Even if it is just a game animation. there is one where they actually shows why Char did what he did in CCA due to events in Z and the death of Haman in ZZ. Also they talk about Char in the end of ZZ so that was pretty much hinting what happens later.
Point being at the time of conception, Char's Counterattack was not connected to ZZ at all, which is why you didn't have to watch ZZ to get the movie plot. It is actually easier to get what really happened if you read Portrait of a Young Comet, which explains why Char joined the AEUG in the first place, which had nothing to do with betraying his views on Earthlings, but moreso his shear anger and vengeful mind against Haman for killing his lover.
Depends on whether retelling movies, or movies that weren't "in cinemas"...because otherwise, it'd be CCA, F91 and then, 19 years later, Awakening of the Trailblazer. :|

CCA is not a sequel to ZZ, it is a sequel to Zeta. The story of CCA does not take into account any of what occurred during ZZ. Even then though, it isn't really much of a sequel. If they had made CCA into a short OVA series instead of just a movie feature, then it'd probably be more considerable as a direct sequel.

劇場版では、新機体と混じって登場してたから型落ち感を感じてた。
実際は型落ちどころか、あの時代でも十分すぎるレベルなんだけど
実際他のガンダムも大幅に改良や強化こそされてるけど、
基礎設計は既存の機体からの流用だしね。
