You have perfectly captured the "experience" of fountain pens -- for sure the pens and all that they entail (finish, weight, nib, etc) is a key piece. But the overall experience is further enhanced by the paper, the ink, and often, the sentimentality that can be attached the various purchases.
What I love is how a new ink in an old pen, or an old ink/pen combination on new paper can provide a new experience. I just love rediscovering new things over and over again, even with pens I have had for over a decade. I really feel like your channel and the people that follow you get this and so for that, I have found my people!

I will have to listen again later. Halfway through, I couldn't quash the urge to open my journal and emote. March 17 has overtones in my family of both melancholy and triumph. At such times a pen is both refuge and a gateway. I'll take the refuge. Then I shall bolt the gate. Things of importance, lurking in ink, must be set free!

When I was a kid (9 ?) , inspired by B&W movies on TV, all of that comes pretty close to why I was interested in "real ink pens". I wanted that wet ink on paper and finality, no erasor. That was how I got my first. And I loved that pen.
Later, when I became an exclusive FP user, in my late teens, the reasons were much different. It was just so much more practical and comfortable. My pens were simple and cheap. But unlike pencils they wrote strong lines for hours without pressure, and unlike ballpoints they always wrote, on any paper and support, every time. Only practical reasons.
Then, about 16-17 years ago, I found I couldn't buy ink at my usual stationary shops anymore, and my three working pens, plastic Parker Vectors, were becoming worn out, so went online and discovered the world of pen nuts and became one myself. It probably helped that by that time I had become older and had "disposable pocket money".

‘Not the case for fountain pens ?’ - Their addiction may lead us to bankruptcy 😉
My obsession started out of the blue 3 years ago and I’ve bought 50-60 fountain pens in this period. Thankfully, I’ve switched to buying inexpensive ‘value for money’ pens these days (like Indian Ebonite pens) and I’m safe !

In a time when everyone seems focused on sustainability and environmentally friendly products, I always remind people that a fountain pen is infinitely better for the environment and way more sustainable than a disposable pen. I find it ironic that very passionate environmentalists often use disposable pens. When the pen runs out, they throw it away! When my pen runs out, I refill it. My great grandchildren may use the same pens I’m using today to write and draw on a daily basis. Just a thought to share with others.

@Steven...very much so. Alas, I've had to tell my students that whilst we may not win the schools 'dead pen society' collection competition (run by another teacher), we in fact are winners on the basis I will not be adding to the collection, other than the never ending cycle of whiteboard pens.
Beyond that, I've found that some of the students have become interested in the writing process, whereas otherwise most are into typing if they like 'writing' at all. Unfortunately, writing is typically seen as antiquated or at best mundane by most.

A marvelous study of art & poetry, way beyond my simpler life. Years ago I discovered the Schaefer fountain pen, Hobby Lobby coupon knocked it down to$6, I can try this! Did so, fine nib too much like a good ball point, wide nib needed an artist to do the strokes justice, medium nib felt just right. Fiddled with it, played with strokes, alphabet styles, some simple mechanical schematics. I am not a disciplined scholar, but had fun as an amateur. I live in California's Central Valley, Kids all live 4 to 5 hrs north & south, we travel abit. This I truly enjoy, (driving my wife nuts is just icing on the cake). When we stop for a break , have a meal at the roadside diner, I flip the paper place mat, break out my pen, and write the first verse of "16 Tons" sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford. The Wait Staff is usually amazed to see one writing with a fountain pen. I leave the verse along with my tip, given a chance to talk with the server I'll explain the history, '30s depression, Company stores and company scrip practices, tell them they need to google the song, still covered by current Pop Singers, and then after this they need to talk with their grandparents (maybe make an interested bond?). I figure I'm famous in a lot break rooms up and down Calif. and a few out of state, all on a cheap fountain pen and a self-taught style. I think a true calligrapher would probable laugh his fanny off, but I feel I'm 'Planting Seeds'. Bill B., Tulare Co. Orange Groves.

One of the best videos on the subject Hemingway. If I may add my experience with the adoption of fountain pens, I would state that the pleasure of the act itself, of expressing one's thoughts by placing ink using a magnificent writing instrument is immeasurably pleasureable. I shall not go into its therapeutic qualities for the mind, what I'll emphasize is that I occasionally commemorate an important achievement or acquisition with one. For example, when I acquired a very rare book on Pliny the Younger's influence on Renaissance Italian art I got myself an exquisite Parker with a silver/gold guilloche pattern. This alone betokens how great I feel about both.

Such an enjoyable and relaxing video!!!! I ask myself often why fountain pens? Especially since I left mine behind back in high school and didn't pick one up again until after age 50. I remember being frustrated with the gel pens running out of ink too quickly ... wondering if there was one I could just refill with ink lol. I had memories of difficulties keeping my old fountain pen writing back in the day. But then, once I found Brian Goulet's Fountain Pen 101 series I got the confidence to pick up a fountain pen again ... knowing lots of tips and tricks existed for cleaning and maintaining them that I never knew about. And now ... I could never look back because the ink color choices, the smoothness of the writing experience and the nib options will always keep me happier with my writing which is almost equal to breathing in my life. If fountain pens didn't exist I'd still be a pen, paper, notebook and color person ... I was this way even as a small child with my child sized desk and seeking colored pencils, paper and all things related ... I had alphabet stampers at age 5. But I sure am glad fountain pens do exist and pen friends who share the joy!!!!!

It wasn't till I started using fountain pens that I realized that ballpoints put down such a blotchy, skipping, uneven, hard-to-control, ugly line. If you are perfectly happy with your 19¢ BiC, think twice before switching, or you may find yourself, like me, buying fountain pens that cost $190. Yes, that's a thousand times more expensive. And believe me, my spending falls around the midddle of the range in this community.

I used a fountain pen when i was in primary school before they invented the modern ink pen. The writing does look much nicer and stylish, but it's awful if you are left handed like me. You end up rubbing wet ink everywhere as ink takes a while to dry.

    • @HemingwayJones
      @HemingwayJones  ปีที่แล้ว +2

It is such a challenge for left handed people. One would need to change their hand position to straight up and down. That’s how one would avoid it but it take practice to change and ballpoints make it easier. It’s sad that it is a struggle. I wish there were instantaneously drying ink. They have fast drying, but from what I hear, not fast enough. My mom managed to change the way she writes and used them without issue. It’s a struggle. All the best and thanks for watching.

Thank you so much! I think those are Esterbrooks if you are referring to the ones at the top. I am going through my entire collection in a few weeks. Thanks so much for the kind words!

Being a nib and bottle man myself for quite some time, I have to say your video does full justice to the hobby. I’d be curious to know your thoughts on different kinds of feeds for pens. My knowledge of feeds is very poor. One thing I do know, however: stay away from Sailor pens - an abomination to the hobby is Sailor.

Thanks so much! I am glad that you enjoyed it. I have been speaking more about feeds lately. Sorry about your experience with Sailor. I have a 1911L and it’s brilliant. Stop by again soon.

Hello and thanks for the great question. Right now, it would be the MB Egyptomania. It is so fun, I love the theme, and it has an amazing nib.
