    My three boys are grown now, but we used to do lots of family vacations by mini-van. We always made sure they had tons of snacks in the car, made break stops about once every three hours (diaper changes, stretching of legs, etc), and would pack a large tote filled with things to keep them occupied (coloring books, etc). As they got older we'd find audiobooks everyone wanted to listen to as a family - the Guardians of Ga'Hoole, Lord of the Rings, Sherlock Holmes, the Hobbit, etc. It was so much fun listening to them get excited or giggle over a particular section of a story. We aren't Disney people, so our trips focused mostly on what the kids could learn from each region we visited and the experiences we took away - like having a buffalo herd walk past our van in North Dakota or listening to wolves howl in the distance while camping in Colorado.

    So I'm glad you did the shameless plug for Tyler's agency! Disney isn't really on my to-do list, but I didn't realize that they do more than just Disney! I'll check them out for next year's travel plans, we're hoping for a few more cruises next year~
    And YES to the 2 extra outfits for kids when traveling! We took our 11 month old son on a cruise to Alaska and while we were in the Airport in Seattle his diaper leaked into his clothes. So I go to change him and mid-change he starts peeing everywhere, including on his new outfit sitting next to him on the changing table... Thankfully we had that back-up of the back-up outfit in the bag and we were able to get him changed and make it to our transfer lol

    2 things to add: (1) traveling with kids/babies, you can bring formula, breast milk, and baby food in any quantity/amount through security with no restrictions as well as ice packs and sealed water bottles for formula
    (2) And if you fly southwest, as Jessica added in text, you can add your lap child on your account at the kiosk and now you can add them yourself when you book online!! 🎉

    First, this comes from a place of love because I watch every single video of yours and have for YEARS!! Please look into the risks of flying with a lap infant.
    The AAP and FAA both recommend you travel with your child in their car seat. It’s infinitely safer for them. In addition to that, it’s impossible to know how your car seat is handled if you check it. Most seats require replacement after minor car accidents where the seat might receive only a slight hit. The car seats are man handled by the airlines if checked. Additionally, renting a car seat at your destination is risky as well. There’s no way to be 100% sure the seat wasn’t in an accident or situation that requires replacement. It’s always best to bring yours, buy new, or rent from a close friend/family you’d trust with your child’s life. You can buy backpack bags to carry through the airport and then just put your child in it and use it for rentals as well!!
    Anyway, I’ll step off my soap box… just so important to keep our babies safe. I greatly appreciate you sharing all the other tips! We actually just booked our first flight for our 1yo and second for our 4yo last night, so I’m adding much of this to our list!

    • @kateraby2419
      @kateraby2419 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Was coming here to say this-we learned to never check our car seats because you know how they handle baggage getting it in the hold. Once when we gate checked a seat before we knew better it was badly cracked at the bottom and since it was dark when we came back we couldn't see and put it back in our car and drove our daughter home in it and didn't notice the bad damage until a few days later. They say even if you are in a small accident tou should replace the car seat and I am sure what the car/seat luggage experiences in the hold being tossed around and smashed can be worse than a minor accident. Also learned that during bad turbulence a baby can fly out of your arms just the way they could if you were holding them in your lap in the car. After that we always bought a seat for our infant. They were snug and secure and less fussy in the car seat. We bought a wheeled carrier that the car seat fit into for transport through the airport.

  • @rrpp5562
    @rrpp5562 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just a note to add, after you checked in and passed security , you can go to the gate check and ask them if there are any empty seats next to you on your flight. If there are, they’ll allow you to bring your car seat on board for your lap child. I’ve done this before with southwest.

    The biggest help we have found with plane travel is buying seats for our littles to have their carseats on the plane. Not only does it keep them safe, but it's the best way to keep them "contained" in a seat they're familiar with. My 8 mo old was quiet the entire trip across the country and slept the majority of the time because he was in his familiar place. Guarantee he wouldn't have stayed calm if I had to hold him the whole time. And bonus - not having to worry about renting carseat or Uber with carseat we weren't familiar with. 😊

    • @AudJ1234
      @AudJ1234 ปีที่แล้ว

      Such a good idea. I am surprised how many parents hold their children on a flight, it’s not safe if the plane has to make an emergency landing. My nephew was always in his car seat in his seat when on a plane.

It really is through experience and trial and error that you learn all this, so I’m glad someone with a platform like yours is sharing all the “secrets”! Traveling with children is rewarding for both the parents and the children, so I’m glad you are making it easier for anyone who wants to start! Did you know that you can go through security with ICE IN YOUR WATER BOTTLE?!!!! All these years I had no idea and the last 2 times we've flown I've filled my bottle with ice, made sure there was no remaining liquid right before going through TSA, and we were good to go!!!!! Friggin game changer for those of us who like drinking cold water

  • @rizzart66

    Totally just hanging out. My only is a junior in college. I still make lists for when we go camping. We have dogs, they go with us and they have their own list. I think one other piece of advice would be to be okay with disrupted routines. Bedtimes won't be like at home, kids may go to bed still in need of a bath, etc. Just roll with it. Do anything to keep them calm. lol

    • @heathers8826
      @heathers8826 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bathtime thing especially. We used to go tent camping with our kids. By the time we were ready to go home a stay in a hotel was much needed just so we could all take showers. Boys don't really care about when they take their next bath so you just have to go with the flow.

    Loved your tips! Also wanted to add for road trips (even for across town lol) we always have a small dollar store barf bucket in the car (basically just a small sand toy bucket). You never know when barf is going to hit and usually it is unexpected so that bucket has come in handy more than once lol. Also when the kids were small I had something I think it was called the potette potty. You could use it as a training potty on the ground (there were disposable absorbent inserts you could buy) if there were no toilets nearby when a potty emergency struck, or if roadside toilets were too gross. Or you could bend the legs out to the side and use it as a potty seat on top of a regular toilet so the little one didnt have to touch the roadside toilet or feel like they were going to fall in. The whole thing folded up compactly for storage in a small bag. It was great!

    We do a lot of road trips down to Disney from MN. Yes we are crazy.... So for a long haul trip even with older kids (I have teenagers now), bring a soccer ball, playground ball, basketball, etc... We also tend to do squats, lunges, burpees, and other things like that when at rest stops. Gets everyones blood pumping!! Even littles can do it! Do races, quick game of tag, or bust out a little dance party. You will have people look at you weird, but we have had people say "That's a great idea!" as well. And your comment about snacks? SPOT on! Even with the teenagers!

    Toddler stroller recs? Just rent one? We put a Disney World trip with Tyler‘s agency for next October but we don’t have a stroller for my almost 3-year-old and I was trying to figure out a good one to travel with that maybe he could nap in comfortably etc.

    I have a small bag with those "day of" packing items. Tooth brush, arm deodorant etc. So I have a tooth brush strictly dedicated to travel lol because I have forgotten my toothbrush etc far too many times 😂

    Just beware that low cost airlines may not accept gate checking and may charge for strollers/car seats as excess baggage even if you have a ticket for the child (if there is more than 2 items to check in for the child or weighs more than the allocated amount of checked baggage). And some low cost airlines won't allow a car seat on board the plane either (especially outside of the USA).

    My daughter is now 7 still has motion sickness even now I always have a full change of clothes for her in my purse and in my car I also have an extra outfit for her and a shirt for myself. We keep two towels and a vomit bucket with air tight lid:) in the car always!

    Perfect timing! My husband and I are wanting to fly to visit friends in December, but our son will be 2.5 months at the time and we have no idea where to begin planning a trip with a baby. 😬

      If you are flying I always recommend that they load the stroller on while you are getting boarded so you have it ready by the time you get off the plane. Super helpful if you have to change flights. Since your little one is so small you could also just strap him to you and have a backpack diaper bag as a carry-on while your stroller is in the regular baggage. Know though, that most airplane baggage handlers are not careful with strollers.

    Which screen protector did Tyler get you for your watch? I’m trying to find one for a series 8 but they all have poor reviews 😂.

    My daughter threw up milk vomit all over my husband, and she had already had a change of clothes (spilled milk all over herself). My poor husband smelled so bad, thankfully, this was the end of the flight.
    Note to self: bring lots of different clothes. Also, don’t give your child milk before a flight (obviously excluding babies breastfeeding and having human milk lol).

    So I bought a seat for my almost two year old and so we'll need to have a car seat for her on the plane. Recommendations? Also I know there is like the CARE thing that clips into the seat belt on the plane...any experience or have you heard any opinions about it?

    Hey Jessica, I’m wondering if you have any tips on travelling with a formula fed 6 month baby. Long haul international flights. Do i have to bring bottles for each feed, warm warm water for formula, cleaning bottles on flight etc. how to make it as efficient/easy as possible?

    OK, I made it through the whole video and don't have (and aren't having) kids. lol But I do have one serious question: As a parent of two, what is your feeling on changing a poopy diaper on a plane seat? I've seen people do it and am appalled each time but maybe there really isn't a better place on a plane to do that. I genuinely don't know. I just know it stinks (literally) having to be stuck on a closed tin can with poopy diaper smell.

    A day of list is a great idea. It always annoys me when I can’t tick them off the main list and I end up highlighting them.

    Jessica, I love the length your hair *looks* at around the 22 minute mark!!! That would be a great shorter hair option if you ever wanted a chop 😊
