It's that tendency to consistently play just slightly ahead of the beat, it creates a certain feel. Works really well with Mastodon's earlier works I'd say. Greyson Nekrutman comes to mind as well, that concept is even more pronounced in his playing, it's like he just can't wait to play the next bar!
