      💯...this is one of my biggest gripes about all the other youtube channels(there are a couple that share his take) is the idea that if you don't use the most broken overpowered stats, races, classes, gear, spells and so on than your not gonna have fun....I am older(36) and did play the original games when they were new and played them so much that I had to replace them when the disc's wore out because I enjoyed the level of options and wanted to try them all and feel I enjoyed them way more than I would have if being my first dip into dnd had been bombarded with youtube or form sites effectively giving step by step how too's from tge character creator all the way to the credits to always get the "best" results, being older I understand that there are absolutely people who will do that and have a good time but I feel like I'd already completed the game and was done with it if I watched/read someone else do it to "perfection" before ever turning it on...and would most likely shelf it into that "I'll play it later pile" that always seems to grow but never gets smaller.

      @@PxNxWxGxW I hear you. Mikey Spillane had a take on adventure I liked. [paraphrased] "Adventure is when danger happens to competent people." In other words, it isn't entertaining when poorly prepared and unskilled people get steamrolled by events. I always make sure my characters have at least the core competencies to "apply beat stick to enemy." That's my fun. I've gamed with people who have for rp purposes not taken the most "op" choices. They were fun to play with. I've also played with people whose characters were the wrong guy for the situation and nothing but a drag. They were not fun to play with.

    Don't forget the Hirelings option from Withers . When your Partys spellcasters are exhausted prior to an important encounter ( and cannot rest beforehand ) , you can quickly level up a Heal Bot Cleric or arcane caster for thier handy AoE spells and swap them into the Party.

    A couple of tips come to mind. First just because you can have only four party members with you doesn't mean you can't play around with other followers. For example, I am in the midst of a tactician run. My current party is Tav (dual crossbow bard) Karlach (Throw barb), Baezel (open monk) Shart (light cleric/radiant orb build). However, if I need more range magic I have Gale in camp (Lightning build cleric/wizard/soc) or Wyll (Eldritch blaster sorlock build) I can switch in. You can play around with comps for different encounters. Also, it is cheap to respect, only 100 gold that you can steal back. Play around with different builds! Doing this, and watching videos, will teach you good break points (where power spikes happen), these break points are generally when you want to multi class

  • @d.b.hemlock
    @d.b.hemlock 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

    I just beat the game the other day and now moved on to a Tactician run prepping for the Honor Run.
    My tav is a Bardadin. 2 Pal, 10 Swords Bard. Absolutely unbelievably powerful build while also being a literal silver tongue devil. So excellent party face.
    I made Wyll a Sorlock. 2 Warlock/4 Rouge Thief/ X Sorcerer.
    Karlach was a Battle Master fighter. I ran her as a throwing barbarian for quite a long time but ended up enjoying Battle Master more in the end.
    Shadowheart was a Light Domain Cleric. Ran her as Life domain through a lot of Act 1 and switched to Light around the Creche for better spells and more damage. Fireball baby.
    All in all it worked out quite well. But I do admit, having a dedicated Wizard on the team would have been nice. Especially at high levels.

    • @exxy9931

      @@injaymusic792 the first run is always the hardest imo, regardless of the difficulty. My first completed run was on Tactician while trying to knock out some of the boss achievements (which I don't recommend unless you want to suffer like I did, lol). Currently working on an Honour mode run (final build for my face character will be 5 Veng-Pal/5 Swords-Bard/2 War Cleric) and I'd argue it's going better so far than that first full run I did. There are encounters that I know to expect and can prepare for now, there are better streamlines class combos I know, there are mechanics I'm more aware of, I understand the optimization you can make more (have a concentration for each person, finding ways to have better movement variety, bonus action utilization, etc).

      My SH is a light domain Cleric as well and she is so damn good! Her Radiance of the Dawn divination spell is basically a nuke to just drop mid combat or to finish off an entire room of enemies at low health. I also put a couple levels into fighter for action surge and to make her more capable of being IN the fight with the rest of the party. Using her like this lets her warding flares put in a lot of work.

    Good video for beginners, wish it came out 4+ months ago :D I've basically stumbled my way to the exact same thoughts on my own over several playthroughs. One thing I would suggest is planning if you want to go good or bad with your character, and choose party members that go with that. e.g. Astarion and Shadowheart have no problem with you curb stomping folks, but Karlach, Wyll, Jaheira, Minsc all expect you to be good.

    I originally had a lot of trouble understanding the game's mechanics. But once you read how abilities work you start to naturally work out how they can fit together. I had a Barbarian as my party face with only 10 charisma, it wasn't optimal but it made the moment i talked Yurgir into self deletion without save scumming all the more rewarding. There's very few blatantly "wrong" ways to build your character.

  • @OakandIV
    @OakandIV 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Wanted to say how much I enjoy your takes. My default face right now is Tempest 2 - Storm Sorcerer 8 - Wizard 2. Only has Persuasion, Insight, and sometimes Intimidation (if playing Dark Urge), but he can always handle dialogues fine if needed.
    I did a Bard run that had great dialogue options, and I recommend that, but I agree that there’s room for all sorts of builds.
    I kind of want to try a Githzerai Monk Run, and he won’t be much of a talker, but that could be a fun run as well.

    I'd say the main thing of party composition is gear overlaps... Which you don't know during blind playthrough. The rest does not matter in terms of synergy or whatnot, because the game is easy enough.
    I tried to care a lot of synergies and combos, and now I ended up with the idea that you should have at least three people who can deal damage or control or both, and each of them should be able to take a devastating turn on enemies. And they should have minimum gear overlaps. Fourth can have mass healing word + volo ring + dammon gloves + phalar aluve + alert.
    That's the way to try any build in the game.
    Oh, and you need guidance and enhance ability on different characters. That's it.

    Fun little main character build I've been using, currently has 6 lore bard with 2 divination wizard plan to go 10 bard. Wizard spells can be cast with bard slots so i can learn anything, plus I get so much control over the dice with cutting words and portent die for those moments you really need something to work. The only downside so far is that the helm has to be Lumps intellect helm but small price to pay, IMO.

    Pretty early into act 3 and current comp is:
    Tav halfling Swords bard 6/assassin 3/ gloomstalker 3. Using Titanstrike bow and strength elixirs. Amazing party face, rerolls 1s, and does a ridiculous amount of damage. Can use bonus action on illithid powers or casting spells with band of the mystic scoundrel and risky ring for free sneak attacks. Using 18 dex gloves from the crèche, stacks charisma, dump strength and dex to 8 since cheesing both of them. Diadem of arcane synergy gives a bunch of extra damage.
    Karlach throwing barbarian 9 Barb/3 thief split. Uses disguise self hat to activate Dwarven thrower, nyrulna when it’s safe to aoe.
    Shadowheart 2 tempest cleric/ rest storm sorc
    Crazy aoe damage, using markoheshkir and some other staff. Twin casts chain lightning on wet enemies for absurd damage.
    Gale 1 white dragon (agathys) sorc/1 tempest cleric/10 Abjuration wizard. Build from d4, upcasts armor of agathys, gets a ton of arcane ward stacks, casts create water for himself and shadowheart, then runs through enemies triggering opportunity attacks to deal 60+ damage each time. Also can ward the party to stop a ton of damage. Uses legendary rapier to taunt enemies and ward allies twice per turn.
    I almost never need to use inspiration points in conversations and everything dies on turn 1 on honor mode. Usually everything is dead after tav goes first and he could probably solo without trouble. Gale has a bunch of utility and defensive power for the party. Karlach and shadowheart are damage monsters if tav doesn’t murder everything first.

    Great video!
    My advice for party comp in BG3 for a new player (which seems to be who you are targeting), is to play through Chapter 1 with a full recruitment list with their generic classes and learn how the story builds. So I have 3 different master saves halfway through Chapter 1, where in one I have everyone in the party still and influence has been fairly limited. I have one with LZ and Astarion prepped for picking up Minthara later. And I have one absent Astarion for doing the whole "path of valor." You can have 10 master saves with whatever race/gender you want you PMC, or 100 for whoever gives a shit. It's just like a good book. You read it once to entirety for plot. And then you pick it apart.

    My advice is don't sleep on druids. Halsin at level 10 is terrifying, and since he can split between a caster with a ton of CC versatility and giant f- off murder bear, he fits a number of roles freeing up your other two spots for a rotational approach, depending on what you're going for.

    @bigolbearthejammydodger6527 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Another consideration is making sure not all your party are looking to get the same gear.. only so many good weapons/armour or caster gear.
    if every one is dex based then all the good hvy armour goes to waste and you wont find enough good light armour/robes.
    m rule for party comp in D&D (in general) -
    1 'tinkerer' minimum - someone that can handle traps and locks in some manner... probably a rogue but this could well be a wizard by class or any smart person.
    1 'healer' minimum - and the healer could be anything from a cleric to a herbalist to a merchant that can get good prices on potions and wands.
    1 'warrior' minimum - and this warrior can be a fighter or paladin but it could also be some ones animal companion, or even a summon.
    1 'voice' minimum - master of bullshiting, negotiation and generally organizing all the things.
    1 'quartermaster' - a person who is willing and able to handle and organize the movement of loot *do not let the thief play this role, it always ends in tears.
    For BG3 specifically
    1 person with high strength to carry loot
    1 person that can cast long strider
    1 person that can cast aid
    1 person that can do traps and locks
    so the most SIMPLE and easy to with origin characters is in my opinion:
    have astarion as a rogue or rogue multi.
    have shadow heart as a cleric with 1 lvl of rogue. *it suits her shar stuff
    this way you can always have a rogue without forcing you to ALWAYS bring astarion.
    .

    A charisma based main character is best if you wanna dominate dialogue. This means you either gotta pick Bard, Paladin, Sorc or Warlock.
    Astarion fits the rogue, lockpicking slot very well. you can build him as a ranger/rogue/fighter and have amazing fun with him.
    Shadowheart fits the radiant orb build perfectly which is very powerful
    So the 4th slot can be of any flavour. Either Karlach as a throwing barbarian is very strong or Lae'zel as a fighter with polearm mastery and sentinel
    this way you can have a tank, healer, ranged dps and charisma main char. i personally preffer sorc or a warlock due to the magic spell dmg being OP

    I'll admit my brow furrowed a bit as you were combining three Wisdom-based characters (Cleric, Ranger, and Monk) on the same team lol. There isn't anything fundamentally wrong with that from a question about combat roles; it's more about the gear problems you alluded to.
    There's not enough gear to go around for a team heavy on one stat, just like you can't focus on one particular kind of weapon. Not to mention all of the Intelligence or Charisma checks you might want to pass but won't be able to, because nobody can accomplish it. You can always wing it as-is and proceed through the game, of course, but my efficiency-minded brain goes "AHH what are you doing?!" 😆

    I feel people put too much importance on conversational ability points. I beat the game with only str, dex, con, and no conversational abilities and i did all the conversations. Just choose the background and skills you want. It is a game of chance (turn karmic dice off), you can save in the middle of conversations before before you role dice, and you can reload till you pass. I know a lot of people prefer pure conversations, but if you do not, this is the easiest way to get the best possible outcome you want for your character.

    Okay. So, I am working on a Party Build. I love your Radiant Monk and the Eldritch Knight builds. The RM fills in the lockpicking side (gotta love a reformed Urchin TAV), and Lae'zel as the EK is the Tank. I quite like the idea of running Shart as a Healer/Supporter (am thinking Paladin of Ancients/Cleric of Life). So, the party is looking quite good. But, I am trying to think what the last character would be..... Some sort of Magic-User. Warlock Eblast spammer seems interesting. But I don't want to overlap too many items. ANy suggestions on how I might get this to be a competitive character that feels useful? (i'm aware I am missing out on a bow-user. But, I guess I cannot have everything!)

    Best Party Comp in my opinion is 2 front liners, somebody for defensive utility like light cleric or lore bard, and somebody who is there purely for the offensive capability like any of the full casters with good offensive spell options, take your pick there.
    On my current honor mode playthrough I have Astarion as Monk/Thief (Ascended Astarion gets +1d10 necrotic to every punch.), my Tav is a Padlock, Wyll is my Lore Bard but I am thinking about making him a Sorc instead and Sheart is my light cleric.

    • @DazedAndConfuzing
      @DazedAndConfuzing 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@roman11777 I ended up swapping between two comps that worked really well. I had Karlach thrower berserker9/3champion, shadowheart Light Cleric, lore bard 11/wizard 1 and Wyll Fiend lock4/vengeance paladin 8. I also swapped in a hunter 10/fighter 2 dual wielder. When I switched to swords bard, it was bard5/battlemaster7 only because I wanted 3rd lvl spells and switched wyll to a draconic sorlock 10/2 split. The swords/battlemaster killed everything super quick but it definitely lacked the diversity of options you get from the lore bard. With the lore bard I felt like no one could kill my party. I also mixed in a full land Druid but that felt redundant. I’ll likely include at least 6 lvls of lore bard in any and all of my future playthroughs as it brings so much to the table whether that’s with a paladin or cleric or even a rogue it could be interesting and fun to add in. The point being, so long as you have someone to take hit and to dish out damage you can really build anything around a lore bard.

All of my party members are multiclassed as well in interesting ways that seemed cool to me all though with the origin characters ive not gone past 2 classes each to not loose out on their origin benefits.

    Man I love these videos! Didn’t get BG3 until this Xmas but can’t stop playing and am about to embark on my first DND campaign with some friends. Question; is using terms like “action and spell economy” part of the DND vernacular as I (in no offence) felt it seemed kind of an odd choice and kind of unnecessary?

    • @nogoaway7540
      @nogoaway7540 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can concentrate one one spell at a time, and get 1 primary action and usually 1 bonus action per turn, barring features from specific classes (fighter gives you an extra action per short rest at level 2 with action surge, thief rogue gives you an extra bonus action at level 3). So you want something good to do with your action, bonus action, and concentration spells about as often as you can. Meaning when you're hunting for additional spells and abilities to add to your characters, you should have a roughly clear game plan for how to leverage those options each turn. Conversely, when looking over enemies, you aim to disrupt their ability to do this by either removing them from combat through damage or control abilities. Action economy, roughly, how much stuff each side is getting to do each turn, is the meat and potatoes of more tactical 5e DND combat. This mostly applies to higher difficulties of BG3, and less so in regular DND, unless your GM is particularly tactical with their combats.
