Hi, a Japanese here two years later. Not only his pronunciation, but his choice of words and sense of humor is adjusted to English speakers. Having spent 17years of my life abroad, I can vouch that this is extremely rare in Japan. Maybe the secret is that he is from Okinawa. The US military base is pretty much a part of your life there. But then again, one can sense how intelligent he is, if he actually picked upped the basics there and studied beyond that. Amazing.

Nah, it's not just you. There's always been an underlying tiredness/sadness behind his cool exterior and weird jokes, even back in Malice Mizer days. He claims he actually has social anxiety and is an introvert, but forces himself to do the opposite of who he is, which makes every public interaction seem a bit (very) forced.

Look at any Japanese game show, everyone is over the top, wacky, silly, trying to be loud and act crazy to get a rise out of the audience because the Japanese usually are very serious and take things that are said seriously. You need to outmatch their energy to get them to laugh. even jokes. You can't make monotone-sarcastic-edgy/dark jokes to a Japanese person out of the blue and expect a chuckle or laugh, they will think you're being serious and or wonder if you're crazy. Like if Gackt had told a normal interviewer that Malice Mizer guys are dead, no one would laugh, and they'd seriously wonder if the guys were dead or if Gackt is mentally ill lmao. But all throughout this video, Gackt is clearly being sarcastic and making jokes about almost everything, something that I feel mainly a western audience would realize, and it is funny as hell because I know he's being a goof and almost everything he says is to mess with Joey.
yeah, other than in niche places like futaba, people are never sarcastic here and mainstream humor is absolute shit. any westerner couldn’t stand 5 minutes of japanese tv here. it’s not that we are incapable of sarcasm, it’s more that it’s very frowned upon and not a good characteristic. people like to pretend they are clueless and goody goody but people here can be just as bad as anyone else, they just hide it better. you can look up the concept of 本音 and 建前. it sums up everything about our culture. people just forget about shit like how Japanese trolls got a little girl (Roro-chan) to literally kill herself, coercing her about how famous she’s going to be after that. and the infinite nationalist threads hating on Koreans and Chinese people that pop up every day at futaba there’s great and awful people here just like everywhere else. also anime is not as popular here as people in the west think, and being too into anime is seen as creepy for the average person. that’s the first shocker that every westerner here gets lmao if you ask the average person about their favorite anime they’re going to say some generic trendy anime or doraemon or whatever this country is not just shibuya or harajuku and if you actually act like someone from those places here in the countryside, you’re just going to get disgusted looks at the train. people forget this country is majorly composed of old farts, not the cringy harajuku lolitas and menhera chans that pop up on their pinterest or something like that. it’s a backwards and aging society with a constantly flunking economy.
