Yeah but it is a little bit lame when someone is dominating so hard that they could sit out of the last 2 events or the last event and still win the title. Deciding the title in the water makes for some exciting moments. At the end of the day, it is a sport, and a form of entertainment for the fans. Though I agree the old system made more sense for the winner, this still gives the points leader a huge advantage and then he just has to ice it in the water and claim his crown by beating 1 guy who comes out of the gauntlet.
Always interesting to watch insider knowledge on Trestles crowds and the pecking order. Would be cool to run a gopro and also cam on beach then narrate (overdub) what is actually happening or happened later with each paddle battle. or maybe not I don't know.

Hawaiian surfers do NOT consider themselves as representing the U.S.A. - rather they represent the Island of Hawaii. This is why JJF and other Hawaiian's wear the Hawaiian flag on his Jersey and not the USA flag.
Pro or not they’re no better than anyone else. If they want set waves to themselves they need to go to the secret spots. They should put their ego aside as well they compete to get waves to themselves when out with the rest of us mere mortals they become one of us mere mortals. They make way more money than I do and get surf the best waves in the world regularly.
This is 100% true but imagine if you were practicing to win the biggest basket ball game of the year at a certain court with different floors and different size hoops that was also public. You’d probably try your best to get as met reps in on that specific court as possible so you know how it works. Could be wrong but just my opinion?

Your out on your only day off from your job and some dude is snaking all the set waves, we all know how that can ruin your day. These guys surf there so much they know the wave like the back of their hand. If it’s not comp day respect the lineup and wait you turn like the rest of blue collar hard working folks. It’s the same as if a celebrity goes out in public and expects everyone to get out of their way. Just saying surfing is not about competition anyway it’s about being able to gain some peace of mind in this whacky world.
