I loved the Dyson sphere analogy to explain how secure AES 256 is, but you’re aware that we may not need to flip bits to break encryption, right? Like with Quantum Computing. IBM says existing encryption technology will be obsolete in about 10 years.

Great video Wendell! I've been slowly building up my home server over the past few years, and I think I'm close to taking the plunge for hosting email. A follow up video on that would be great!
Funniest thing in the world, the ad that played after this video was for the Honey browser extension, which we all know provides you with price comparisons from all over the internet for things you are buying, expecting nothing in return....except for all of your personal data that it immediately monetizes to third party marketers. Sigh... Great content as always man!
Thanks for this video Wendell! I know you have a lot going on and I hate to be THAT guy asking for a video... BUT I would love to hear a chat between Louis Rossmann and yourself! He is flying all over the country and filming these Right To Repair hearings, and now lobbyists are actually trying to take down his videos of public hearings! I realize he has way more subs but forget all that, you have a unique gift in the ability to distill high level concepts and a quirky sense of humor. I feel like you could give us some really basic ideas on how to stop this BS at the local level and honestly maybe a friendly chat would do him some good. I'm worried the guy is stretching himself too thin and would love to hear yall just laugh at these clowns...maybe pull back the curtain even more and highlight just how deep this rabbit hole goes? Just 2 cents from this jaded cripple with a dead 2080 I have to send in for repair...gd troubleshooting this has been a nightmare, least I know wtf it is now tho.
Another plugin that I can recommend for firefox is Trace. It randomizes the data that is used to make a fingerprint of your browser, so that every time you refresh a page a different fingerprint is computed, making it impossible to track you by just using a browser fingerprint. However, some of the randomization is disabled by default for some reason and you need to enable it after installation. You can check your browser fingerprint here - amiunique.org/fp Another thing I can recommend is "1st party isolation" of cookies in firefox. It forbids other websites to access cookies that they did not create. It can be enabled as a setting (no need for plugins).
I'm not convinced about Schniers explanation of how uncrackable AES256 is, seems to me they could have built a mathmatical back door into the protocol to speed up the decryption. Most of the encryption standards were developed by the NSA who I have a hard time trusting for some reason...
I lately am uploading on the cloud password encrypted archives for important stuff, so that I can reach them if I really need to, and if there are security breachs, I'll be covered
I love my DS718+, with 2x shucked 10TB easystores. Upgraded RAM to 6GB, runs all my backups of PCs and Google Drive, runs docker containers for whatever I want to, all with free ddns. I've been looking at the QNAP TS-332X lately, anyone have some experience with both software suites? Any gotchas?
Guys for getting back to Synology, they have a built in VPN so you can get back to it (rather than going through linode or a cloud instance), and the synology built in media servers easier to use than plex, especially for music and photos. :)
I am moving from Office 365-Google to my Synology NAS, I still will have access to my files over the net, however I have the control...or at least I think I do :)

Host your own password database with KeePass, Bitwarden, or SysPass, and follow the 3-2-1 rule for that password database (but making sure you strongly encrypt that database before sending it to the cloud, and not losing the password).
This is brilliant sponsored content. Thanks Wendell and Synology, even though I prefer to run my own freenas ;-) I'll keep synology in mind when someone asks for a simpler solution...

Emby isnt fully open source anymore, Jellyfin is the open source fork
JellyFin is quickly gaining ground on development too
Also there are not a ton of solutions for that . For media servers that are actually usable there's very limited amount of solutions.

My concern is where companies utilise Microsoft '365' cloud based storage. Companies need to keep their data 'in house'...
Check out the Firefox containers extension - it lets you create multiple sandboxes all within the same Firefox instance.
It's hard staying on top of it, thanks.

How do you get Star Trek to fit into 1TB storage 17 times?
What I really want is an mpd-for-video, like stream out and just pause the media when there's no syncs. Would be very, very handy!
