They put Bi Han OVER in this movie. Even when Scorpion came back to fight him, he still needed Cole to back him up to fight Bi Han. Dude was a straight savage.
In Bi Hans defense he did beat scorpion twice (mythologies) before getting killed.

Yep, far better movie in characters and directing. There was promise in the beginning but it all went down hill after the scorpion/sub-zero scene. You can tell that this movie had a newbie director.

You’re so right about the goro part. Genuinely a bad scene, goro was again a mindless brute( reiki suffered the same fate), his strength was gimped, and he lost to a nobody. Also the wife and daughter were so calm for seeing a literal monster, who on earth would attack him with a ax?
Everybody reacted to otherworldly shit so damn strangely in this movie like fighting a giant reptile in a garage and Kano ripping its heart out was normal for some reason

Ya I laughed a lot and whoaed a lot at the fatalities but I was still like damn... I dunno about this. This is a prequel to the next movies coming up but still, it was just okay I guess...? I mean don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it but since I love MK so much, I was still kind of disappointed. Wasn’t horrible. Wasn’t amazing. It was alright for a prequel movie
@Capricxrn if you want to get invested into a story....then it kind of is. Plot drives characters, and without giving the character's actual goals they need to accomplish ( i.e. the plot) what's the point?
@Capricxrn style over substance is fine. I just think movies like this need a decent plot to assist in audience engagement. Idk Mortal Kombat was never known for it's gripping storytelling, but damn...I just feel there was nothing engaging besides the action set pieces...which is alright for summer blockbusters. I loved the hell out of Godzilla vs Kong for being a dumb action movie, and the plot for that movie was horrible tbh. I guess it's because Kong/Gojira are characters we can sympathize/empathize with while Cole Yung, the main protag, is a Gary Stu. So I concur plot ain't everything, but if the plot is weak, the characters are weak, then after 2 weeks you're going to forget about this movie. sorry for the rant...i'm trying to make my own comics so I tend to like talking about this sort o stuff.
If Scorpion needed help defeating Sub Zero, Jax would have been the better teammate since they both have a settle to score with him.

I felt like Raiden sacrificed Kung loa on purpose only too protect cole then going to say he can't interfere but interfered too help cole but not Kung loa I didn't like that.

Here's what I want to see in the second movie
1. Shang Tsung kills Cole Young
2. Shang Tsung revives Goro, and Kabal as revenants and creates another Mileena from the flesh pits
3. Introduce Kitana, Shao Kahn, Kuai Liang, Smoke, Rain, Cyrax, and Sektor.
4. Have either Lui Kang or Johnny Cage as the main protagonist
5. Have Shang Tsung resurrect Kano as a Cyborg ( not Cyber Lin Quei type Cyborg but you otherwise know what I mean)
6. Have Shang Tsung revive Bi Han as Noob Saibot. Basically I would have Shang Tsung take Quan Chi's place as a whole because WB has shown that they hate Quan Chi so might as well get rid of him so they don't ruin him any further.

Kabal was the best costume
It really sucks that it’s not available in MK11, it’s one of the best looks he’s ever had right next to his Klassic and they are not in MK11 except for the Klassic mask but that’s just the mask while the skin and movie skin are not in the game. Kabal desperately needs some new skins if they’re supposedly still supporting MK11.
So basically an OC takes all the spotlight.
And is a Gary Stu at that.
Sure, the movie does have some flaws but I would consider him to be the only bad thing that this movie has, because the rest of the movie is great and this guy just feels out of place.

Fair review. You got a lot of people claiming this movie was the worst thing to happen to mk like annihilation and conquest didn’t exist. For an R rated movie I feel like it played it safe in the violence department (kung lao’s fatality being the exception). Also I hope in the next film they have less group fights and focus more on the 1v1 aspects and not cut between so much between fights.
Movie could’ve been 8/10 if they left Cole Young out.
The script gave him no character, no growth, and no charisma. Only thing I can tell you about this dude is he loves his family which yeah no shit, everyone loves their family.

My girl Nitara got jobbed out harder than Maven on Sunday Night Heat. She probably had like 5 minutes of screen time and Kung Lao murdered her with an admittedly awesome-looking fatality.
Cole Young being the main character was my biggest problem with this film. This film should have been more about the established characters. It felt like a Cole Young featuring Mortal Kombat movie.
Bad things in the movie

3.Kong Lao was a jobber
4.Sonya Blade was a underdog
5.Kano was playing Johnny Cage's role

The movie would have been better off being a Netflix series instead of a movie cause the fighting part were great but the story was (Horrendous)

Movie was RUSHED! Sonya Blade, Kabal, and Kano were definitely Best parts of the movie. Story and flow was everywhere. The fatalities were on point but that cost us a good storyline. It still ended up being the Scorpion vs Sub Zero story as always. Cole Young was a bad idea without him being someone recognizable from the games (i.e. Takeda, Kobra, Taven). Second best video game HOLLYWOOD remixed movie though.
An easy fix to the Goro/Cole fight scene. Goro dispatches a Shokan warrior to fight Cole. A random Shokan jobber makes a lot more sense with what we saw in that fight;. Otherwise, I liked most of what I saw in the movie.
This movie had potential, they dropped the ball massively imo. I do think they could rebound, it's not that bad and you are right though this has nothing on MK 95. I think it would be amazing if in the next movie they showed Bi-Han raising Kuai Liang and being confronted by Quan Chi and being told that if he did not kill Hanzo and his family and fight for out world that Kuai along with his family would be killed, and Bi-Han would be in a gray area looking for hanzo but also staying true to his good nature. Although it would have been much better if Cole Young turned out to be Kuai Liang🤦🏾♂️, missed opportunity but hey fuck it. Hopefully once they see the complaints they'll fix it.

I hated Goro's portrayal. He looked great but having him do the job just to push Cole really felt like split punch from Johnny cage to me. Also, Shokan are known to be very honourable, I don't believe Prince Goro would even consider hurting Cole's wife and child.
And as for Bi-Han, why was he portrayed as being completely evil???? Bi-Han actually stopped Shinnok to save Earthrealm before, but here he's just a generic evil guy 😢
I definitely agree that there are more pros then cons to this MK film, but it just sucks that the cons are frustrating. Hopefully the sequel does a better job of correcting what the first didn’t achieve. Overall I still like this movie.

Personally, I’m fine with Raiden because I can accept that he was just a different interpretation of him. My big issue with the movie was just the pacing. They crammed SO much into this movie to the point where even I, someone that knows a lot about the lore, got a little lost at certain points. I also think they can dial back a little bit on some of the campiness of the characters. Like in general I think some of the line deliveries from a lot of the actors needed some polishing. But hopefully with a bigger budget & some openness to criticism they can fix all of those problems in the sequel

Instead of a movie sequel, they need to seriously make it a tv series. It was a chore trying to get through this movie with it's awful directing. The fight scenes were decent though.

Raiden did his thing in THIS. Chris Lambert did too back in the day, but his character was written differently, as well...So there’s that. Cole was needed to bring back Scorpion in order to help defeat Sub-Zero, otherwise, the Outworlders would have surely won before the tournament even started. That was a good added angle btw!
Cole Young was the problem, in the literal sense.
I had a big problem with the pacing so a series would have made more time to flesh it all out, Cole wasn't even needed until he got a freaking Zenkai boost and even then they could have done something way better, also felt like they should have killed his family to draw a parallel to Hanzo and give Cole more of a reason to fight instead of the power of love moment we got. Just this guys humble opinion.
Ok so I just finished the movie and I haven’t watched this yet but I want to say my initial thoughts.
First off, this movie freaking sucked dude, not only was there no tournament, but what the hell was Kung Lao’s death? When could Shang Tsung pull people toward him like he was Quan Chi? I mean I guess that was fine but still everyone just stood and watched as he got his soul ripped out and then Raiden’s like “I’m not allowed to interfere” but then interferes to give Cole the Kunai and then LAUGHS when Cole brings it up as if he didn’t just let his beloved disciple die. Also since Shang Tsung completely disobeyed the rules of Mortal Kombat, not only does that disqualify Outworld giving Earthrealm the win stopping their 9 win streak, that should’ve given Raiden his clearance to interfere as well. The only good thing to come from this movie was the gore, the kills and fights were pretty dope, aside the fact that some nobody wannabe mma fighter killed the literal champion of Outworld of 9 wins in the past few CENTURIES. I had high hopes for this movie but once they introduced some new guy and the dragon mark things, this movie was doomed. Should’ve stuck with the material they had in the plethora of games and comics at their disposal. They ruined so many of the characters, to give you an idea, Kano was literally the best character, and the problem with that is that they made him likable, he was hilarious but Kano should not be a likable character. The OG movie was so much better

But all of it is still better than Annihilation

I agree with you wholeheartedly this would have been better as a series. But it does seem that we will get a sequel at the way that this movie ended. Also like to add like none of the actors are like A tier here in America. So the threat of people being killed off actually does seem real.

Can you save this movie by rebooking it fightersden? Goro losing to Cole Young and his family with zero build up was a terrible move.
Killing of Kung Lao and making Raiden a bitch also needs rebooking.
Just send Kabal to fight Cole Young and Goro to fight Liu Kang and Kung Lao at the same time. Liu Kang has never fought Goro in any of the movie continuities despite Liu Kang being destined to be the mortal kombat champ. Makes no sense. I also think that with all the history Goro has with The Great Kung Lao, him fighting to the two would and Liu Kang killing him with the fire dragon at the end is narrative friendly.
You forgot the biggest con of them all, no Johnny Cage.
I prefer the 1995 over this . The only good part was Scorpion and Sub-Zero
- they had bi-han talking Japanese and the lin kuei are Chinese ninjas
- reiko is the general of shao khans army he is also sinister and tactile, none of that was portrayed, he is supposed to look like a evil tom cruise or david becham
- raiden is supposed to be 7ft tall, wise and helpful, they portrayed him horribly, lui kang had raidens personality wtf
- kung lao, bi-han and kano were acted perfectly
- nitara and mileena were wasted and didnt look half as beautiful as they should have, the whole point is they are beautiful abominations
- no kitana or johnny cage
- scorpions "Get over here" was lack luster
I will say since this is a set up movie and Liu Kang lost Kung Lao he need to defeat Shang Tsung in the tournament since he killed Kung Lao.

Man oh man...
Although I do like the 1995 movie, I think "Scorpion's Revenge" was better, but I did like the new movie too. Although I would've rewritten it so that Cole was Cage, replace Mileena with Tanya (avoiding the race swap controversy entirely and save her for a fight with Kitana in the sequel) also would've had Kung Lao be the one to kill Goro, then Shang Tsung kills him. Liu Kang tries to avenge him, but almost loses to Shang, only for Raiden to finally intervene and kick Shang's ass back to Outworld, so Liu Kang can have a proper rematch with Shang in the tournament, for the sequel. I also would've given Reiko at least one or two lines of dialogue.

To me, it was way too slow in the build up considering what it was based on. The 95 one had fights and the tournament as the focal point. This one was just...meh. Though I did like the fatalities and Scorpion’s fight with Sub-Zero at the end. However a post credit scene would have been great if they hinted at Shao Khan or Shang Sun gathering his forces/ karacters from the game for the sequel, which I wager the studio is already planning.
They could’ve just stayed to the original MK lore and stop at shang tsung’s defeat, then tease Shao Kahn and Quan Chi at the end of movie for some suspense for the next movie 🤦♂️
there wasn't a slightest reference to Shao Kahn or Quan Chi. No emperor, they even showed Shao Kahn's mural and statue twice, and failed to mention his name or position. Nathan Jones could have been a good Shao Kahn, but they decided to typecast him again as a mindless shouting brute who dies early. This should be insulting to both Nathan Jones and "General" Reiko.

I think some clips were missing from the movie, like some scenes, especially in the beginnning, was edited badly. They just instantly cut from one scene to another.

1st MK movie is still the Greatest VG Movie of all time. Next to Doom. Sorry but I loved Doom and I can watch both of em Over and Over again.
What was the point of being rated R then going PG 13 cheesy. After first 7 mins it turns into a cartoon.
My friend liked it but i thought the 1995 paced better overall. The tournament storyline really worked for that one.

that arcana shit was so fuckin dumb. dude had a shitty looking rip off of black panthers suit. literal plot armor. goro beat by a jabroni. reptile a literal lizard. movie got so boring until scorpion showed up. ill take the 90’s classic over this any day. had promising ideas but this was really just another modern action movie.
I didn't like the movie, I actually think it was trash. They rushed it too much (especially in the second half of the movie), and holy shit was Cole Young unnecessary. What was he in for? I kinda feel bad for the cast, because they actually did a decent job, and there were some positive things (I love the stages, the music was on point, the scenery was great and pictures in the background of the cave were cool with Delia and Argus, or the Great Kung Lao). It's not horrible as the Tekken or Street Fighter movie, but it still didn't satisfy me - the script was horrible, and out of place. Goro's representation was horrible, and so wasted. As a MK fan you just have certain expectations, but I kinda feel like they didn't give any crap about the lore at all.
