great.
    My top 10:
    1. Only Theater of Pain by Christian Death
    2. Tinderbox by Siouxsie & the Banshees
    3. Floodland by The Sisters of Mercy
    4. Burning from the Inside by Bauhaus
    5. Pornography by The Cure
    6. Bound by Naked Skies by Lathe of Heaven
    7. October Rust by Type O Negative
    8. Nighttime by Killing Joke
    9. Is Nothing Sacred by Lords of the New Church
    10. Rite of Darkness by Cursed Moon
