Dewalt D26204K Router - Product Tour

  • The Dewalt D26204K router is the top of a range of 3 small routers from Dewalt. The D26200 is the basic machine with a fixed base whilst the D26203 comes with a plunge base. The D26204 has both bases plus a few extras. In each case the router body is the same with a 900w motor and, in the UK, a 1/4" collet. It is possible to buy an 8 mm collet from many Dewalt dealers.
    In the US and perhaps other markets this may be sold as the Dewalt 611. The router body is suitable for fitting in the Inventables X-Carve small CNC machine.

    The bench vice that you see in this video is one of the (now rare) Zyliss vices made in Switzerland. I bought it in 1978 at a show in the UK. I have contacted Zyliss and they no longer make them and there is no record of a patent still in operation. It is a very useful bit of kit, especially when routing smaller pieces of wood. Peter

    It's a good idea to teach people how to handle this dangerous tool. I see you're a pro. Here I see people playing with their health and ignoring the safety criteria for this profession. Wearing rings during work does not use anti-reflection and similar. I am proud of you so far.

    I was particularly keen to watch this video because I'm recently retired and in the process of setting up a woodworking shop in my barn. I want to set up a router table using a fixed base and also have a plunge base for other general work.
    However, I couldn't see that this design of router would lend itself to straightforward height adjustment once mounted into a table.

      Hi John, You are right. This is a great router but not ideal for a router table. Take a look at the router table options from either Axminster or The Woodworkers Workshop and see where it takes you. Cheers. Peter

      Good morning Darrel,
      Your post is quite coincidental. My father has a ELU MoF 96, and i have used it quite some times. But i've just overloaded it yesterday causing it to short circuit. I'm looking at this kit as a replacement.
      I'd still like the elu to be repaired since it's almost antique and its nostalgic value.
      There are shops that still repair Elu machines. I found one in Haarlem, the Netherlands.

      I don't know if they are good though. But it could be a tip.

    glad to see you plan on replacing the rubbish spindle on the x-carve. could you report on heat issues when running a router for longer than say, an hour, some 3D jobs would take far longer. im curious if it adversely affects the router as opposed to a cooled spindle on industrial machines. thanks

      @NewBritWorkshop  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      the green man Whilst having a few practice goes with the 300w 24v Inventables spindle I was running it for up to 2 hours at a time. It did get warm but not so hot that I was worried. This might change in time as more dust gets inadvertently ingested by the motor. I am hoping that the considerable increase in power of the Dewalt will significantly reduce run times although I can imagine that a complicated job will still take a while. I will certainly report on this as I continue the Inventables work. Peter

    I doubt these machines are rated to work constantly in a cnc router. You can buy a 2kw spindle and VFD for around £200 these days which has much more precise bearings, and is designed to work non-stop - mine is 2.2kw, water-cooled and includes a decent VFD - the beauty is that you can then control the speed and even the direction from your Gcode. I do like these laminate trimmers but I can never decide what they are good for - who trims laminate anymore :-) They're slightly underpowered as routers and i find the bases too small - I always end up tilting them while doing edging work and buggering up the whole job. My OF 1010 is as small as I like to go.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mitch Peacock - WOmadeOD Hi Mitch, I have not mounted it yet but this router is the same as the US market Dewalt 611 and so I have the Inventables mount for the 611. The only delay I am having is finding a solution to the dust problem as the 611 (26204) pushes air downwards towards the cutter and this will cause all sorts of problems with CNC work. Peter

    Hi Peter. Thanks for the great review. I was about to buy one of these as a newbie to routing but then saw so many articles suggesting that the 1/2” bits are much safer and sturdier. I’d love to know your thoughts.
    So I was thinking..... am I ultimately better off buying a palm router 1/4” and a large 1/2” plunge router separately. Then I could use the latter in a table router set up. Would very much appreciate your advice on this. Best Pete

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Peter, If you can get at least 2 routers. If it is two, my recommended minimum, then a small one with a 1/4" or 8 mm collet is going to be the most used router. However, the second one - a medium size one with 1/2" collet, will be required for tougher jobs and a router table. Although you are not buying Festool kit look at my video "Which Festool Router" - th-cam.com/video/gHJktChv4Ck/w-d-xo.html Peter

      Thank you so much for your reply and the link you kindly sent. I’m certainly more informed now but it has me thinking that this d2620 kit would be a good option but would the plunge base become redundant once I bought a bigger 1/2” one. Or would it still be very handy? Or should I bite the bullet and go for the festool 1010 and cherish it forever. Or even a Trend T7 1/2”. It’s very tricky to know what to go for having never touched one before. Hmmmm. Thank you Peter

    • @NewBritWorkshop

      Hi Peter, The Dewalt is a great bit of kit but for a "Go To" router the OF1010 cannot be beaten. It has all the extras in the box, the dust collection is amazing (with the right extractor) and it handles really well. Once you have the OF1010 then wait a few weeks before deciding how you want to go for the next size up. Good luck. Peter

      Thank you very much for the answer.
      The last question :) how do you consider the level of vibration? I've seen the data of the Makita RT0700CX2J and they are much lighter. Colud you compare the vibrations of the Dewalt to any other router?
      Thank you very much.

      Hi Henning, You need to find the right guide bush adapter for this router. I suggest you look at the Leigh site as I used their 704R adapter for my Festool router. Try www.leighjigs.com/ugs.php Peter

      Hi Kevin, I do not have the kit any more but have found the following. You will need a guide bush adapter and a set of guide bushes. Here is the adapter:
      www.axminstertools.com/leigh-guide-bush-adaptor-for-trend-t5-t9-t11-dewalt-d26204k-leigh-710-210500
      and here is the guide busg set that I use:

      @@NewBritWorkshop thanks peter, im looking at the peanut joining system from intelligent fixings, and think a small router would be easier to handle than a large one but it requires a 30mm guide bush. you might take a look at the system in one of your videos, its clever and good value compared to a domino for a casual woodworker who just wants to make the odd cabinet and cant justify festool price tags. cheers

      Hi Willie, It could be table mounted but to make the effort worth while try a router that can take a 1/2" collet. Peter

    Other than the slightly more powerful motor it seems much more clunky to set up than the MAKITA RT0700CX4.

    • @schm4704
      @schm4704 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the opportunity to try both. The DeWalt is a little more clunky, but feels much more solid, and has way better collets. Setup is about the same for both. The Makita can be a pain when you don't get the bit out because of the single-slot collet. If you just need to trim edges, I would probably go for the Makita. As a first all-purpose router, I'd pick the DeWalt.

    Peter please take this as constructive criticism. I have enjoyed your reviews in the past but feel they are becoming more like adverts for the companies products rather than actual reviews. You state at the beginning of your videos that you are not on anyone's payroll yet say that the router was provided by Dewalt, what you don't mention is whether they provided it to you gratis to keep (as it is for use in the x-carve I think this is probably the case). If this is the case then you are taking payment in kind even if not on the payroll. I have no problem with you receiving free products, more power to you, but please be more transparent (and remove the tag line when you do I.e. review sponsored by Dewalt). In any review I want to know the good and the bad about equipment, assuming there is bad obviously.

      Jim Porter Hi Jim, I have been absolutely honest in stating up front that the machine has been provided by Dewalt and that it is intended to go in the X-Carve. Despite all of that I am still entitled to my opinion and I have stated it honestly. The machine is, without doubt, an excellent small router and pitched at a competitive price. People know that I received it free of charge because I said so and now all they have to do is to decide if what I have shown them is helpful or not. My aim is to help people. If I spent my time pushing trollies at my local supermarket I would be able to buy far more tools and gadgets than I would know what to do with and I would not need to work 6 days a week or into the early hours to get the video editing done. Peter
