The battle has a really fascinating story, imma tell it real quick: The Hungarian nobility did not come to an aggreement of what they should do about the siege. The king went for a "hunt" in Vienna (he fled from the kingdom). So János Hunyadi a hungarian noble (some say he was of romanian origin, some say cuman, he still recognised himself as a hungarian noble; he was a fearsome fighter and pretty much the devil to ottomans) came to the defenders aid, breaking through the naval blockade of the ottomans. The crusader forces of Europe camped in the other side of the river. The ottomans bombarded the settlement pretty much to the ground, but hungarians pepared their defences (and serbs and croatians as well naturally). The ottomans charged the hungarian lines, it was a bloody battle, they almost won, but the hungarians strenghtened themselves and pushed back the ottomans. Now here comes the legend of a man named Dugovics Titusz, who when an ottoman soldier got to a bastion with a flag, sacrificed himself to throw him off (if you search his name, you come to one of the most legendary paintings in Hungary). It is a legend (most likely not true), but still a great one. So, then the next day the crusader forces charged through the river (wich was not the plan). They held the ottomans and the defenders of the castle charged out and captured or disabled the ottoman cannons. When night came the sultan was nowhere to be found.

@@Kenzie1-l1n The Ottomans basically hit their hard logistical limits by his time. To put it in perspective - it's both shorter and easier journey from _Paris_ to Vienna than from Constantinopole. (It's high credit to Ottoman organisational and logistical abilities that they could throw such large armies that far even twice, really.) Didn't particularly help that by that period the European powers were also rapidly evolving into what historians like to call "Early Modern war-states" ofc.
So, Apollo, you asked how in Middle ages did you show that you are surrendering or deflecting to the enemy and not that you are charging them? Well, the answer is simple-you turn your spear or lance upside down. It may look like you are about to throw spear, but throwing spears was rather not used in medieval Europe, so it was generally the way in middle ages that you are showing your surrender or sometimes the deflecting. Also, yes, sometimes the throwing of the banner was the way to show deflecting, but it was very rarely shown as banners are still insignia of your unit and you and your companions in deflecting are still attached to it.
