I recognize the voice of the mother of the ringleader. It’s longtime Webb veteran Peggy Webber. She was part of at least ten TV episodes and as many radio episodes. She played Friday’s mother on radio! She’s still with us at age 95

Jack Webb made a B&W TV episode based on this story. It was the first TV series made in B&W in the 1950's.
The episode is titled " The Big War " , Season 7 episode 28 ( 1958 ). It is also available free here on TH-cam.

Jack Webb and How Friday were different people, Joe was a clean cut boy scout, didn't drink, smokes like a locomotive,Mr Webb was very different, although you have to wonder if joe was either Asexual or homosexual

Good Grief - Mother in denial about her son. Of-course, she has to blame someone and it's the police. Joe had another great ending line though.

Gotta remember, this aired only 7 years after the war and Hitler's suicide. Memories were fresh and Hitler was in everyday conversations.

Mom's reaction to her son's death is a prime example of cognitive dissonance.
She can not accept that her little Angel could do anything wrong.

And then at the end, she had the nerve to blame the police!

Fast forward to 2021 and this story is the New Normal - Murderers are innocent and Cops are to blame

Murder? I would think self-defense. I mean the kid was hitting me in the head with a chain. Who knows

Oooooohh! Apparently if some punk repeatedly beats you across the face with a chain, you'll go to jail for defending yourself!! They never heard of self defense??????

I thought the same thing. What kind of lawyer did that kid have?

    • @KororaPenguin

If I had to guess, I'd say that his involvement in the gang war made the difference and that if he'd been an innocent bystander caught in the middle and struck at an assailant it'd have been a different story.

Although I understand that cigarette sponsors were big at that time I lost both of my parents to smoking related illness. I’ve never taken a puff in my life. Not the longest day I live.
