Now having lived in Canada for over 16 yrs, I feel that we have gotten carried away with baby proofing of houses. I originally come from Pakistan and there we had far more hazards in the home. When I was little for a time I have consumed concrete dust, sand, etc. and came out ok. Me and several of my cousins way back in the day have even fell down a pair stairs. And most of us never even got bruises. A cousin of mine cut his finger from a metal standing fan. But after some bandaging, he was good as new. We are muslims and in these situations, when a kid survives a potential hazard, its commonly said that god cushioned/protected the child from the blow.

But it's better to be safe then sorry. Just because you happened to get lucky, imagine the depth of sorrow of a mother who's lost her child just because she didn't take preventative measures and her child wasn't as lucky as you were.
