For the dipstick tube, I put it in before I put in the transmission cross-member/mount back in. There more room when the motor and transmission is lowered slightly (and catalytic converter removed) +Some wiggling and a 10mm bolt, and not much room at the bottom of the tube (PITA bolt 10mm). Make sure to rap them wires around that transmission tube! Them cats get hot!

A couple of things you might want to do during reassembly. Make sure you replace the crank angle sensor. It is so hard to get to, you don't want to remove drive shaft and exhaust just for that again. Also, the rear heater hoses and any other thing that is replaceable in the back top of the engine. What a great job you did. I like how you marked all the bolts and put them in ziplock bags. The dip stick should be put in before the cross member. I got so frustrated trying to get the trans cooler lines out, I cut them on the straightaway where the bell housing starts, then reconnected them with hoses and clamps. Works fine, I was replacing the torque converter due to those short bolts coming out and ripped the pilot off the torque converter, opening the thing to lose oil.

Thanks for all the Xterra viceos. I got one of these exact models about the same time you did! These videos have been a great help.

you are the REAL MVP my dude. Awesome. I have had that rear bell housing leak for far too long and toasted a starter by putting this off.

Yea Its so hard to verify if its the rear main seal or a gasket around the housing. I tried to put a inspection camera between the bell housing but its so tight between there hard to see.

I have an 01 Xterra and it’s had a big leak since I got it, awesome video, learning how to do it myself will probably save me 1 or 2 thousand dollars in labor.

I am watching during my 1 hour wait while the RTV sets up before I do the final torque of my oil pan bolts. I decided to go the route of removing the front differential, cross member, steering system, and sway bar to replace the oil pan completely and hoping that the stupid rubber seal at the rear main is the culprit of my leak. I will find out soon enough!

    • @FixingWithPassion

Yeah seems to be some weird sealing issues from the factory around the rear main seal (not so much for the seal) I've seen this alot.

Getting the TC to lock into the pump has been a PITA since the Powerglide days. GM sold many a bellhousing to inexperienced shadetrees.

That RTV/pan gasket is actually factory; other videos have the same response as yours ("someone did a hack job"). Putting that RMS housing back is technically difficult because you need to put both downward force (to compress the gasket and set the housing on the dowels) and horizontal force (to push it against the engine). This can make the oil pan gasket dislodge. A better method to replace the oil pan gasket is to drop the oil pan (which requires dropping the front diff) but then you won't be able to inspect the RMS if you don't also remove the transmission. My recommendation is to remove the transmission and replace the RMS and rear pan gasket then if it still leaks, do a proper pan gasket replacement by dropping the pan. You had a good idea to push the gasket in with a flat head (wish I had thought of that). I made the dowel holes in the oil seal holder just a bit larger with a drill bit to make it easier to put on so I'm not wrestling with it while the RTV sets. Get one side of the holder on then pliers on the other side to pull it down and compress the pan gasket.
I didn't hear you mention when to put the dip stick tube in. I didn't put the tube in till after connecting the transmission to the engine and I regretted it. Did you put the tube in before or after? If after, how?

    • @FixingWithPassion
      @FixingWithPassion  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I put the dip stick tube in when the transmission was slightly lowered after I bolted most of it together (bell-housing/motor). You have to play around with it and wiggle it. I did it that way so I'd have enough room to get to that little bolt (10mm) that holds the tube in (into the transmission) This way there is more room, not a lot, but better than when its up higher when the transmission mounts are up and bolted in. Even then, that little bolt is a PITA! -(Also If the are cat in on that side, its impossible to get that bolt in!). ...O---make sure to take time and route the transmission wires away from the cats! (mainly the ones that go on the finder well to the 4 plugs) Put them wires around the dip stick tube!! There are factory bendable hooks on it for that reason. Mine got to close because I did not do that. Lets just... say mine got a little to close because I was excited to the the job done ;) ... I knew I left something out of the video....Thanks for watching!

Hey Nathan, great details! Thank you so much for making these videos. They have been very helpful!!!
Before the torque converter went completely in and you thought it was in. Was there any wobble to the TC or did it feel solid(no wobble)before it seated completely?

Do the airbag light reset trick for Nissan, it worked for my 2001 Xterra. Do a search on TH-cam. Easy less than 5mins.

Hey Nathan. Would you happen to have the part number for the front transmission seal that you replace at about 15 minutes into this video? Does 224663 seem correct? Also, would you coat the inside of this seal with a little bit of ATF to help it slip over the shaft? Would you coat the inside of the RMS with a little motor oil for the same reason? Thanks. Bob in Idaho.

Do you think you can get to the knock sensor while you had the transmission out and the engine tipped down? Just wondering if it is accessible from the back while changing out the oil seal.

I know this is an old post but how did you get the torque converter back in. I took out the transmission for a rear main seal and i have been fighting this thing all day since 7 am and it's past 9 pm. Any tips or tricks you can share to help me get this torque converter back in? Ive watched soo many videos i turned the transmission on it end to try to drop it in, I have spun and spun to try to get it to go in the Three clicks they claim it does and the bolts are only flush with the end of the bell housing. not enough in to install back onto engine. any tips or tricks would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks for the videos!

So how big of a deal is this leak? Pretty sure I've got one going on. However, I'm not noticing my oil levels going down. There's no way I could ever do all this, so if it's not gonna really do anything having it leak, I'm not gonna worry about it. But if it could take out the whole car, then I'm selling the dang thing! Lol
