That radio had incredible sound back in the day. Those loudspeakers alone make the set worth rebuilding and restoring to like-new condition. It would take some dedication and quite some time however, and our Shango is probably not interested in doing that kind of work. He should direct the owner to the channel RestoreOldRadios here on TH-cam, who would restore every part of this very worthy radio to new condition.

I never want to take the time to pull those guys chain when I get a phone call. I still don't know how they grab someones caller ID, but "Microsoft" seems to be popular with them. I got one from "Verizon" a few weeks ago.
I am saddened to hear about Aussie50--I've watched many of his videos, and he seemed like a nice guy, and an interesting character as well. I agree about that set being too far gone to restore--that's one where you really need a parts set to make it right
I'm in Scotland UK and found that interesting. I was professionaly involved in fixing TVs from 1967 until 1990, and still do the odd one. I am familiar with those valve classifications as used by Mullard and other manufacturers. I have repaired the odd radio in my time, and still have 2 valve equivalent books somewhere. That Grundig looked like it came from we call a skip, and you'd call a dumpster! Did you notice the Shamrock on the front? That is no doubt because Grundig had/has? a factory in Northern Ireland. My mum had a reel to reel Grundig tape recorder back then, which also had that logo. I repaired Grundig TVs along with other brands in my career. The best of luck with all future repairs. Jim.

This tests the depths of my knowledge a little. L = Pentode , C = Triode. The EL95s are likely to be your amp valves, the ECC83 is a double triode, possibly pre-amp stage. I once had a Grundig Stereogram, which had a single ELL80, for Stereo amplification. I accidently broke this incredibly thin walled valve, and at the time (mid 1990s), I was unable to source another. I was advised that I could create an adaptor to fit two EL84s to the single ELL80 socket, I never got as far as that, sadly. I hardly have any Valve equipment left, as I tend to focus more on 1980s Consumer electronics (see my channel :) ) but, I do have a Heathkit S88A stereo valve amp, which I need to restore at some point, and a couple of valve radios, for old times sake.

I finally found an ac-dc portable GE superadio at a flea market in Manxhester TN. It's in top shape and works perfect. For ten bucks I couldn't turn it down. It has beautiful reception and good bass response. Did not have to do any work on this radio Even the pots were clean with no static. Hope I can find a Zenith royal 3000 some day at a cheap price. My cousin has one at her condo in Florida. (she lives in Spain) I told her if she ever sells the place to let me have the radio, its in fine shape. I don't think she cares much one way or the other, its just a radio to her. Besides she isn't there that much anyway. I am there more than she is.
Those wima capacitors are very common in German built sets sold over here in the uk. Ive always known them as toffee capacitors and they are always leaky. Ipod dock is what id do with it, Ps the EL95 is basically a 6V6 crammed into a tiny envelope. they do run bloody hot tho.

I bought a broken Grundig modern transistor set AM/FM/SW/1/2/3. The only thing wrong with it was that someone's dog chewed up the battery cover and a little plate on the back. Well I found the parts on EBAY and replaced them and had a great little radio. My good wife borrowed it, and kept the little radio for over a damn year, when I finally got it back, had taken it from her gal cave to the damn kitchen where it accumulated about a quarter inch of grease on the case. Took me a MONTH of cleaning to get down to plastic once again, but I did it. Looks like new once again and works great still. I gave the wife a nice replica of an old radio and she is using that, however she is NOT happy as she loved my little Grundig. Perhaps I will give it back some day.
I know that chocolaty capacitors well, my job was to repair European TVs radios, tape recorders and even eastern EU and Russian for long time, that caps are known to go bad more than 50 years ago, they are junk, like vintage wax caps now, even when they were new, just get rid of them if you want to restore that radio, Grundig is a good German brand, the cabinet of that radio is in very good shape, I restored one almost as the same as that one, still working perfectly with unbelievable sensitive reception even without antenna, I restored many vintage radios, non of them has the reception and audio quality like Grundig, worth to try.
I’m not sure what it is, but I really love these German radios. They’re so unusual but almost always sound incredible when they work. Most of the time that is. Loved that new meter you’re using. Got a model number for it?
The outside doesn't look too bad. Even without the antennas, if you reWIMA it, it might make for a nice garage audio player (it probably already was one judging from the rust). It even has the super modern DIN sockets, none of that banana rubbish. Those WIMA tootsee rolls are pretty common in European stuff I think; I've seen them before. The company is still in business by the way. And I'm pretty sure it's pronounced "weema".
The interior of this reminds me of the one I discovered in a cow shed.. KID you NOT! Having grown up on a farm (Cornwall UK) and yes milk yields were supposed to increase if the cows listened to music during milking sessions et ... 😗🙄🤣 The one I lifted down was almost the same on the inside.. that in fairness got binned... it was an American forces imported radio.. had sub miniature valves AND the power transformer had been modified for 240v UK use.

It's almost a miracle you got it working at all. Still good for parts! And yes, those brown WIMA capacitors always have to go, that's for sure.

WIMA caps are almost as infamous as RIFA ones, they'll either smoke or smoke something before them. Not seen those black ones that i can recall but there's some similar looking blue ones that can be suspect too.

I was wondering if I could get your help,,, I'm trying to replace the foam on a small set of 8" Marantz woofer and I'm wondering if there is any way to remove the dust cap without cutting it off with a razor blade? Das Ding hat nicht im Badezimmer gestanden sondern bei Walther White (Heisenberg) im Heizungsraum Gestanden, so Verrostet und Vergammelt das Chassis ist ;=) . The "candy"-capacitors are called "WIMA-Bonbon"="WIMA-candy" in Germany ^^ They all have to be changed... often bad. All countries had their special paper-capacitor-nightmare.
Shango, can you talk a bit about the effects of corrosion and oxidation on contacts, switches, tube pins, jumper plugs, screw terminals, etc. typically found in vintage electronics? I just spent a couple hours chasing down low output in the IF amp stage of a German radio, especially noticeable on AM, weak local signals, etc. Long story short; it turned out one of the pins on the EF89 was apparently oxidized in the socket and wasn't making full contact. A shot of DeOxit and some pin-stroking cured it immediately. (Just imagine if I had started cutting out capacitors!) Great channel by the way.
I am just watching this now as I have recently inherited a Grundig 4019 which is very similar to this set. These sets are stereo for the Phono / Tape input only. It's well before FM stereo. It is a weird stereo line where lowpass is mono and only the high frequencies are stereo. It kind of makes sense when you look over it. They have a really great sound when working, but this 4006 you have in this video is pretty far gone. They had a ferrite rod and coil antenna, not an actual loop as such, but I guess that is what you meant by loop antenna.
Alright so I've got a question. I found an old solid state radio with a built in amplifier and no matter what input is selected or where the volume is at it plays static through the speakers. Any ideas?

I love how they bridged the L and R channels via a dedicated transformer with crossover to extract low frequency mono at higher power output for the woofer. Love to get one of these for my den in the near future. They must sound amazing....

Tnx for yet another interesting video. I would really like to se you finish this project. I wonder if the loop antenna is the BC antenna coil ? Try hock a signal tracer (with a germanium detector diode) to pin 2 of the ECH81 tube (grid of the if amp) switch to BC band and try tune in some stations. (The tubes in this set are the "European ? (Norwegian) version" of AA5 except for the audio output tubes). You can probbably replace the loop antenna with the loop antenna from the red/blue China DIY set you did a few years ago ? or 80-100 turns of 3mm (8 gauge ) wire around a toilet paper roll. Any old AA5 antenna coil will probbably do the job ? Btw most of this tubes can be substituted with cheap Russian tubes.. ECC85 - 6N1P, ECH81 - 6i1P, EABC80 - 6G3P, ECC83 - 6N2P, EM84 eye tube - 6E3P(/6E2 : You may need to swap the resistors to get the eye to close fully). EL95 - 6DL5. Btw.. It was sad to hear about your friend.
I assumed the WIMA caps were plastic film. Maybe they are paper. Regarding plastic film, the data sheets do specify maximum soldering time/temperature. I guess you can melt the film and maybe cause a short.
They are WIMA Caps. I believe the more recent ones (mid to late 80's) have a nasty reputation of blowing up in test gear. Dave Jones had fun with one recently. Not sure about the older ones... They are old anyways.
EL 95's were very common in US import Grundig sets, especially the higher end ones that used a pair in push pull. The top of the line stereo5490 had 4 of them. EL84's were found mostly in the Grundig single ended output sets.
That set is in very bad condition, Was expecting a smoke cloud to happen after you released the electrons. Looks like it was in a very moist environment like a steam room. 33k 1 Watt at 200 Volts will go up in smoke. Wima is a European made Capacitor. Never seen that style before either, Wima's are usually red rectangular. ( I usually type matters up as the video progresses)
I have a Grundig Radio/Record player. All tubes lite up. Do not see any cloudy tops. But have zero sound. Not even cracking. 1st time in over 50 years that I have worked on tubes type. It looks like it has been taken care of, even have the org papers and books. Would I be best in replacing tubes and see?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You can use a toilet paper roll to wind an am antenna. You need a PHD in geometry to restring the dial cord

Learned many years ago that WIMA capacitors were unreliable and prone to shorting. If you find any in your vintage equipment, just change them.

In Texas when I was in the Army, they called those "root beer" caps.

The reason bass isn't panned left or right goes back to vinyl days. Apparently the stylus jumped out of the groove if panned.

those wima capacitors were the gearem version of our bumble bombs,
WIMA caps are almost as infamous as RIFA ones, they'll either smoke or smoke something before them. Not seen those black ones that i can recall but there's some similar looking blue ones that can be suspect too.
Hi Shango066,,, I realize this is off topic here but in one of your videos I recently watched you said that you did speaker re-coning on JBL and other speaker.. I was wondering if I could get your help,,, I'm trying to replace the foam on a small set of 8" Marantz woofer and I'm wondering if there is any way to remove the dust cap without cutting it off with a razor blade? Say some type of solvent or glue remover that won't damage the speaker cone? Thank you. Terence.

I think those plates of the capacitor were supposed to be bent out to tweak it slightly
Go between the plates with very fine sandpaper The plates may have grown hairs causing the plates to touch each other. Do not bend the plates. They could break off

I recently repaired a similar Grundig 2120. The push button switch contacts were badly corroded, so I had to wire it for FM only.

The "candy"-capacitors are called "WIMA-Bonbon"="WIMA-candy" in Germany ^^ They all have to be changed... often bad. All countries had their special paper-capacitor-nightmare.
Shango, can you talk a bit about the effects of corrosion and oxidation on contacts, switches, tube pins, jumper plugs, screw terminals, etc. typically found in vintage electronics? I just spent a couple hours chasing down low output in the IF amp stage of a German radio, especially noticeable on AM, weak local signals, etc. Long story short; it turned out one of the pins on the EF89 was apparently oxidized in the socket and wasn't making full contact. A shot of DeOxit and some pin-stroking cured it immediately. (Just imagine if I had started cutting out capacitors!)

I would also turn that into a parts set. Much as Grundig sets are good, the set is going to need far too much to make it a viable repair.

I am just watching this now as I have recently inherited a Grundig 4019 which is very similar to this set. These sets are stereo for the Phono / Tape input only. It's well before FM stereo. It is a weird stereo line where lowpass is mono and only the high frequencies are stereo. It kind of makes sense when you look over it. They have a really great sound when working, but this 4006 you have in this video is pretty far gone. They had a ferrite rod and coil antenna, not an actual loop as such, but I guess that is what you meant by loop antenna.
Alright so I've got a question.
I found an old solid state radio with a built in amplifier and no matter what input is selected or where the volume is at it plays static through the speakers. Any ideas?

7:00 eating steak = shooting up meth. Germans did such an awesome job in their design and spared little expense. I love how they bridged the L and R channels via a dedicated transformer with crossover to extract low frequency mono at higher power output for the woofer. Love to get one of these for my den in the near future. They must sound amazing....

I need a little experience with these german vintage radios, the last video you mentioned with the tuner cap fault frustrated me. Too bad about Aussie50... He self EOL, What a way to go. Tnx for yet another interesting video. I would really like to se you finish this project. I wonder if the loop antenna is the BC antenna coil ? Try hock a signal tracer (with a germanium detector diode) to pin 2 of the ECH81 tube (grid of the if amp) switch to BC band and try tune in some stations. (The tubes in this set are the "European ? (Norwegian) version" of AA5 except for the audio output tubes). You can probbably replace the loop antenna with the loop antenna from the red/blue China DIY set you did a few years ago ? or 80-100 turns of 3mm (8 gauge ) wire around a toilet paper roll. Any old AA5 antenna coil will probbably do the job ?
Btw most of this tubes can be substituted with cheap Russian tubes.. ECC85 - 6N1P, ECH81 - 6i1P, EABC80 - 6G3P, ECC83 - 6N2P, EM84 eye tube - 6E3P(/6E2 : You may need to swap the resistors to get the eye to close fully).
EL95 - 6DL5.

I assumed the WIMA caps were plastic film. Maybe they are paper. Regarding plastic film, the data sheets do specify maximum soldering time/temperature. I guess you can melt the film and maybe cause a short.

They are WIMA Caps. I believe the more recent ones (mid to late 80's) have a nasty reputation of blowing up in test gear. Dave Jones had fun with one recently. Not sure about the older ones... They are old anyways.

Interesting to see EL95 in a German radio for output, instead of EL84 (6BQ5).
EL 95's were very common in US import Grundig sets, especially the higher end ones that used a pair in push pull. The top of the line stereo5490 had 4 of them. EL84's were found mostly in the Grundig single ended output sets.
@Boss Günter Yes, ECL82 and later ECL86 were used in many european radios. And PCL82 and PCL86 were used for sound output in TV sets.

That set is in very bad condition, Was expecting a smoke cloud to happen after you released the electrons. Looks like it was in a very moist environment like a steam room. 33k 1 Watt at 200 Volts will go up in smoke. Wima is a European made Capacitor. Never seen that style before either, Wima's are usually red rectangular. ( I usually type matters up as the video progresses)
no electrostatic tweeters in this model? a lot of the earlier grundig majectics had electrostatic tweeters
I have a Grundig Radio/Record player. All tubes lite up. Do not see any cloudy tops. But have zero sound. Not even cracking. 1st time in over 50 years that I have worked on tubes type. It looks like it has been taken care of, even have the org papers and books. Would I be best in replacing tubes and see?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
