wow, love how this building's turning out mate!...somehow I managed to completely miss this build series...and I thought I'd watched nearly all of your videos! ...I've just been going back and watching the smaller quick-build foamboard vids, because I've finally tracked down a couple of local places to buy that stuff...I just bought a couple of 3mm A2 sheets of it just to get a feel for it, used about half a sheet so far, and got something fairly similar to your quickbuild one...still got a ways to go with adding more three-dimensional detail, rubble, etc...but I gotta say, that foamboard is great fun to work with - and of course all your great tips and advice have helped me out a lot and saved me a lot of pain in getting started, so thanks loads for all that mate! ...something you might want to have a play around with if you haven't already, cork tiles - I picked up a 6-pack of 6mm-thick, square foot cork tiles for ooh, I guess about 6-7 pounds? (AU$13.50) from the flooring section of my local big DIY-type store...so that's pretty cheap for 6 square feet of potential terrain material, and it's nice and easy to work with, just cut it up with a stanley/hobby knife, like you would with the foamboard...or you can just snap chunks off it, crumble it up right down to small crumbs if you want...it's great stuff for any kind of rubble, slabs of broken wall/pavement/road/rock...heck, it might even work for building an actual structure...I may test that myself at some point actually, though it might prove to be a bit too brittle or flexible or something for actual structural purposes...it's still great stuff for model bases and general rubble though - and you can work real quickly with it too, since you can glue it with superglue
I think if it were me- and I confess I'm more of a 'maker' than a gamer- I'd leave some rooms filled with rubble and some part filled with some mostly cleared out, the idea being maybe they're in the process of clearing it to use for cover? So you get a blend of playability and 'natural' ruin look. That's just a wild suggestion.
I started doing this on my last build and it's a really good effect. I also used it for rubble piles in the middle or you could for just random rubble piles as scatter terrain. One material you can also use is plastic coffee stirrers, the small round ones, cut up to represent pipes. I have some in my pile of terrain materials but haven't tried it yet. Oh and as a side note when they announced the new Terminator minis game I thought of these tutorials right away for making terrain. They'd be perfect.
When doing rubble or any other kind of surfacing on terrain it's worth keeping in mind your models bases, not just for whether a piece is accessible. When doing a ground covering if your bases aren't completely flat (the base is elevated with a hollow space in between the edge that actually sits on the table) you may want to check that whatever your surface your laying doesn't have pieces that rise high enough/just out enough that it tilts the bases of models placed on top. While you could fix it by just removing the offending pieces, doing it on what was a finished piece and then having either a empty patch or having to refill that spot isn't the greatest experience. Two things for Mel: 1. Can you still make out the detail you carved into the floor beneath all that grit? Seems like you did a lot of work on the floors only to obscure it with a layer of grit. 2. Did you ever get to use this piece with your guard and how did it go? Also was that area of 3rd floor/roof big enough to sit a heavy weapons team because that'd be killer (literally in some models cases). Bases must make it difficult to set up your heavy weapons teams in a building where it looks like they've set up a nest since their bases put them with a minimum distance from the walls, windows and such. IDK why I'm complaining about that when I'm not a Imperial Guard player (as of now). Anyways, awesome work Mel. Everytime I think you can't possibly add anything else to a piece to take it up a notch without leaving me in the dust as to how I could replicate that you suprise me. Everytime.

I'd think that filling in the ground floor with rubble would be quite a good way to go. The rubble choked ground floor would block line of sight, while the upper floor would provide cover. I picked up some nice rubble from a war games show. The folk selling it do some resin casting and pour the left overs into a shallow tray, let it set and then smash it up. This gives you little chunks of resin with two smoothish sides and broken edges. It was a great buy at around £1 a bag ;) Another informative video... Gluemageddon :D :D :D The model is looking great.

What's cool about this other than the technique itself is that this is basically how video game designers make a worldspace and 3d models. They have textures over meshes and LOD to trick the eye much in the same way the basic shapes like the wedges coated in paints, washes, highlighting, and sealants. Great video TTT. I appreciate that you share this style with the world. Just out of curiosity, have you heard of AlFigures here on youtube? He makes 1/12th scale dioramas for the Marvel and Wrestling figures out of insulation foam boards. He does a lot of graffiti art on the dioramas too. I highly suggest his channel. I'd be interested in the materials, techniques and colors that you would use to adapt this to half-timbered medieval style cottages and buildings instead of concrete structures. I'm building a Mordheim table with MDF buildings and I'm sprucing them up with wall textures and rubble I'd be curious as to how you go about this!

baelliott79 There's nothing there that a novice couldn't do mate so it's just down to time mate. There's probably 10 hours work in the build without the filming :-)
Looks like you got the lighting sorted out better Mel. Very clear and shadow free. Did you color those different grits or did they come that way? I dont remember if you said. And where did you get it? Did I miss an episode?

Great video! Lots of great ideas for adding rubble and making buildings look realistic. I particularly like the use of fascia.

Plastic Bendy straws make really good industrial piping as well, iv got a big ole bag of them in my terrain making stuff for factories and the like :)
