  • Yamaha K-1020, elegant and simple looking, but packing real performance inside. After a full overhaul it still performs to spec, to this day (besides W/F that measured 0.065% and is extremely hard to get to spec on theese Sankyo mechs) and surprisingly performs even better than advertised in some areas, like metal tape FR wich goes up to 25kHz (-3db point at -20dB rec).
This model along with other Yamaha decks have recently climbed up in price, most probably because people have realised their true potential.
    Overall in a summary:
If properly serviced, this deck will satisfy it's owner for many years to come and will still perform to spec or better after all theese years, without needing a huge investment.
Portions of this video containing music are taken directly from the device's output and is processed through a MOTU M4 audio interface, only limitation remaining beeing youtube's compression.

I owned a K-1020 in the 80's. Most expensive, but the best deck I ever owned.
With metal tape and dbx, impossible to make the difference with the source.
    You're lucky 🙂

One of the best 3 head decks, i own that model and it is my go to deck when I record music with and without dbx. I only use type 2 tape when I record any music without dolby of course.
