I’m glad that you’ve chosen a major you want to do and genuinely feel passionate about! Everyone always has opinions on something. Whatever major someone chooses, people will say “oh that’s useless” or “that’s easy” or like “how will you get a job”. It makes me mad that people don’t mind their own business. I’d rather study something i’m passionate about and will do well in, instead of being pressured into doing something that will please other people. Anyway thx for coming to my ted talk

i really felt this, i pressured myself to try to get into law school just because it’s a well paid profession, two days before the school applications closed i said “you know what fuck this” and i chose another major which i thinks it’s right for me
i totally agree with you. I had people ask me if i chose my major because it was easy. i had to tell them 1. no i didn't choose the easy route, i chose the route I love and 2. just because you're studying what you love, that doesn't mean it's easy.
kc I agree, like yeah obviously you should have a rough idea with what you can do with your degree but you shouldn’t let people tell you to change your subject because “it doesn’t have a lot of jobs” or whatever. You want to do psychology- do psychology, if you want to do journalism- do journalism, etc. At the end of the day, you don’t want to do a degree in something you don’t like for years as that’s just going to make you miserable. Also, idk if Hannah will even see this (probably not) but marketing is actually a really good degree to get and a lot of places ask for marketing.
I totally get what you mean! I majored in fashion merchandising and got SO much shit from people talking down on it and acting like it was a joke of a major but it was 100% the right decision. I ended up landing a full time job in NYC within two months of graduation and couldn't be happier!! Always follow your passions and it'll lead you where you're meant to be!

That’s my major too! I graduate in May and I live in NYC. People have given me so much shit about my major but I’m so happy with my choice
I’m a marketing student in Scotland and I find it so strange that people are telling you you won’t have a stable job and it’s a waste of time. Marketing is such a massive industry across the world you can literally go anywhere!
I know that's so weird. I haven't gotten into the video yet, but reading your comment I thought "wtf????" It doesn't make sense to me that people would tell her she wouldn't have a stable job with that degree - marketing would get you a job in any role in the business industry!!!

Your rant reminded me of something Jim Carrey said when he did a commencement speech. He told a story about his dad who lost his job and he said "you can fail at what you DON'T want so you might as well take a chance on what you love". It's so true, and I'm glad you're finally where you want to be in your major :)

I’m a senior in high school and I’m debating internally with what I wanna do in University and after watching this vlog it’s made me really wanna think about what I wanna do and not what will make other people happy

I’m a junior in college and my majors business admin with sales management! I took 18 credits the past 4 semesters and can graduate a semester early now! If I were you I’d take 2 summer courses and 5 classes next semester! It saves you a ton of money and time :) it’s saving me $26k 😭 you’re doing great girl keep working hard 💓

Totally felt the same relief you did once I changed from nursing & health science to Communication! I'm a creative person as well and being in the world of social media is so interesting to me (and fun!) that I finally decided to switch last spring after feeling so depressed for TWO years in the major I originally was in. There is such a demand for what I want to do and it excites me now to go to class or sign up for new ones each semester! My parents were also my 'outside people' because they want me to make a shit ton of money which I understand (at the same time I feel like they wanted bragging rights they could post about on Facebook .-. ), but I wasn't happy and it took a toll on my mental health GREATLY. But now that I've switched without listening to what they want me to do.. I'm so happy and in a much better place at my University so that's all that matters.

really needed that rant, i’m a senior in high school trying to decide what to do. i just changed my mind on both school and major after already committing, and i have so many people trying to tell me what to do, that it just stresses me out. you saying that it’s what you want to do for the rest of your life really opened my eyes to make the decision i want to, and not what others want me to.

Omg your rant really resonated with me! Last semester I changed my major from nursing to business with a concentration in sports management. I had so many people encouraging me to stay with nursing, but that's just cuz I am familiar with that setting. Working in the sports field is my dream come true and I am so excited that I switched majors! Congrats on your major change!

I get why people advise us to go here and not there, "oh you'll be unemployed if you go there" but at the end of the day, it's my life and I'm going to choose what I like, what I want, what makes me happy and it might not be the ideal job or area for you but it is for me and that's what matters. I really appreciated that rant at the end of the video. It needed to be said. I am also interested in marketing, especially as a career, but my school does not offer it as a major which is really disappointing but something I knew coming into it so it’s fine. But choosing other majors that I enjoyed personally has been difficult because of outside people’s opinions. I think you’re exactly right in saying that it’s discouraging because I found myself wanting to change my majors for other things and for other people besides myself who has to do the emotional, physical, and mental labor. So we’re doing what makes us happy in 2020!!
I’m in 18 credit hours this semester too and let me tell you it’s A LOT

I feel the same way as you do. I changed my major halfway through university and I'm gonna have to make up that extra year in order to get all of my prerequisites but I'm so much happier now, in a major I'm passionate about, and I'm excited about my future career. Yes, I have to do a fifth year and pay more money but in the end, it's worth it. So happy you've come to this realization and set yourself up for success!

Personally, I just graduated college and am currently in a weird in-between phase where I’m working retail in the meantime as I look for a career in my field and navigate everything that goes with that, so I think your rant has given me so much peace and inspired me so much to just go after the life I want! Literally such a similar story. I’ve changed my major 3 times and let people talk me out of graphic design, which is what I thought I’d major in at first, but didn’t because it’s an ~art degree~ 🙄. Couldn’t agree more in majoring in what you want! You’ll be happier so much happier! I used to dread school but now I’m excited to go. Amen sister!! I am also in my junior year of university and so far every year I have been a different major. I went in to my first year doing something stable, but also something that I really didn't want to do just because people were telling me that the degree I actually wanted was stupid and that I would never find a job. The second year I was in a different field that I liked better but still wasn't passionate about because I listened to people AGAIN! Now I am pursuing the degree that I really wanted from the beginning and I couldn't be happier. It really truly makes a difference in your university experience when you are studying something that actually interests you and that you are passionate about.

i SO needed to hear this. im a senior in high school and i went from being interested in law to social work to nursing and i hated that i would question myself and ask and assure myself that this is what i wanted. turns out, IT WASNT! and just like you I talked to people who tried to tell me what field I’d be good in and then i looked into psychology which is something I’ve always been interested in, I found a career that always looked cool to me seeing that I’m around the people who are in that field as they have helped me through my high school career. when I told myself this could be what I want I looked at the classes I would be taking and now I’m actually excited to go to college! people would tell me they could see me being an ultrasound tech or an accountant and being the person I am who listens to people’s feedback I looked into them and it didn’t interest me AT ALL. since I decided on going into psych I haven’t questioned myself one bit, I haven’t had the urge/want to look into any other careers, etc. your rant gave me the reassurance that what I did was the right thing and I’m so glad you finally found your calling! ❤️ sorry not sorry this is long 🤣

I’m in my second semester as a sophomore in college, started as a nursing major and I just decided to make the switch 5 days ago to double major in business and communications !! I was so scared to change it because nursing is so reliable and it made people so proud but I was like why the hell would I waste my life in a career that I’m not even passionate about? I relate so much to your rant at the end of the vid! I’m a psych major and I heard so often that it’s useless, the market is oversaturated, I’ll never get a job blah blah blah. And I listened to that for so long but eventually I came to my senses and was like ya know what, this is a subject I genuinely love and have actual interest in. I’m not about to collect tens of thousands of dollars of debt in something I have absolutely no interest in just because I could potentially earn more. Keep doing your thing girl; like you said, the only person who’s gonna live your life is you ❤️

Girl, I totally relate. This semester i went to one week of my journalism classes, hated all of them and dropped all of them and switched my major to English, something I’m actually passionate about.
