The Constellation series hold a special place for me, I still fly my Phoenix almost every time I play. While it could use a refresh pass, it is still fun to fly. As for why it holds a special place, I was stationed on the USS Constellation while in the Navy. I just wish that we could put custom names on the ships both in game and in the hanger.

the Phoenix is by far my favorite ship not just in my hangar but in the game. It really is a great all-rounder, comes with a snub and Lynx, and has a really nice interior.

GO NAVY!!! I had the pleasure, even as a Yeoman otherwise on shore duty at NAS Norfolk, of doing a nice 47-day Caribbean workup on the Ike (CVN-69) thanks to a TAD opportunity and it was life-changing to say the least! Better still, it was the inaugural cruise of a US combat vessel with female sailors aboard which was in itself rightfully an historic event (one during which I ALSO got to watch OJ Simpson be chased in his white Bronco on live TV along with the rest of the free world)! @@versegen2

The Andromeda was my first large Multicrew Ship, so it'll always stay in my heart as my beloved. I love everything about it. It's like a swiss army knife and has a tool for every occasion. The design is awesome and even though there are options that are better in their specialized category, the Andromeda does everything good enough. Great ship all around.

@@Farrister I very specifically said it is the best looking, non Drake ship!😝 love it because I love Star Trek ships more than any sci fi franchise ships. The Connie nailed that aesthetic, just enough, while also maintaining a very distinct and unique look of its own!☺️ The Apollo is going to be in my fleet for that reason too!

I was literally talking with a friend about how this is the ship I am going to go for as my first big ship purchase in game. I love the look of this thing and the moody purple emergency lighting. Having three friends on the bridge together alongside one another sounds like a lot of fun to me, too! I'm excited to work my way up to it.

I bought this ship over a year ago. Nowadays, my family, friends, and I regularly log in and take her out over our single-seaters. We've had some amazing sessions on it. I'm talking about a group of 6 or so from my best friend and his 20-something son to my sister and brother-in-law with my 12 and 14-year-old nephew and niece. It was the best decision of my time with this game. The sound of glee and excitement the kids had when I had them drive was #priceless. They took it so seriously and really wanted to do a good job and they did. Doesn't hurt that my buddy's son is a beast with the Merlin either. We're all excited to get on board and take a trip to Pyro when it's a thing.

She really is practically perfect. She just needs a glow-up to be one of the best multiroles in the game, and the biggest ship you can fly practically solo. Copilots have something to do with all of those missiles to play with, and the turrets (when they don't straight kill you) give meaningful gameplay too. Not many ships can give 4 people something to do and none give you the snub.

I don't own an Andromeda, but my brother in law has one. I love it so much.
My dad has a Corsair as well, and I love that ship as well, punches much harder.
It's worth mentioning that the Corsair handles worse than the Andromeda, even if the stats suggest they are similar.
But the Corsair can fit more kinds of vehicles, and even some smaller ships in the back.
Love them both, I'm glad i don't have choose, and have access to both.
The Andromeda attic reminds me of Firefly for some reason. Which I also love.

Enough cargo space to make some money but not so much you pull your hair out when you lose everything. It's taken so much damage and got me back safe that the repair bill was 150,000. I will be purchasing in game but can't decide between the Andromeda or the Taurus. o7.

The Andromeda is one of my favourites and the one ship I'd pick if I was limited to just one ship. It can do all kinds of non-specialized jobs well enough. Very much looking forward for the eventual rework of the interior at some point in the future since it's a little dated.
Two minor things you left out: The beds double as escape pods and the top personnel hatch. Though the both are about as useful as of now so no real issue there. Which speaks a lot about the hatch when escape pods don't work yet.

    • @Farrister

I'm very surprised I didn't show the top hatch too! The beds less so - they don't yet double as escape pods. So unless and until we get that, I err on the side of "it's not in game" :D

I think it would be really helpful to a lot of unhappy backers to get an objective and informed reading on what the new revisions for this ship have done, and whether you see it having a valid role in the game, especially at the sale price. He identifies them and stays away, then we come in fully crewed and he backstabs them when needed. I love my Connie even if it isn't as polished as some other ships. I think it's the perfect balance between combat and cargo for me. The drop down cargo ramp is particularly useful when you want to load or unload quickly. In group play to use it to carry around an additional friend in a small fighter or snub like an M50 or Fury. Two small ships plus your own weapons, missiles, and turrets can make a Connie a real threat to all kinds of things.

Gotta get that refined Quant to market somehow and the rental is also perfect for grinding out bounty reputation with the added bonus of being able to loot all the cargo along the way. It needs a bit of love and attention, but it's a pretty great ship. I still have mine and it was the second ship I bought (first was nomad, of course), but this was the logical next step and great value for money. Corsair is flashy and all and also great, but my wings and engine tend to break off alot of the fights, so Andromeda still is my favorite. I did substitute the merlin with the archimedes as soon as I could. As soon as you can exchange the turrets, I'll move to the Aquila with two gun turrets; all because of the windscreen...

This was the ship that sold the game to me as one of the original funding packs and mt first ship. It's had a rough path but still my favorite rivaled only by the Cutlass Black. It went from a joke to the top kill scoring ship for Xeno Threat. I got the Emerald Edition Phoenix too. The bunk beds are also escape pods when those become a thing when laying in them. The Archimedes is a nice alternative option for the snub that doesn't need ammo. The stock industrial QD is slow af but efficient with a good size fuel tank but Crossfield is a cheap compromise. While stuck in only Stanton go Mil A on everything and you can go anywhere from anywhere in 5 mins or less generally. The stock S4 gimbal weapon loadout is optimal IMO with missile flavor to taste. Soon it can run quad instead of dual S5s with gimbal since the bottom gimbals are bespoke to the landing legs for clearance and can't be removed like the top ones. Quad S4s chew fighters plenty hard and even medium ships sweat it.
If you love the Cutlass Black but want just a little more of everything with its own iconic style this is the ship. Its versatile and fast to get around in and do whatever you feel like solo or with a few friends as a JOAT boat. For lore it's a space/landing patrol gunship and fleet escort. All those missiles and agile enough firepower and snub is solid package for swatting fighters around caps.

  • @RiddleTime
    @RiddleTime ปีที่แล้ว +3

I use the Taurus instead, I don't think for me who's mostly playing solo the extra turret and snub fighter make sense. Coming from the Freelancer Max the extra cargo space with the Taurus is what I got it for. More profits!

I live in expectation of either an overhaul for the connie or tali or for something smaller ix xsection than the Corsair. The pilot weapons and utility of the connie with the ability to flex in either solo or multicrew is exactly what I want from a ship. The MSR is so undergunned, the Redeemer is a pain solo, the Vanguard has no utility. You're left with the Corsair and Connie, but the connie is so rough and the Corsair's wingspan bugs me.
Remote turrets swapped for the manned turrets, ability to go full fixed s5 or gimballed s4 (though citcon said gimbals won't be sized down anymore soon which means the connie is gonna have problems with projectile velocity but almost double its DPS), and an expansion of the living quarters into a portion of the bridge space and I will go back to my connie immediately :D

The connie andromeda is a bit like the cutty black: way too good and versatile for its class. That doesn't mean I hate it, quite the contrary, I love that thing! The issue is that there's no real competition in terms of versatility. Sure corsair, yadda yadda, but that thing doesn't come with a goddamn snub fighter attached to it! If CIG someday in the future decides to actually fix the 2 size 4 hardpoints into proper size 5s as they were meant to, it could even rival the firepower of the corsair. I really wish they'd revisit the idea of docking ports for snubs on other ships.

I used to have a Constellation Andromeda and a Taurus in my ASOP for quantanium delivery and bounty hunting, but now CIG has nerfed it to become slower, less ‘agile’ than a Corsair, which has far better DPS.
With shield holes in previous patches, hits from the front hemisphere used to damage the tail of the Connie, so the snub fighter was basically a bomb that could rip a nacelle off.

As much a small I like it, I can't help but have no regret melting this thing : it has a terrible interior, there are bugs in it like the very annoying phasing bug under the beds where you can literally see outside as if there is a hole in the ship, the damn table (its only interior amenities) doesn't work, the snub fighter dlaunching doesn't work for some people and even if it does there's always the risk of losing the ship marker, there is also the fact that you can only change 2 of the 4 repeaters, the fact that this thing tends to tip forward when you land too quickly due to the landing gears being all located at the rear of the ship, there's also the problems that come with the elevators like the fact that all elevators tend to be buggy depending on the patch or that you need to land on perfectly flat terrain otherwise the elevator will either be too high making it impossible to use ground vehicles or even sometimes getting in your ship or too low in which case it can phase through the ground making the ship take damage and potentially explode... by all accounts this ship is unfinished and I feel like that's why people often tend to avoid it

Hi Farrister! Great review of the Constellation Andromeda. I've always like the Connie's. I've flown the Andromeda, but I don't own one. I have an Aquila which is similar, although it has more fuel capacity and a slightly different cockpit. It only has one manned turret and the front glass is rounded over faceted. It has the same cargo capacity and a Merlin snub fighter. The second turret is a scanner. I started running cargo in it and made a good bit doing it. Of course I decided to get a ship capable of carrying a bit more when I bough my Freelancer MAX. I still like my Connie and have no thoughts of giving it up. Thanks for the review. Keep up the great work. Take care, fly safe, and I'll see you in the verse.

When i first started the game i bought the Connie Taurus (it was on special for $150) and i got the Andromeda as a loaner until it came out, The connie is what made me fall in love with the game as it allowed me to engage in every aspect of the game at the time and be pretty good at all of them, im pretty sure the Andromeda still has the highest pilot DPS in the game by far especially if you put 2 S5s on the top, which is great for PVE bounty missions.... though i could be wrong. I'll continue to defend the connie to all the haters lol - Unless they have changed it you can't put 4 S5s?

I used to have a Taurus cause I was like still the same pilot firepower (just less missiles) and the only "downside" being 33% less hull hp (the middle hull cause it's now elongated storage), but with the same strength shield that didn't matter much unless you often decide to stay in combat when shields are down.
I also didn't value that merlin that much (this was in the time when you couldn't undock it and was just stuck), meanwhile the taurus got that shielded storage bit there and a tractor beam bottom turret while retaining the top combat turret, so for the longest time I still did missions in my Taurus, until recently when I upgraded it to the andromeda, just to have that more hull hp and more missiles as I never really do any hauling anyway (I'd prefer proper hauling contracts, not just single boxes, more akin to something like EVE online has, then I'd haul more).
Overall I just like the feel of the ship, the handling, the sounds it makes, the nose dip landing and the looks.
I did try a corsair (it was fun with 4x AD5B and 2x AD4B on the wings), but it just didn't feel the same even if the quality was much higher obviously.
In the end I'd steer newer players with some money to spend to a cutty black or constellation taurus, but the still point the more budget focused ones to the likes of the avenger.

QD choice will become interesting considering Stanton is a very small solar system. A mil drive might no longer allow traversal through a whole system. But of course QT stats could get overhauled, too.
And I can confirm that hull repair can become expensive. I lost a nacelle in a server-desynched hangar entry and the repair costs shown were 57K aUEC.
I love the straight-through design of the Connie, its oldschool styling and the powerful front gunpower. (Which is not just expressed in its hardpoints but in its large capacitor and fast recharge.)
BTW, you said 4xS4 gimbaled by default but AFAIK the lower ones are still locked to gimbal for ground clearance reasons. (But I'd not fly with S5 anyway, unless I need the attractive higher range for something. Bunker turrets used to be easier that way, but now that weapons can lock on to them, gimbals are just fine.)

awesome ship review there Farrister... will say though while the Connie Andromeda is the more multirole of them all... which allows for so much versatility, that Snub fighter can often be the undoing... I personally would love to see a variant with an aft ball turret in place of the snub, similar cargo to the Taurus or Andromeda, and lengthen the bridge area to accommodate a captain's chair, in place of the pilot seat... and swap a copilot seat out for a pilot control... and replace the cockpit window with the one from the Aquilla as that feels far more functional....
RSI's ships often scream Star Trek, with how their nacelles and internals are aesthetically... with the exception of the Scorpius, being more Star Wars inspired
the Andromeda can hold upto an Ursa rover or 2 cyclones, 4 STV's etc... i wouldn't attempt to load anything bigger though as fireworks and large explosive events may take place following a little disagreement between said larger vehicle and the ship's hull...
the Taurus i personally prefer for cargo as it has 174SCU cargo capacity and a shielded cargo section at the rear where the snub would be... and while that loses the lower turret and it gains a tractor beam, also that loses much of the missile compliment in favour of cargo capacity, and loses the Snub which imo isn't a bad thing, as that seems to be a week point for the Connies with snubs.... the Phoenix looks like it is another growing favourite of mine, not been a fan of Luxury ships so the 600i 890J etc are some i tend to avoid, however i have found myself liking the 300 series of ships and the 400i a fair amount so the Phoenix is that balanced kind of feel between the aesthetics of the Origin luxury and the rugged, function of RSI, along with a good amount of firepower... and the cargo/vehicle bay on the Phoenix is enclosed which offers some nice loops when doing hot drops....
the Connie line is very stable in atmo too which is going to be a plus when going too and from missions and cargo quotas
thanks for another awesome and on point video Farrister, i look forward to the next one 🙂

Should CIG decide to give the Connie a long overdue refresh, with components and a decent living quarter, it will sell gorgeously well: it still is the best medium ship, function wise and the only thing keeping it back is the price and the missing "cool factor". A Taurus has been in my hangar since day one and it always will, together with a Caterpillar and a 315p. they may not be the most modern or hyped ships, but in use, they always prove they are better then the competition because they are thought with Utility in mind, rather then just the "Rule of cool"

I love the constellation andromeda. especially over the corsair. i could never get that elevator in the corsair to work right and the wings make its a pain in the butt to land in a hanger. the connie however only has the hazy screen being the only demerit i have for it. zips right into a hanger easy as pie, all elevators work great (so great that you won't get your ship stolen if you leave it down) and if you use rattlers, it makes it feel like you have 203 size 1 missiles (since the rattler are basically 7 size 1's) and i love me that missile storm. Let us not forget it has so many screens in your vision that you can have all the different screen types active.
Im also a solo player that sometimes has a friend pop in to join so its great to have a ship that can solo beautifully and yet work great with a crew

If you play with friends, the Andromeda wins the cake over the Corsair. It has significantly more missiles, comes with turrents that are actually useful, has more cargo and the icing on the cake is the Merlin. No ship of this size has a bespoke snub that actually performs great in combat.

  • @reavern

The Constellation was my original pledge ship and consequently it holds a special place in my cold, dead heart. ;) The Connie is a good multi-role, multi-crew ship and it's probably in the best place it's been since it became flyable... however, it has major flaws and feels incredibly outdated by CIG's current ship design standards.
The worst and most obvious issue is its terrible cockpit visibility. Those stupid horizontal struts and seams in the middle of the cockpit canopy obstruct the pilot's view and are unbearably annoying. The Aquila version sorta corrects this with its semi-circle shaped cockpit canopy, but it restricts the pilot's view at the top and bottom edges, so it has compromised visibility too.
The Connie's most outdated features are its VTOL turbo-lift fans. I understand that, originally, CIG made those VTOL fans RSI's distinctive style, but that was 10 years ago! More recent RSI ships like the Scorpius, Mantis, and Galaxy don't have the VTOL fans, so CIG should omit and replace them. It appears CIG has sorta done that by giving the VTOL fans an electric glow, implying they're not mechanic spinning propellers anymore, but that's just a half-measure.
One of the biggest letdowns for me about the Connie is its (semi-) fixed engine nacelles. While they do slide forward and back when shifting from flight to landing mode, they don't pivot like they're supposed to, based on early ship model concepts. The Connie should be able to swivel its engine nacelles 180 degrees and fly in reverse at full power. Instead, the nacelle's don't move at all, making the Connie look excruciatingly RIGID in flight -- somehow making the Caterpillar look graceful in comparison!
The Constellation needs a total overhaul and rework, and I'm certain CIG plans on doing it eventually. I think the RSI Galaxy and Apollo will positively influence the Connie's redesign.

How much formal SCU of the unladen 96 is left over after loading an URSA Rover? Put differently, how much formal cargo space does the URSA Rover force you to sacrifice when loaded (whether one bought separately for an Andromeda, or the Aquila's inclusive one)? There is a $275 Andromeda game package at the moment and as I finally get my wife into the Persistent Universe this gives her a snub fighter, cargo hauler, bounty platform, exploration, yada yada blah blah (I've been playing since 2013 so no need to elaborate on anything other than my core question, saving everyone time and energy lol). TL;DR: if loading a Rover or, better yet, a ROC, knocks out the cargo gameplay loop by sacrificing all 96 default SCU we'll need to know as part of making intelligent, fully-informed decisions. Frankly, even a modest...or heck, meager...amount of leftover SCU after loading a Rover or ROC is enough for me to proceed in confidence with this package here at the 11th hour as it were (specific to this year's IAE shutting down late tomorrow, taking with it the usual litany of compelling vehicles/packages temporarily on sale).

I can never make up my mind about the Constellation line. On the one hand I like how the back looks, but the face is hideous. The cockpit has great visibility even with the struts, but the struts are annoying at the worst times. The interior (especially for the Phoenix) looks amazing, but the luxury section clashes with the rest of the utilitarian section. It's a very divisive ship for me for sure.

Another thing about the Andromeda is that if you have a 4 person crew, the person who could jump in the snub fighter could instead decide to co-pilot and use missile operator mode and just lob missiles instead of taking the risk of getting blown up in a small craft. The way the ship fires missiles upwards means that it can target and fire at ships outside the normal firing arc of the pilot weapons. Also, missile mode used by a co-pilot means that the pilot doesn't have to stop shooting guns in order to switch to missiles.
I think the missile boats like Andromeda, Freelancer MIS, etc. will really come into their own once servers actually let missiles function correctly.
