      @Tweaky Robin He actually did: "We need a name for the new replicator, a noun that conveys the idea of a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. 'Mimeme' comes from a suitable Greek root, but I want a monosyllable that sounds a bit like 'gene'. I hope my classicist friends will forgive me if I abbreviate mimeme to meme. If it is any consolation, it could alternatively be thought of as being related to 'memory', or to the French word même. It should be pronounced to rhyme with 'cream'. They scrape his lungs so he can breath, it's the worst kind of tortue, and he's died three times there. I have his 500 line testimony, it's really something. Anyway, he's been beyond and back _four times._ The first time he died was a drug overdose. So there's good evidence people live after our bodies give out. However you want to discribe the Entity that's holding us in existence that doesn't die when we do, we know He persists, and so that's better than the potty god you two have turned your lives over to. Your god doesn't guarantee you eternal life, what a shitty god that is. At least with Jesus and the evidence of me and my friend having been beyond and back 7 times total, we make a good case.

    I really loved this interview. As a guy who grew up in Iran under the Islamic Republic and all its Islamic (dogmatic) indoctrinations... This interview was rewarding and affirmed my personal conviction that God is a myth.
    Joe Rogan is an outstanding and very well read and intelligent interviewer. Watching him is always a joy because he's not only like your next door brother, but asks extremely great probing questions from his guests (and comes to the table very well prepared as they say).
    As for the honorable Mr. Dawkins, well...let me just say that he's been a long time hero of mine, and the reason I am proud to be an Aetheist.
    In my native country of Iran (and the Middle East at large)... It is (to this day unfortunately) largely frowned upon if you don't consider yourself a Muslim. But then again, how could I be a Muslim if I never read the Koran and can't pray in Arabic? I have a healthy enough respect for all religions of the world and its people, but it doesn't do much for me personally (at least not until I get evidence otherwise).
    My background is in Computer Science, and although my early schooling in Iran (first through third grade involved going to a Madrasah and getting heavy indoctrination in Islam)... I was lucky enough I guess, to have had parents who immigrated to the United States and opened my eyes and my world to that of Science, Logic, and Rational thought... All of which I ascribe to Mr. Dawkins logic and science ... And he has been a source of great inspiration and wisdom to myself and countless other people I know (from Iran) who are no longer identifying with the Koran or Islam for that matter. I think Mr. Dawkins life work is immensely valuable (especially for the middle East) where time and time again, we have witnessed the brutality of regimes like that of the Islamic Republic of Iran against innocent citizens (not only of Iran, but the rest of the world). I don't think the religiously slanted (biased) people have any idea what the work of Mr. Dawkins means for humanity (not only in terms of freedom from the shackles of religious dogma, but also in terms of hopes for Democracy in Iran, and a departure from an extremely dangerous Theocracy that has never been anything short of a total Dictatorship in my native country of Iran).
    I salute both of these Gentlemen for their show, and it would be an immense honor if I ever had the chance to meet Mr.. Dawkins in my lifetime because his teachings have the potential to free the Middle East and so many countless millions of people who have been suffering from the Oppression of Religious ideologies, influences, punishments, murders, and so much more).

      I had a classmate who was Iranian, and she had come to India to get away from the madrasa's you talk about. I heard her mother talk to my teacher about how she escaped with her child to India in pursuit of a better life and education for her daughter, and she was elated, almost moved to tears to see her daughter's performance improving across the year. It just reminds me of how fortunate some people are to escape from the clutches of religion.
      I read about Iran's story with regards to the Government shifts and it makes me happy to hear that you have learned the truth, not just about Islam but religion as a whole. There is no better religion, for all of them are equally as counter intuitive as the next one.
      Cheers brother, have a good one and stay safe :)

However, I would not take Dawkins as the ultimate authority when it comes to life beyond our physical universe. @@ericbooth3393 Stop being ridiculous. No one should be worshipping any person but psychedelics are chemicals that alter your perception of reality. Belief in "worlds beyond our own" is just as much mumbo jumbo woo woo nuttery as believing in Jesus resurrecting people and walking on water. There's no reason at all to believe that there is anything but our physical universe. The brain is incredibly susceptible to deception, ESPECIALLY while on drugs. For me, that's the whole point of psychedelics - deceiving my brain into seeing things differently or things that aren't there at all, and altering my thought patterns. Problems arise when the user is unable to distinguish these delusions from actual reality.
      And before you tell me to shut up unless I've experienced them, I have tried a few psychedelics. But they are nothing more than a bit of mind-altering substances that I enjoyed with my friends.

    • @ericbooth3393
      @ericbooth3393 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Happytown It’s only “Mumbo jumbo” to you because you haven’t seen it with your own eyes. The first time I ever ate Psilocybin mushrooms I bought 10 grams off a friend, and ate 8 alone in my room on a Saturday night. I walked into that experience an Atheist who would’ve written the exact same comment you just wrote, and by the end of that experience I was a different man. The things I saw and heard to me, could be explained by one of two things; either it was all in my head or I had an experience that the conscious mind is not normally incapable of having. Trust me, I have considered that my experiences are possibly nothing but a figment if my imagination but at the same time, I am like 95% sure they weren’t. I whole heartedly believe that humans are arrogant, egotistical creatures and we’re stuck in the reality we perceive. But as time goes on it’s pretty clear that we don’t really know what is going on in this physical universe on our planet, let alone within the solar system or the entire universe. We only know what we are capable of detecting. Somewhere down the line we forgot how to have faith. Isaac Newton devoted his life to the sciences he perceived but in the end he chose to believe in god because he couldn’t even fathom the idea that there wasn’t a creator of everything we see now. It’s all just so perfect. I hope you get to a point in your life where you are willing to open your mind a little. I used to be just like you. I appreciate the response.

    • @monkegames6133
      @monkegames6133 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@ericbooth3393 This just proves his point that the human brain is highly susceptible to deception. I felt many "other-worldy" experiences that would really make someone question reality but then you realize that there's an exact reason for that - psychedelics. They simply mess with your brain in such a way that makes you see and feel crazy stuff. Also, saying that there are other worlds or dimensions and what not just because we "don't know" is exactly what religions do. Deal with it, you live while you're alive - after that there's nothing to support your consciousness (aka brain) and you simply don't exist anymore.
      Now, personally I believe in reincarnation but not the one that everyone is familiar with. You see, when you die you can't experience time anymore - there are no instruments to perceive it and therefore billions of years are 0 seconds. As soon as you die you fast forward to the next life form of your atoms (or you relive your life, if the universe repeats itself).
      Okay I got carried out but my point is: life is physical and the soul doesn't exist

People who use psychedelics always make arguments like this as if they are providing some brilliant piece of evidence that will change peoples mind, but the reality is anyone who has studied a bit of science knows that somebodies subjective experience under the influence of a drug isn't very good evidence to prove the existence of an aftlerlife/supernatural/immaterial.

      A theist by definition believes in a higher power, namely a God or Gods. Alternatively and atheist would by definition say their is no God or any God. To dismiss one God as false while holding to another existing does not make you atheist, it makes you logically consistent by differentiating the different truth claims of one God or another. It’s just dishonest to say everyone is atheist when it comes to most Gods. It’s not even a logically consistent argument.

      @@ethanpierce8567 Your mistake is that you don't know what an atheist is. An Atheist is someone who doesn't believe a god exist and not someone who says there is no god. There is a huge difference in there. Do you believe in Santa Claus or pixie creating universes? No, neither do I. Both you and me don't believe in the same amount of gods ad infinitum. The difference is that you believe in one out of the infinite man made gods. Basically to sum it up, I don't believe infinitum and you don't believe infinitum - 1 which still makes you an Atheist , same as me. We have more in commom in our disbelieves than you give credit for.

    • @ethanpierce8567
      @ethanpierce8567 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Sabin by definition, an atheist does not believe in the existence of ANY God, any higher being. A theist simply believes in a higher being, a deity, a God or Gods. Atheisms fundamental truth claim is that no such higher being exists. A theist’s central truth claim is that some higher being does exist. To make a claim that any deity exist means you cannot be an atheist by definition. It is silly and dishonest to argue otherwise.
      Definitions:
      “Atheism: a person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods.”
      “Theism: belief in the existence of a god or gods, especially belief in one god as creator of the universe, intervening in it and sustaining a personal relation to his creatures.”

It has the problem of being within a few generations of living memory, it only worked in the beginning because it appealed to a vulnerability of the budding American mind... How existentially crushing the 1800s expansion of America and industrialising world must have been, it made people feel like their generation was somehow as special as the supposed biblical times... And here we are. No more special than ever. More transparently less spiritually significant than ever. It sucks but it's real. Afterwards, during the book signing, I saw an opportunity to ask him a question and I asked him if he would ever appear on the Joe Rogan Experience again. He requested not to take selfies due to timekeeping reasons and the number of people that wanted to get a signature.
