- ADOLPHUS HAILSTORK: "Epitaph for a Man Who Dreamed, in memoriam: Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)"
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
Jerry Hou, conductor
Recorded in Atlanta Symphony Hall, 2021.
Composer Adolphus Hailstork wrote his hauntingly powerful "Epitaph" piece as a personal reflection on the legacy of the great Civil Rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., imagining the heartbreaking scene at his funeral.
Hailstork composed this work a decade after King's assassination as a tactical move to help push for the memorialization of Dr. Martin Luther King with a federal holiday. It was a few short years after the release of Hailstork's piece that President Reagan officially made the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., more commonly known as MLK Day, a federal holiday.
