I Took a 90s Themed Party Cruise - (With Unlimited Drinks)

  • I’ve just disembarked a 3 night 90s themed cruise where we saw and did things that would be unthinkable on any other mainstream cruise. I originally booked this cruise way back in 2019, for years I’d promised my friends this amazed party filled with 90s bands and sunshine and fancy dress.
I’d bought 5 first timer cruisers on the cruise so I was feeling nervous, I hoped that they would enjoy it but there was a very real risk that this crazy cruise night put them off cruising for life. This was a very busy cruise and not a normal cruising experience, at all.

I’m someone who has never and still doesn’t have any desire to cruise- but your channel is one of my number one comfort watches and just wanted to say as a disabled person the extent to which you make note of accessibility in near every video is SO appreciated. It should be the standard for reviewers of any kind but unfortunately isn’t, so it’s always really nice to see 🥰

Emma, I've been on that ship twice when it was the Legend of the Seas. The question you ask at 3:19 is a recess for the door handle to prevent damage to the wall from the handle when the door is opened all the way. I think it also allows the door to open as wide as possible. As an American I don't know any of those bands but sounds like you had a great time. Love the Naughties designation for the 2000's.

That looked like a fun cruise! I remember the 90's. I graduated in 2000. Fun decade. As for the first decade of the 2000s, here in the States in general I think we've settled on the "aughts," which mirrors what we referred to the first decade of the 20th century as well. I remember as a kid hearing old timers referring to dates in the beginning of the 20th century as "back in aught 5..." or some such phrasing.

    • @bbcovault

The spelling "Naughties" in the video led me to to a research tangent. This sounded like a derivative of the word Naughty which lead me to wonder who were all these naughty people in Britain from 2000 to 2009 and why hadn't I heard about them here in the US? LOL! Wiktionary sums it up well though. Informal etymology of naughties is bad people or things. Formal etymology is first decade of a century. Alternative spelling is noughties. Wikipedia says that alternative spelling is proper British spelling. Derives from noughts = 00. Wikipedia also says aughts has been used to refer to the first decade of a century in the US and naughties probably derived from that here. It has never been in widespread use here. I am 57 and this is the first time I have even heard of this topic. Probably some cross use of both in US and Britain. I think most in the US just take 2000's to be the first decade of this century as recent as that was. "naughties" does sound a lot more fun.

Went on an Australian P&O operated cruise in 2006, the casino was tiny but from memory there was a TAB (bookies) on board that was very busy. The casino on a royal carribean cruise I went on out of Australia was bigger than the P&O cruise. If you plan to cruise out of Australia, pick Royal Caribbean over the P&O cruises, the vibe on Royal Caribbean was heaps better than on the P&O cruises, I enjoyed it way more.

    Looks like awesome fun!
I go on a metal music cruise every year, 70,000 Tons of Metal, and in some ways it's quite similar. It's on a Royal ship and they kept the Windjammer buffet open until at least 2 or 3 am like your pizza-place,, but they closed the buffet at around dinner-time which was weird. The pizza on ours was 24 hours as far as I could tell (I'm used to that from my Carnival cruises).
There's no free alcohol on board, though: it's probably the biggest-drinking cruise in the world and on its first year when they offered drink packages, they ran completely out of beer by the end of the second day. (!) Nowadays they stock extra beer in any vacant cabins that are available.
As is standard for U.S. cruises we had to be up and out by 8:30 am and off the ship by around 10 - 10:30. It'd be truly awesome if we could linger onboard until 2:30 because there are 60 bands on 4 stages, and each band performs twice...with some sets ending at around 6 am! Debark day tends to be pretty grueling.....

As for Australian cruises, I think you would really enjoy one - we usually have 3 sorts of cruises out of the east coast ports - Australian cruises, mostly to the Queensland/Great Barrier Reef ports. New Zealand cruises (beautiful spot!!!) and South Pacific cruises. The prime cruising season is in our summer, which might allow you to escape the northern hemisphere winter :)
And as for Australian gamblers, we do have some gambling issues with large licensed clubs having thousands of electronic poker machines... a real problem in some areas. I personally am not a fan of casinos or pokie machines etc but some people love to spend all their time and money in there.

Because you were curious, Emma, I did some research into P&O Australia's cruise ship casino sizes.
The casino offers blackjack, roulette, two kinds of poker, scratchies and bingo.
I can't find an easy size guide, but on the Pacific Explorer, the casino is on the lifeboat deck, the full width of the ship and two & a half lifeboats long. The big spiral staircase is smack in the middle of it.
On the two new ships, the Pacific Encounter and the Pacific Adventure, the casino is the full width and two and a bit lifeboats long again. The same length as a specialty restaurant.

Having finally caught up with this very busy video where I learned that Emma fell into a bar after maybe one, or two, or three, of the blue or green drinks. Sounded like a little of Emma down the rabbit hole compared to her usual cruise. She even had her own Mad Hatter/Slash (guitar included). Cookies were had, Pepsi was found, and late night pizza was noshed. Friends will cruise again so a pretty solid success.

As an Australian cruiser neither my husband or I are gamblers at all. I would prefer to watch paint dry than to gamble. We have only ever cruised on American ships from Australia and the casinos are always very empty and a waste of space but maybe it’s different on the Australian based ship lines 🤷‍♀️

Casinos aren't so special in Australia because 90% of pubs and larger clubs have poker machines (pokies) and it makes a large part of their profit. Think it's more a small proportion gambling a lot, than everyone being a big gambler
But sports betting, horses, dogs and the lotto are also pretty popular

Generally I only drink beer so I'm pretty easy to please. Hard alcohol gives me a bad next day and all it takes is one bad day on a moving ship to learn to watch the amount to drink!!
I would have to have brand Coke or Pepsi though.

As someone who will probably never be able to book a Marella cruise (I watched a video from another youtuber, unfortunately can't remember who it was, and he tried to book a Marella cruise as a non-Brit; spoiler: impossible!) and thus will never be able to see for myself why and how their shows are so great, I do wonder though: I've been on Royal Caribbean, on Holland America, on AIDA, on MSC, on Norwegian, and on Pullmantur. And I can honestly say that nobody does shows better than MSC. They are definitely not my favorite cruise line, but their shows are unrivaled. The costumes, the variety, the amount of dancers and performers on stage, the voices, the acrobatics, etc - everything is just mind-boggling amazing. (And I've been to Cirque du Soleil & similar shows and I think the bar for the MSC shows is almost the same.) Which is why I want to know from someone who has been to both (preferrably pre-COVID) - how does Marella and MSC compare?
