yeah, it was probably quite shaking for her. most of the time they talked about problems in the boiling isles, so when they did talk about the Luz's life in the human realm, it must have pretty shocking for her to realize she didn't know something this important about her girlfriend. But she proved to be a loving and supportive girlfriend by helping Luz get flowers in her realm since Luz couldn't do it with her mom this year, such a great girlfriend. Lumity foreveeeeeeeer 💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘
Luz is still in Denial. She avoids talking about it, and when forced to, she downplays the single most traumatic event in her life (at least until she went to the Boiling Isles) as much as possible, because she doesn't want to admit how much he unknowingly hurt her and her mother by dying.
@@tysondennis1016 I do the same thing when I talk about my dad. I don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable or feel the need to comfort me, so I say "it happened a long time ago, so I'm ok now", but I still miss my dad.
reminder: Dana has said she loves to tell her own story through Luz. Dana's father passed away in a car crash when she was 11 I can't help but feel this is one of the times she's using Luz's story as her own and it's really bittersweet
Wow that gives a whole deeper meaning to this scene. I’d guess Luz was maybe 5 or 6 when her dad passed away, and we don’t know how so it could have been a car crash.
It’s the horror in Amity’s eyes that sells it. The full realization of what sort of weight and pain Luz is going through, how the unshakable girl she loves is shaken by this; knowing that the calm is a front and there’s so little she can do to let her know it’s okay to be hurt.
@@allmigthygoddess939 It would be too similar to Marco and Star’s relationship and frankly I am happy about it because I would consider it as a miserable spectacle to see
Also congrats to the voice actress here. You can definitely hear the increase in stress in Luz's voice as she explains her problem to Amity. And Amity's expression when Luz tells her about the anniversary of her dads passing is classic "Holy @#$%".
She should’ve been able to just let all her emotions out, because I know Amity would’ve accepted her and just comforted her until she was feeling better
the way she just says "it was such a long time ago, it doesn't effect me anymore" when that is CLEARLY not the case? ouch, that just hits me in the core in so many different ways
Literally!! It is never easy to go through someone passing away, especially when you love them and admire them and they have been with you since the start of your life, just because it has been a long time since they passed away doesn’t mean your now unaffected by it
This whole season is really coming home with the “smile to hide the pain and burden myself over others” character flaw with Luz. You see that incredibly desperate sense of repression in every Lumity episode this season, but even ones without Amity like Separate Tides and Yesterday’s Lie lean hard on Luz being reckless of her own danger for others and panicking at social communication. This girl really needed friends and emotional support yet was disconnected for what’s shown now as MANY YEARS and off the grief of losing a parent. Honestly brilliant of Dana and crew for how well this makes sense across numerous episodes.
It clearly does. She even almost admits it but stops. When she admitted that she might have been jealous. It's clear she was. She's jealous that Amity has a dad. Even though their relationship needs fixing.
What sells this scene for me is: 1: Luz's inability to look at Amity while talking about her dad passing. A clear sign that she is lying/avoiding the truth of how she feels, when you are emotional and trying o hide it avoiding someone's gaze is the 1st thing you do because it is so much harder to hide the feelings when you look at them in the eye or even just them. 2: Amity's realization of just how much pain Luz has been in and how much of it she has been hiding. Not just about missing her father, but also about just being away from home and her mother for so long. Amity is probably wondering how much pain and fear has Luz been hiding.
@@matthew_master5786 haha! No, just a lot of personal experience. 😅 I am by no means a mental health professional, I did study human behavior for a little bit, but as I said mostly personal experiences.
@@Bubblegum_Vampire Then let me share a bit of education with you! People on the autism spectrum (, but also neurodivergent people as a whole [Luz has ADHD, so she is a part of that]) don't really do the eye contact thing (most not all, Luz seems to be unbothered, unless feelings pop up --> pattern), so the way Luz communicated via body language doesn't have to be avoidant. In fact your subconsciously regulated body lingo being *incongruent* with your words is more of a giveaway of her being avoidant of her emotions than the other way around, cuz she cognitively acts fine, but clearly is still emotionally suffering from this --> vocal fluctuations due to emotional impact, jelly legs, need for recovery time, facial expressions getting a (I'll just call it that for simplicity) depressed note (check her eyes) etc. The writing and attention to detail in this show are just amazing!
I really liked this tree, I liked to call it the Lumity tree. This scene also reminds me of that comic strip of Amity frustrated about Luz keeping secrets, but then coming clean really brought them together. I’m also noticing the episode is more father related then mothers.
I love, I absolutely LOVE how Amity isn't angry, she's just really really worried for her. like seriously I swear, they have the healthiest relationship I have EVER seen
I wouldn't say she isn't angry (Well, she's clearly a little upset). But true, instead of letting it out on Luz, she's trying to understand her better while still making her understand her own feelings. This is indeed one of the healtiest relashioship I've seen on tv.
One of the things I love about Lumity (aside from being so frickin sweet it'll give you diabetes) is that it IS such a healthy relationship. That's one of things I applaud the writers for. Its ALLOWED to be healthy. Most shows/books/etc. force drama by making relationships unhealthy, even toxic, just to drag out the drama. . But with these two, the writers realized that there's enough drama and other things going on in their lives that they could just let them be healthy and good for each other. I also love how as they become more comfortable in their relationship, the relationship itself takes a back seat narratively. They're not defined by each other, but they've always got the other's back. Its what a real, healthy relationship looks like long term. Being in a relationship doesn't magically fix everything, but it does (or should) mean you always have someone to lean on when you need it. Luz and Amity highlight that beautifully. I so wish the writers had more time to flesh out their story because they are so good at writing these two.
I have to respectfully disagree. Their relationship isn't that healthy. That doesn't mean they can't work on their issues to make it healthy, but it's not currently healthy. Luz keeps on keeping things from Amity until after they've been forced out into the light. It's called lying by omission, or sparing another's feelings by hiding your own. Luz needs to talk about what's going on so Amity can support her right from the start. Imagine how different Thanks to them could have turned out if Luz told everyone that Hunter felt Belos there. How much it wouldn't have hurt her friends and her Amity if she told them how Phillip had tricked her into helping him find The Collector. Heck, the Day of Unity could have turned out a lot better for the heroes if they knew how Phillip had tricked her. They could have attempted to steal The Collector away before the Day even happened.
@@DarkDreamsAndMoonlitNights i wouldn't say that that's really a relationship problem? Like obviously yes it affects their relationship, but I think that's more of just a problem Luz has that goes on to affect a lot of things, including Lumity's relationship, but it's not limited to _just_ their relationship, so it's not really just a relationship problem.
@@DarkDreamsAndMoonlitNights As the other person says, that's not an issue with their relationship as much as it is Luz's personal demons. Without diving too deep into her psyche, she has a repeated issue with not feeling like she can be completely honest with people. This effects her relationships with literally everyone in the cast. This also goes back to what I said about them not being defined by their relationship a bit. It goes the other way too: the relationship is not automatically unhealthy if one or both have mental health problems. A true test (imo) of a relationship is how it handles conflict, because conflict, IS going to happen in any relationship, even the most healthy ones. This is important to understand because many people think "As long as we're not fighting everything is good," which isn't always the case. And here you can examine Lumity when the truth of what Luz was keeping from people finally comes out. (Again, its important to note she was keeping this from EVERYONE, not just Amity). First off, what you don't see: "It's ok, Luz, you didn't do anything wrong." I was so glad Amity didn't say that. What she said instead is "I could never hate you." That does not say "I'm not mad" or "you didn't do anything wrong." Instead it says, "I am upset, and you did do wrong, but it doesn't stop me loving you." Its also important to know they DO tell Luz that accidentally helping Belos wasn't the issue. "Belos uses people, if it wasn't you, it would have been someone else." Luz was afraid her friends would abandon her if they found out what she did. They don't, of course, but they still let her know she did wrong by not telling them. And these things are important, and, yes, healthy. Its human to make mistakes. The worst thing you can do is pretend they weren't mistakes. And the show handles this beautifully in 3x01. Even when Luz is talking to her mother and saying its her fault her friends are stuck there, Camila doesn't say "Its not your fault", instead she says "Everyone makes mistakes." And that's how Amity handles it as well. "Yes, you did wrong. Yes, it hurt my feelings that you kept this from me." But she doesn't hold it over her or dwell on it, she just says "No more keeping secrets." And lets her know that, of course, it doesn't change how she feels about her. 1. Acknowledges the wrongdoing. 2. Acknowledges the pain it caused. 3. Makes plan for corrective action. 4. Reaffirms her feelings and lets the other know she's ready to move forward. I think that's very healthy.
I love how Luz immediately says "that's not an excuse for what I did..." A perfect way to show kids how tall about your feelings, and own up to how your actions hurt others! God I wish this kind of mentality was taught to all the toxic parents and the children unlucky enough to be born to them. See kids, trauma can be the reason why someone did something bad, but it's not a reason to excuse the bad behavior!
@@nokomoko8832 Okay, ouch Edit: I don’t blame you though (Mostly because no kid today enjoys cartoons whether they’re story driven or show comedy in the best of ways, plus the only thing they wanted is something tasteless)
It hurts to lose someone doesn’t it? That “It happened so long ago, it doesn’t affect anymore” hit way too close to home… it’s strange to miss someone I barely knew right?
I don't think it's strange. I miss my grandpa, despite only being 2 or 3 when he died. The way my dad talks about him, he sounds so fun, I wish I could've met him and yet I somehow miss him.
It's so painful. 3 years ago I lost my lovely dad (I was 17 when it happened). He was my guide, my mentor, he was the man I loved the most. Sometimes, the memories about his sickness (cancer) are so hard to remember. But, thanks God, I still have my mom and my brother. They show me how to keep going, and.... Wherever my dad he is, he's still one of the most important persons in my whole life. Hope we'll meet again.
I'm glad they treated this topic with respect. I lost my mother suddenly about a decade ago when I was in my teens, but I'll always remember weeping so hard at the hospital that day. Ever since I've definitely been way more emotionally distant/numb in sad situations. What hit a little too close to home was Luz saying she felt jealous when Amity talks about her father issues. I feel that pang of jealousy too whenever someone talks about how amazing or caring their mother is.
Jesus, this just…..wow…..I personally can’t understand the pain she’s dealing with but….Luz is really depressed here and she’s trying to hide it. Never seen her like this, and I just wanna hug her😔
Are you talking about Luz? Why? I mean Camilla seems to be doing fine, the problem between these two is just a communication issue. And Eda is essentially a second mom/cool aunt to Luz already as her mentor, so what would the need there be?
I'm noticing that the father-child relationship is becoming a recurring theme in this season. We've got King trying to reunite with his father, Eda having an awkward talk with her father after years of guilt over scarring him, Amity struggling to get along with Alador, the whole bombshell with Luz's dad being deceased, and Hunter possibly finding a father figure in Darius seeing as how Belos seems to be doing a terrible job. Also, I just learned today that Dana Terrace's father died in a car accident when she was 11. I imagine that this season must be very personal for her, I can only imagine what it's like to lose a parent.
Single Parent Households are becoming a thing around the world. Dana sees this... and she can join in the rest of the squad that tries to stop this from happened, mortal or relationship.
I lost my dad several years ago. Every month, we would get flowers and visit him. This hit me hard when I learned about what happened to Luz’s dad and I related to it a lot….
This also adds another layer on Camila's character. Her husband died to some unknown cause (possibly a car accident, if Dana Terrace's history is added to Luz's; her dad died when she was young too), and now Luz, her only daughter, is stuck in another world where quite a few inhabitants would literally chew you up and spit you out! I can't imagine how Camila feels.
@@Quinna5537 She never did that??? She just wanted Luz to calm down a bit since Luz's actions were genuinely a problem. The Vee episode confirms that Camilla supported Luz and her interest/creativity.
Actually, a recording on Luz's phone from another episode mentions that she and Camila likely moved to Gravesfield because there's a better hospital for her father to stay in. He might've been terminally ill.
@@tysondennis1016 Damn, I can't imagine how Camilla, Bee and Oum felt when their daughters woke up in the morning like usual and suddenly disappeared and then came back with unimaginable trauma that they can't explain
I make a _lot_ of jokes about my dads death but the truth is, that’s the same type of distraction as Luz joining the competition. It hurts, and I’m starting to cry over this scene because it’s really *real.* This tops the dance for me easily.
My father left when I was five. I remember the last thing he said to me was “good riddance”. I haven’t seen him since. I wish I knew what it was like having a loving father like Luz had.
I am sorry that your father was like that and the person who said that about your father is right. Some people do not deserve to be parents and your father was someone who didn't deserve the honor it was to be one. I hope you and your mother are better now.
What I like about this scene is how it demonstrates how to have a healthy discussion with someone you love when they mess up. Even though Amity is hurt and frustrated with Luz, she's very respectful and just wants to understand what's going on; and while Luz has her reasons for what she did, she doesn't try to use them as an excuse for her behavior, and she apologizes. PROPER COMMUNICATION.
Even though it wasn't an excuse, the fact that Luz was willing to explain and own up to it, regardless, is more than enough in Amity's book. Plus, I sense a vibe of regret on Amity's part for not only not knowing something this important about the girl she loves but also unintentionally fanning the flames of her grief.
My grandpa died the last year This really makes me remember to him. He was literally like a father to me and I miss him so much This episode was so relatable, I feel Luz so much.

@@emmaleigh8969 Disney+ now has the full season! I wish I saw this sooner because you’ve probably been waiting for 4 months lol Edit: Disney Channel also has it
This is also the reason I think she couldn’t stand after talking to amity. She hasn’t been able to talk about how she feels about her dad passing to ANYONE. She had no friends to confide in and her mother had her own grief, no way Luz would burden her mom with her grief. This is probably the first time Luz is talking about it and verbally acknowledging what happened. She’s been holding it in for so long no wonder the emotions had physical strain on her causing her to become physically weak in the knees and shaky.
0:58 That. Look. It's like Amity is seeing Luz for the first time. Kinda got a glimpse of this when she saw Luz cry for the first time but this is so different. The past few episodes have really highlighted how much Luz is struggling and I really hope what's left of the show capitalises on Amity now knowing that Luz isn't just the eternal optimist/happy-go-lucky goofball that she makes herself out to be. She needs serious help.
@@scarletweb2106 mine did too out of all the people im my life who died he may be who I miss the most, I was 8 when he died and that was the first time I ever experienced a loss like that
Seeing Luz hit possibly her lowest point in the show so far and knowing what she’s going through, and Amity being there for her to help her through this tough time, one of the sweetest and most emotional moments of the whole show
Really this scene exemplifies why I love their relationship so much. They have a genuine emotional attachment to and understanding of one another, and with that a willingness to listen. Too often fictional romances are undercut by parties not communicating with one another, making assumptions, or being unwilling to hear their significant other out. Amity starts this scene out still obviously upset with Luz for how her antics ruined this event for her, yet even then is willing to give Luz a chance to explain herself, clearly realizing that her girlfriend's behavior has been subtly off the entire day. And when Luz gives a genuine, heartfelt apology explaining the cause of her behavior without leaning on it as an excuse, Amity immediately accepts it and moves from being upset with Luz to being concerned over how obviously affected by the anniversary of her father's death she is. No attempts to artificially create or unnecessarily prolong relationship drama between two characters who clearly care a great deal for one another. When it occurs the drama feels legitimate precisely because the writers do not forget that these characters still love and trust each other deeply. Even in her temporary anger over a betrayal of that trust, Amity does not completely forget her feelings for Luz, and gives her the benefit of the doubt to explain herself and apologize. Other writers really ought to take notes on this because this is precisely how to write a healthy, romantic relationship and have it be believable.
sorry for your loss, my dad passed away too last year, but hope you and your mother or siblings (if you have siblings ) can through this year without him(・-・) \(・◡・)/ *virtual hugs
My dad passed away a year ago... I remember working on the day of the anniversary, and realizing...'I should feel sadder, but I'm not' and it was like this numbing feeling.
As someone who lost his dad recently this really hit me in the feels. Its hard to see Luz, the happiest most optimistic character in the show, so shaken and clearly sad about this day. Its very beautifully written how she avoids it, or lash out at things (that abomaton), and pile it up with "distractions" in an attempt to run from it. And the way her legs just doesnt respond after she talked abt it was so relatable. Loved this ep and loved how this was written.
I love the Owl House for reasons like this. I lost my dad at the age of 10 and even now that I'm 22, it's hard. I love the LGBTQ rep in the show sure, but it is such a great moment to see some personal representation as well. Sure we can joke about how Disney likes the whole "dead parent" trope but it felt real coming from Luz. They nailed her expressions too and it reminded me..and continues to remind me.. of how I felt or deal with that anniversary every year. I don't know if any of the creators will ever see this, but if you do thank you for finally giving me a character I truly relate to and understand. I hope you never had to go through that loss but if you did thank you for creating an outlet that others can relate to too.
I lost my mother about a decade too when I was 14. I don't feel sorrow as severely as that day but the anniversary definitely still hurts. I occasionally have those random thoughts about "What if this happened that day?" or "If she was here now..." In the end, all you can really do is cherish the memories you had together. I'm so glad the show slowed down to talk about this because it definitely felt more real and allowed so many of us to talk about our experiences.
It hurts, my mom passed away when I was 12. She passed away on Christmas and it hurts me today still. Everytime we have Christmas today as a family it just wasn't the same. Especially on my birthday my mom would be there singing all that. When I had my very first birthday without her it just hurted..
The two moments that strike me the most are Amity's subtle eye movements of expression when Luz talking about her dad, and Luz's "jelly legs" after the fact. I feel like in most shows that decide to touch upon heavy moments like this, they'll acknowledge the weight of the topic at hand, without really going into detail of the unconscious bodily reactions that come with discussing such emotionally charged subjects. This moment demonstrates an attentiveness to detail that I haven't seen of any other show that truly sets it apart from others.
@@scarletweb2106 Luz has a good support group with her friends and family, not to mention a caring girlfriend in Amity. The trauma of her experiences will always be there, but with so much love around her, I think she'll be just fine, in time.
You can tell how hard this is from the start just by how she can't look at Amity while talking about. And Amity can't stay mad at Luz. By now she knows Luz only lies when she's avoiding something difficult, she knows it's never something "bad". But this was more than she expected and instantly understood that Luz isn't thinking straight and hasn't been thinking straight all day. Also note how after this she looks tired for the rest of the episode.
Wow, I never really thought that Luz has lost her father, really this explains many things in front of her attitude since growing up without a father figure is really sad and makes you little strong in the face of the problems and challenges that existed, Dana Terrace knew how to portray this perfectly and made the boiling islands, Eda, King, Willow, Gus, Amity and many more as the motivators to the change towards the best version of Luz. I was very sad the truth when I heard him say smile of the death of his father. If Luz existed I think she would deserve a hug just like all those children who grew up or grow up without a father or mother.
This whole season is really coming home with the “smile to hide the pain and burden myself over others” character flaw with Luz. i like how the tree works as a metaphor for luz and amity's relationship. when it first blossomed, it was big and grandiose, just like luz and amity's relationship was a beautiful beginnimg of something new. Now it has been a while, the tree has less leaves, maybe its seen some bad weather. but despite the challenges and adversity it has a strong foundation and it still stands.
Something I didn't notice until like the 13th rewatch of this was that the music cuts out just for that moment of realization on Amity's face. Like, when Amity can't say anything, and Luz stops midsentence, the music goes quiet with them for that brief moment of silence.
It's so easy to mask depression with a cheerful face. Poor Luz, she doesn't deserve to suffer like this, but I'm so happy she has a supportive and caring person like Amity in her life.
I love how even though Luz has troubles, she and Amity talk and work things out in the end, that's the symbol of real trust, which is very important in a stable relationship. But, I started crying at this scene, I have never cried at any Owl House episode.
With the revelation that Manny died of an illness, that recontextualizes Luz’s previous attempts to cure Eda. Once again, Luz has to deal with the possibility of losing a parental figure to an illness. She probably blames herself for being unable to cure Manny, so she’s not going to fail Eda the same way.
Can I just say that Luz’s voice actress did an amazing job. She really sounded like a kid who was going through a tough time and having trouble talking about it. It made the scene so much more impactful and beautiful that way
Luz pretending that it doesn't matter anymore, when it obviously does to the extent of warping her entire behavior for the day, is really sad. It shows that it really does still hurt her, a lot. Its also telling how Luz gets uncomfortable when she sees the look on Amity's eyes. She deceived herself to the extent of seemingly not realizing how Amity would react to hearing that.
The way she tried to brush it off saying that it was a long time ago felt so real. The horrible part about losing a loved one is that it never stops hurting no matter how much time passes or how much you've accepted it. It'll never truly feel better
It makes so much sense now why Luz is so torn on her promise to her mom. She knows that the two need each other and their comfort but she also has people who love and need her in the demon realm. It also makes sense why her mom is so protective of her and only wants the best, she is scared of her losing her daughter and in turn, the last piece of her husband.

What makes his scene more heartbreaking is that Luz acts all casual and awkward while Amity is having an Oh my God moment it just makes the scene a mixed bag of emotions it’s really sad
THIS SHOW DESERVES MORE RECOGNITION BECAUSE THE DARK REALISTIC ASPECT OF LOSING A LOVED ONE- Luz’s legs shaking and her voice breaking and the reasoning behind what she did but not really knowing why. Everything is so well put together 😭
To @EmptyMan000 and @Hayden Berends; THANK YOU! Lately I've been getting nothing but replies like Kyler's on any comment I left on ANY video, so seeing you two call out Kyler's logic was very reassuring.
@EmptyMan000 I think the person is saying that if Amity has to constantly dig to get the truth out of Luz then this might end up like the Eda and Rain break up.
Dude, that part where Luz trembles from getting up really got me. Like, Holy shit!!! She's grieving as hell. Honestly could never imagine feeling this weak in my entire life :(
The look on Amity's face is just SO well done here. The dawning horror of realizing that she was upset with Luz for getting involved in her father/daughter drama only to find out that Luz' dad is dead just feels like she's having that moment of "My issues with my dad can be worked out eventually, but Luz will never even see hers again."
The ending scene with the balloon and the flowers was also really good. I loved the detail that Amity isn't nearly as good at drawing the glyphs as Luz, since she doesn't have much practice, but the shot of the flowers floating away, and just them sitting next to each other was so beautiful. Also, as someone who's on the spectrum and has recurring issues with trying to hide problems and lying to people about them to keep them from worrying about it, seeing all that same behavior in Luz is just really sad. It's like when you know something bad is gonna happen, and you know a character is making a mistake, but it's 10x worse because it's the exact same thing you would do in that situation. Amity knows when Luz is lying to her or hiding stuff from her, and we've already had that happen twice in 4 episodes. Having to confront your loved one about lying to you multiple times is a good way to strain a relationship fast, and even if Amity doesn't want to completely end the relationship, it's gonna cause some trust issues after enough repeats.
It tears me apart seeing how Luz tries not to give importance to her father's dead in order to apologize to Amity. I still find it surprising that Luz is so humble, that even at her worst she tries to do her best.
OKAY but can we talk about Luz's voice actor for a second!! Sarah-Nicole Robles performance with the lines starting at 0:46 was literally breathtaking. The way her voice perfectly wavers and wobbles on the verge of holding back tears, the way it CRACKS.... truly stunning voice work.
This is the first time this show has made me cry. I was on the brink of tears this entire scene, and it really made me realize how much I've grown to care about these characters. Seeing Luz look so small and vulnerable absolutely broke me. I'm used to her being so happy and full of energy, but seeing her so quiet and tired while trying to hide how her dad's death effects her is so fucking heartbreaking. I also gotta applaud the actors. I already think Luz's voice actress does a fantastic job bringing Luz's character to life, but this scene made me respect her so much more. Everything felt so real. I think that's why this scene it me so hard, it had nothing to do with magic or anything related to fiction, it's a character talking about a very very real thing everyone goes through or will go through. This young girl lost her parent at a very young age and is dealing with it in a very real way. It's so fucking real. I've never lost anyone close to me before but I could feel anything Luz was feeling, and could somehow understand her pain at a very personal level. My heart goes out to anyone who's lost someone close to them, sending hugs to all of you!!!♥️♥️♥️
The emotions of Luz and Amity are portrayed so well here. Their tones and facial reactions even small ticks. It’s portrayed so well. Honestly this is such an amazing show.
Since everyone is mentioning dearly departed ones, guess I might as aswell. Both my mom and grandma died only a few months apart from each other. Both of them were bed written for diferent health problems. Mom was a paraplegic and grandma at the final stages of alzheimer. Sure we argued and fought that comes with the territory of being in a family. I loved and cherished them alot but they are in a better place now.
Amity's face at 0:58 is heartbreaking. It’s the face someone who cares about you makes when they realize just how bad you are hurting, despite your efforts to downplay it and convince them (and yourself) it's not that bad. Scene hit a bit close to home when I saw it for the first time, one of the best in the show for that imo.
This. Is just purely awesome. Amity isn't able to fully understand Luz's burdens of losing a parent, but also made it clear in one sentence, she doesn't HAVE to know what Luz is going through in order understand that she can't keep these emotions pushed back and to try to help.
@Kyle2019@ Doesn't "Fully understand;" She may not know what it's like to lose a parent and does have a somewhat strained relationship with her own mom and dad. But she can tell what Luz went through has been hurting her on the inside, her and Camilla's tradition is important to her and she's willing to do what she can to help put Luz's mind at ease.
I think Amity clearly communicating (through facial expression) that Luz's problem (that she wants to brush of as nothing) is nothing to smile about is a genius animation moment. Nonverbal communication is hard to convey even in visual media. Edit: also Luz understanding said message at 1:00
This is really relatable because my dad passed away in 2018, I was 11 and it was my birthday. However, mom and I were never close so we don’t do anything about it, I just mention it and she says “yeah I guess”
What adds to the gravity of this scene is luz is still holding in a lot of stuff, not just about her dads passing but the promise luz’s mom wants her to keep when luz inevitably returns home of staying with her and never returning to her friends and new family in this world. When that problem surfaces (along with the unity) everything’s gonna crash down on Luz at once.
Amity... 😊 she loves Luz enough to be there through her own pain. Luz was always there for Amity when she hurt. Now its her turn to be there for her girlfriend
In all fairness, I can totally understand why Luz would want to keep that a secret. The grief of losing a father is something I don't know about, but I can understand that such a topic is very sensitive and most people wouldn't want to speak about it. Luz wanted to avoid talking about it as thinking about her dad and being unable to fulfill the ritual in his honor stirred up some very painful repressed memories. However, Luz needed to learn that their people will listen and support her through such hard times. Amity's reaction also is worth a mention, she doesn't say anything, but we can all see the shock, remorse, guilt, and even horror of what she just heard. She just witnessed Luz at most emotionally vulnerable, and with that, she's developed a new understanding that goes deeper than anyone else on the isles. Amity has always relied on her girlfriend as emotional support, a confidant, and someone who helped guide her to a better path. But now the young witch realizes that she's not the only one who's hurting on the inside, she now realizes that Luz is actually a deeply traumatized, lonely child who relies on fantasy, and cheery optimism to cover up her pain. Luz isn't used to being empathized with and putting others' problems first and foremost as a way to distract herself from her own. Amity promising the help Luz pick some flowers to help her fulfill her ritual is basically her way of support to her girlfriend at her most emotionally lowest point. She's basically saying "It's okay Luz, you don't have to hide anything from me, and I'll always be there for you when you need it most." That is some solid writing there.
This episode was such a wonderful representation of father-daughter relationships for teen girls. No petty drama or pointless anger or pitting siblings or parents against each other. Just a thoroughly nuanced and authentic representation of the importance of communication and the gaining of independance.
I’m glad there is a cartoon character I can relate to in a sense of having a dad who didn’t leave but because he passed away. I’m really happy that Luz said “I know that isn’t an excuse for what I did” because a lot of characters seem to have that as an excuse and as someone who has lost their dad at a young age too, THAT ISNT AN EXCUSE TO BE A BUTT! Everyone deals with grief differently and I 100% understand but if it turns into an excuse for everything then it’s…idk honestly it just stops feeling genuine.
The best scene in all the show, and you can't change my mind. It really shows, not only how much Amity cares for Luz, but, quite honestly, how hard it is for Luz to act or, do something accidentally selfish. It breaks her "It happened a long time ago" as she tries to invalidate the problem, trying not to make the discussion about herself, and the voice breaking... It's amazing. Its even better, when you realize it's infront of the Grom tree
It was probably a good thing Amity was sitting down, the look on her face makes me think she would have fallen if she had been on her feet. Props to the artists on this show, the look of shock and heartbreak on Amity's face, you cant help but empathise.
Throughout the entire episode Luz's behavior was so familiar to me to the point I knew exactly what was wrong almost immediately, but I still straight up wept during this scene. You can really tell this kind of loss is something Dana Terrace went through. It's way too spot on to be pure fiction
Honestly, everything about this scene is flawless: the animation, the voice acting, and the score. I can’t personally relate, but the confession still made me cry. This has to be my second favourite episode this half of the season after “Any Sport in a Storm”
My grandma died when I was still at school and I was crying so hard after the funeral. The memory of the walk after the funeral was hazy and I still miss her I'm so glad this episode exist because the death of a relatives or extended family can be heartbreaking.
I love how Amity doesn’t get mad at Luz in this seen, she’s mainly just worried for her. Amity really is the best girlfriend I’ve seen in any form of media
Honestly the face amity makes is exactly why it's so hard to talk about this kind of stuff. After a while it's emotionally exhausting, and you try to push your feelings down so that you don't make people sad for you, and you begin to feel guilty that people are spending emotional energy on you. No matter what you say though, most loved ones will be pretty sad to hear that. Anyway Amity is a good girlfriend.
Anyone who's ever met a 14-year-old will tell you how freaking mature they're both being right now. Despite her own hurt, Amity knows from past experience that Luz never hurts others on purpose and that she's been acting out of character throughout the whole day; Amity then sets aside her hurt feelings in order to get to the bottom of what caused this behavior. Instead of clamming up or lashing out, Luz straight-up discloses the extremely personal reason why she's been acting out and going into further detail as to why and how it influenced the mistakes she made. She starts with saying that it doesn't excuse her actions, and ends her explanation with genuine remorse and a whole-hearted apology for how she's behaved. Amity then heavily implies that she's willing to accept Luz's apology, forgive her, and talk everything out after the situation has been resolved. ...Holy shit, I *WISH* people in real life were this mature and understanding towards each other.
This show drives home how important communication is. Between friends. Between relatives. Between lovers. If you don't express yourself and expect everyone else to just KNOW, nothing will ever be accomplished.
God, this scene feel too raw. It's a delicate topic, but I love how they take this kind of "things" most soft they can. 🙏 Ps: I pray for all of you guys, am so sorry for ur lose 🪔🙏🙏🙏
This scene, honestly made me fall in intense sadness. The music, the setting, the atmosphere just burns you. The way Luz is carrying herself and her eyes as Amity worries and right as she started speaking here eyes just started looking empty as if the feeling that should be there just doesn't appear until she saw the anxiety and fear in Amity's eyes as she slowly digests the breaking down that is happening to Luz. Luz seeing that sadness and ultimately just cracking into tear that makes her bend the knee as soon as she stands up really sells how mentally taxed she is just felt so raw.
One thing that I've never seen commented about is this moment, right here 0:31 Where Amity asks 'Does it have something to do with the Human Realm' So, after watching this about eighty times, I realized how much this line means. Amity has probably made the connection about the human realm and Luz having to go back and leave her. But she's still ready to listen to Luz talk about how much she misses her mom, or her friends, or just the realm itself. Even though every time Luz mentions it, she is reminded that Luz is going to go back and, if Luz told her about the promise, stay there. This is why Amity is an awesome girlfriend and this show is awesome.
Here after the ending. Amity’s eyes when Luz tells her is just… burned into my mind. Amity is my favorite character in the show and the sheer shock on her face is just heart wrenching.
As someone who lost their dad a few years ago and just recently lost two other family members unexpectedly. This episode hit harder than an 18 wheeler traveling at lightspeed on the freeway
😭😭 It reminds me of Coco where Coco's father was murdered until years later Miguel sings to his great grandmother Coco just like her father used to sing to her when she was little
1:19 The animators and voice actors deserve 100 awards for this scene alone. There's so many minute mannerisms that sell the scene and make me want to jump through the screen and give Luz a hug. The slight inflection and tonal shifts are also amazing. Really this should be studied in all levels of education to understand empathy or for writers or literally just because it's really good and deserves the recognition.
“It was a long time ago” Doesn’t mean anything in terms of grief. Grief is complicated and highly dependent on the person affected. It could be a fresh wound or a decade old scar, the process of healing isn’t quick or linear. The only way to describe it is ‘natural’, nobody grieves the same.
Luz's burden gets so strong she literally collapses under it. Dead parents are a common Disney trope. Too common. Offensively common. At least here it matters. Her dad died a decade ago and it still hurts because it should. It probably hurts worse because of the guilt of leaving her Mom alone this year.
@@OsirisLord THIS! This is indeed something I LOVE about Lumity: How they respect their bounderies! An other exemple I can give is the fact that Amity did NOT look inside Luz's phone when she knew the latter was hiding something. The episode wouldn't change that much if she did (Hell, I have a feeling that in a earlier script, Amity did check it, but someone step in to change it...), yet the fact they precise she didn't do it shows not only a great respect of privacy but also what should be done first: Confronting your partner. Bonus point for showing Amity struggling on weather or not she should do it in the first place. That shows that yes, it might be difficult but it's nescessary.

Especially in her eyes, the way they tremble when she’s listening to Luz 😭 I am NOT OKAY
@Kyle2019@ Oh, I’m sure Amity hugged the SHIT out of her after the episode ended, man.
yeah, it was probably quite shaking for her. most of the time they talked about problems in the boiling isles, so when they did talk about the Luz's life in the human realm, it must have pretty shocking for her to realize she didn't know something this important about her girlfriend. But she proved to be a loving and supportive girlfriend by helping Luz get flowers in her realm since Luz couldn't do it with her mom this year, such a great girlfriend. yeah ):
It hurts more when you realize how much she’s trying to invalidate her own feelings by saying “it happened long ago” and “it’s not an issue anymore”
Luz is still in Denial. She avoids talking about it, and when forced to, she downplays the single most traumatic event in her life (at least until she went to the Boiling Isles) as much as possible, because she doesn't want to admit how much he unknowingly hurt her and her mother by dying.

Wow that gives a whole deeper meaning to this scene. I’d guess Luz was maybe 5 or 6 when her dad passed away, and we don’t know how so it could have been a car crash.

😭😭😭😭
It’s the horror in Amity’s eyes that sells it. The full realization of what sort of weight and pain Luz is going through, how the unshakable girl she loves is shaken by this; knowing that the calm is a front and there’s so little she can do to let her know it’s okay to be hurt.
That’s exactly what stuck out to me in this scene
I'm just glad they finally showed Amity having hobbies and a life outside of being with Luz.
Yeah. This kinda changes everything we know about about Luz as a character.
And even though she didn't understand their flower ritual, she offered to do it anyway because she knew it would make Luz happy.

Also congrats to the voice actress here. You can definitely hear the increase in stress in Luz's voice as she explains her problem to Amity. And Amity's expression when Luz tells her about the anniversary of her dads passing is classic "Holy @#$%".
She should’ve been able to just let all her emotions out, because I know Amity would’ve accepted her and just comforted her until she was feeling better

ouch, that just hits me in the core in so many different ways
It shows that it still effects her so much but she’s trying to put on a brave face.
It doesn't have to be related to death either.
It clearly does. She even almost admits it but stops. When she admitted that she might have been jealous. It's clear she was. She's jealous that Amity has a dad. Even though their relationship needs fixing.
What sells this scene for me is:
1: Luz's inability to look at Amity while talking about her dad passing.
This is perhaps the best wrighting i ever saw I mean this is something from a film or novel I mean that it's kind of rare even for me
Do you work with mental health or something? This whole comment was so insightful.
This is golden Comment, i Love it 💯💯💯 ✨ ✨✨
I really liked this tree, I liked to call it the Lumity tree. This scene also reminds me of that comic strip of Amity frustrated about Luz keeping secrets, but then coming clean really brought them together. I’m also noticing the episode is more father related then mothers.
The lumity tree… I like the sound of that
Or you can just call it the Lumi-tree
It is a distractingly romantic tree...
I think its the tree that bloomed during grom
The Lumitree if you will
I love, I absolutely LOVE how Amity isn't angry, she's just really really worried for her.
like seriously
I swear, they have the healthiest relationship I have EVER seen
First off, what you don't see: "It's ok, Luz, you didn't do anything wrong."
I was so glad Amity didn't say that. What she said instead is "I could never hate you." That does not say "I'm not mad" or "you didn't do anything wrong." Instead it says, "I am upset, and you did do wrong, but it doesn't stop me loving you."
Its also important to know they DO tell Luz that accidentally helping Belos wasn't the issue.
Even when Luz is talking to her mother and saying its her fault her friends are stuck there, Camila doesn't say "Its not your fault", instead she says "Everyone makes mistakes."
And that's how Amity handles it as well.

Seeing how many people feel the same, I don’t think it’s strange💜
It's so painful. 3 years ago I lost my lovely dad (I was 17 when it happened). He was my guide, my mentor, he was the man I loved the most. Oh god same Luz, except im not as lovable
Not to mention how hard she was projecting on Kikimora and her family issues
@@emmaleigh8969
Disney+ now has the full season! I wish I saw this sooner because you’ve probably been waiting for 4 months lol
Edit: Disney Channel also has it
This is also the reason I think she couldn’t stand after talking to amity.
Anyone else’s heart just drop when you saw the word “graveyard” on Luz’s phone? Mine sank.
Same!
Same
for me was more of a "oh damn" moment
I didn’t want to believe it at first… But Luz started opening up and I just
Started tearing up.
Bruh when I saw that, I was like "oh fuck😰"
0:58 That.
😭😭😭💔💔💔
Naw don't make me cry even more!
I hope after watching and dreaming Camila got Luz therapy and so did the former
Ok this aged well, Thanks to them is exactly that
What moment do you mean by "Luz cry for the first time"?
I did not want my theory about luzs dad to be correct, it hits way to close to home…..I lost my mom a few years ago and i know EXACTLY how luz feels
my mother passed away 6 years ago... it still feels like yesterday. I still miss her dearly. it is a hard loss

Seeing Luz hit possibly her lowest point in the show so far and knowing what she’s going through, and Amity being there for her to help her through this tough time, one of the sweetest and most emotional moments of the whole show
Well this didn’t age well unfortunately.
@@Hartzilla2007 nope!
Luz: "This is the lowest point in my life"
Phillip: "-the lowest point in your life *so far* ."
@@vanguard-pv5mc Luz and Amity should get married someday and have kids.

Just the look of pure concern for Luz's mental health and how much pain she has been going through that Amity gives is amazing
She can't stop blaming herself for factors she can't control, which is not healthy at all.
Whoa poor Luz
Sarah Nicole Robles is an amazing voice actress. You can literally hear Luz's pain when she says "It's totally not an issue anymore."
Aww poor Luz
I can understand you. My brother passed out 10 years ago, when I was 12. And it's still hurting me and making feel all the pain
@@ashuizz I’m sorry for your loss.
this is the creator’s own experience. she wanted to tell her story through luz.
Luz has lost both her mom and dad, metaphorcially and literally respectively. The pain is unbearable.
Oh man poor Luz
At least she got her mom back.
You think Luz's gonna be okay
@@scarletweb2106 Luz has a good support group with her friends and family, not to mention a caring girlfriend in Amity. The trauma of her experiences will always be there, but with so much love around her, I think she'll be just fine, in time.
Another nice detail is the lack of eye contact. Like she's telling HERSELF that her pain is no big deal, not Amity.
Didn't Luz's dad died recently?
@@bobthebacon3163 No from the pictures and the fact she said a long time ago, it happened when Luz was much much younger.
This girl really needed friends and emotional support yet was disconnected for what’s shown now as YEARS.
Honestly brilliant of Dana and crew for how well this makes sense across numerous episodes.
Aww poor girl
i like how the tree works as a metaphor for luz and amity's relationship. when it first blossomed, it was big and grandiose, just like luz and amity's relationship was a beautiful beginnimg of something new.
Poor Luz needs some help
My mother passed away 6 years ago when I was 12, so I was in the same position Luz was in. I understand the grief.
I love how even though Luz has troubles, she and Amity talk and work things out in the end, that's the symbol of real trust, which is very important in a stable relationship. But, I started crying at this scene, I have never cried at any Owl House episode.
😭😭😭 Is Luz's gonna be okay
This is so beautiful and sad…
The music, the setting, Amity!
Ahh it’s all just so emotional!
Aww it's so sad
Poor Luz she needs art therapy, music therapy and reading therapy
It makes so much sense now why Luz is so torn on her promise to her mom. She knows that the two need each other and their comfort but she also has people who love and need her in the demon realm. It also makes sense why her mom is so protective of her and only wants the best, she is scared of her losing her daughter and in turn, the last piece of her husband.
💔💔💔 Luz thinks she's a burden, a freak, a weirdo and a loser she don't belong in the human realm

@EmptyMan000 I think the person is saying that if Amity has to constantly dig to get the truth out of Luz then this might end up like the Eda and Rain break up.
Dude, that part where Luz trembles from getting up really got me. Like, Holy shit!!! She's grieving as hell. Honestly could never imagine feeling this weak in my entire life :(
1:15 this line was just perfectly delivered, luz slows down and stutters a bit as if shes reorganizing her thoughts on what to say
Luz's character is really deep and interesting, and this is one of the moments where she shows it.
The scene is so beautifully sad
My heart goes out to anyone who's lost someone close to them, sending hugs to all of you!!!♥️♥️♥️
I feel sorry for Luz
The emotions of Luz and Amity are portrayed so well here. Their tones and facial reactions even small ticks. It’s portrayed so well.
Honestly this is such an amazing show.
Since everyone is mentioning dearly departed ones, guess I might as aswell.
Both my mom and grandma died only a few months apart from each other. Both of them were bed written for diferent health problems. Mom was a paraplegic and grandma at the final stages of alzheimer.
Sure we argued and fought that comes with the territory of being in a family. I loved and cherished them alot but they are in a better place now.
I offer my sincerest condolences.
1:47 I really like this, amity knows she can’t stay with luz when people are clearly in trouble but she also reassures luz that she’s coming back
Amity's face at 0:58 is heartbreaking.
0:49 I love it so much! It just brings out the feels and how everything comes to light. Death of loved one is hard.
Me too
I think Amity clearly communicating (through facial expression) that Luz's problem (that she wants to brush of as nothing) is nothing to smile about is a genius animation moment. Nonverbal communication is hard to convey even in visual media.

The one Who smiles the most is often a person that hide the most pain
She's basically saying "It's okay Luz, you don't have to hide anything from me, and I'll always be there for you when you need it most."
That is some solid writing there.
It breaks her
"It happened a long time ago" as she tries to invalidate the problem, trying not to make the discussion about herself, and the voice breaking...
It's amazing. Its even better, when you realize it's infront of the Grom tree
That moment when you want to reach through the screen, wrap that child in a hug and not let go for the rest of the night.
That's true. Dana had lost her father when she was young
This scene is so well done. Luz's voice cracking as she speaks, the shocked look on Amity's face, all with the quiet music in the background.
tfw when two animated 14 year olds have more maturity and healthier communication than most tv couples on average
Because people feed off relationship drama and don't like healthy relationships because of that
Honestly, everything about this scene is flawless: the animation, the voice acting, and the score. I can’t personally relate, but the confession still made me cry. This has to be my second favourite episode this half of the season after “Any Sport in a Storm”
My grandma died when I was still at school and I was crying so hard after the funeral. The memory of the walk after the funeral was hazy and I still miss her
I'm so glad this episode exist because the death of a relatives or extended family can be heartbreaking.
No because this scene literally broke me. Luzs consant voice cracks while she's talking about her dad, amitys face, everything
I love how Amity doesn’t get mad at Luz in this seen, she’s mainly just worried for her. Amity really is the best girlfriend I’ve seen in any form of media
I like how commanding she sounded with her tone 1:44 lol, but I know she was just embarrassed and she cares about Luz
Ps: I pray for all of you guys, am so sorry for ur lose 🪔🙏🙏🙏
I like the way Luz tried changing the subject after seeing the pain in Amity’s eyes. Big people pleaser moment. 😔✊
Also she looked away from Amity bc seeing her so worried for Luz breaks Luz’s heart 🥲
The moment Luz said “Today’s the anniversary of my dad passing away” my reaction was the same as Amity’s reaction
Amity’s look of realization, combined with Luz falling to the ground 😭😭😭😭😭😭 this episode hit HARD
One thing that I've never seen commented about is this moment, right here 0:31 Where Amity asks 'Does it have something to do with the Human Realm'
So, after watching this about eighty times, I realized how much this line means.
“It was a long time ago”
Doesn’t mean anything in terms of grief.
That's true!
@@claireaquos6532 Another important observation: Luz asks if she can sit down. Because boundaries matter even with your partner.
