21:40 It would be nice to put a timestamp in the description to skip your spoilers for "Abducted in Plain Sight": 26:53

As a guy living in Montréal I really enjoyed « Don’t f*ck with Cats » about a group of people tracking an animal torturer who would turn out to be a reknowned murderer

Seconded for DFWC! Hard to watch for certain scenes but it’s great internet sleuthing.

The Imposter still one of my favs...and the actual footage makes it even better and so much more insane the family went with it( he even continued to pull the same stunt for years and get caught...now i think he chilled and has like 5 kids)

Man I have the same obsession with true crime docs, great list Jeff! I've seen all of these and can second your recs. See also Capturing the Friedmans, Mommy Dead and Dearest, The Keepers, Great Photo Lovely Life, Beware the Slenderman, McMillions, there are too many great ones to list.

@JeffRauseo I worked on the nightmare! (I’m in the credits and have an IMDb page for verification lol)Well just on the reenactments, not the interviews. So awesome you mentioned it and said how scary it was. It was quite the experience to be on set for those scenes. Everything I’ve ever read about it said how it might be the scariest “horror doc” ever made. It’s very cool to have been a part of that. I was just the Key Set PA, but was in on every scene. Great experience. The director was great too. He also did a doc on the shining called Room 237. Rodney Ascher.

I’m a crime doc junkie and, although I think I’ve seen all of the docs you mentioned, watching this is making me want to revisit several of the films on your list that I haven’t seen in years. “Abducted in Plain Sight” was mind-boggling to say the least. I’ll never forget all of the memes that circulated on Facebook after it was first released on Netflix. Super sad and infuriating.

There is a short 30minute sequel to Tickled, called The Tickle King, which is a must watch after the documentary. It covers the release of Tickled and the subject of that film trying to thwart the movies release and the credibility of David Ferrier.

The Johnny Gosh case has A LOT of documentaries somewhat tied to it that has "disappeared", one of them is called 'Conspiracy of Silence' and to this day there's only parts of the doc available, it was pulled out last minute from airing on Discovery by judicial means so, it's not far-fetch at all to think that is on purpose hard to find 'Who took Johnny'.

I think more people should watch The Keepers. It’s very interesting but disturbing. It revolves around a Catholic school and an evil Priest who abuses many girls. It also includes the story of a nun who taught at the school and was found murdered. People think the priest had something to do with it because she knew and was trying to help the students. It’s very creepy and sheds a lot of light on the lengths gone to cover up the crimes of the certain groups. If you can handle it, I highly recommend.

Amazing video. I'll have to check these out. The nature v nurture debate is fascinating and is a large chunk of all these kind of cases too. I really enjoy the 7up documentaries where they chose 7 year olds specifically from different class/background and observed nature v nurture, among other things. I also really enjoyed growing up in the 90s watching Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack.

I absolutely am a documentary junkie, doesn't matter if it's true crime, music, nature, pop culture or what have you. If it's a documentary, I'm down to watch it. Having said that, "Abducted in Plain Sight" is the ONLY doc that affected me in a truly visceral way. I lost count of how many times I paused it and ended up pacing back and forth in my living room, muttering "what the fuck" over and over.

Unfortunately, it's not that simple with Kanopy. Your local library has to be a participating part of the thing. I just watched, and enjoyed The Nightmare, and your synopsis of The Imposter sounds familiar. I will now watch the rest of your upload, thanks.

Talking about sleep paralysis, I just saw a movie last night called "Dear David". It is more of a paranormal movie, but it did have a few sleep paralysis scenes that were creepie as hell. Like where he is being dragged on the floor and he's wide awake, but can't move.
I've had a couple of paralysis dreams where I know I'm wide awake, but for the life of me I just can't get up. I try with all my energy, and it feels like I'm glued to the bed. Scary and very fustrating at the same time. Like someone injected you with morphine.

Sleep paralysis is scary. In Newfoundland Canada they call it getting hagged, because so many people have a shared experience of seeing an old witch (or an old hag). It’s happened to be twice, both times I saw a freaky smiling man in my bedroom. Will check out that doc for sure

Since you mentioned the original book... here's my update.
More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark: For Gen X
It's 4am, you haven't slept all night, constantly going back to the bathroom as soon as you get out. You are dreaming of In the Mouth of Madness when you jolt awake to your 6am alarm. Finally, some relief, maybe it has stopped! Hurriedly, you dress, you have to be out the door in 30 minutes. But the clock ticks by... you make frantic phone calls... the answers are all the same... your ride isn't coming and you have to reschedule your colonoscopy.
They've sent another prescription for the prep to your pharmacy, good luck next time.

On Vudu (now Fandango At Home) there's a cool Documentary called The American Scream. It's about families in a neighborhood here in Massachusetts, in which the people in the neighborhood spend all year preparing haunted houses for Halloween. They all have a story about why they spend the entire calendar year for one night.

The filmmakers of Who Took Johnny where really irresponsible. They should have done real journalism on that issue if they want to cover it. .... On the other hand, Abducted in Plain Sight feels like it is in another universe. :(

My opinion on missing in plain sight is that the mom and dad pretend they got conned by the guy but from what I could see you were not suspicious about this man coming in your house taking your daughter places alone sleeping in the same bed with her they both had a thing for him the mother was definitely loved with him What he did to the father in the car was so he could have something on him he kind of made the situation to his advantage having some blackmailed parents with but they all wanted him and they all liked him and he was just like Jeffrey Epstein but they were not manipulating they were not stupid Created relationships with them so in their mind they felt he was coming around because he was interested in them the mom and the dad and I think they didn’t really care what he did was a little girl because I feel they were obsessed with him and sick
